| | Megatrend Let The Trend Be Your Friend CD Megatrend Discography of CDs
With elements of broken beat, techno, dubcore, glitch, ambient and most points in between, Megatrend's album embraces the harsh beauty and disjointed noise of the urban decay to mould together a work of a real substance. This hour-long set of metal machine music distills elements taken from the broadest spectrum of styles - dub, ambient, electro, hip-hop, glitch, trance - into thirteen aggressive urban soundscapes. Moods are predictably extreme, ranging from the chill of 'Selfega Arialis' to the psychotic seizures of 'Liscargo Forleam,' and songs feature generous helpings of mechano rhythms, spooky themes, and crushing breaks. What most distinguishes Megatrend's sound is his concentration on dub, not the style itself but its production techniques, many of which are applied liberally throughout. Along with Styx and REO Speedwagon, Journey ruled the charts and radio airwaves in the early '80s. And like the aforementioned bands, Journey began in the '70s, so obviously the compilers of its 1988 GREATEST HITS release had a lot of material to choose from.
Journey's sound was a merger of hard rock, compliments of guitarist Neal Schon, and the melodic pop/ballads of singer Steve Perry. This resulted in such classic rock radio staples as "Any Way You Want It," "Separate Ways," "Open Arms," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Wheel in the Sky," and "Who's Crying Now," all included here.
Greatest Hits is an excellent, thorough 14-track collection containing all ...

| | Bosavi: Rainforest Music From Papua New Guinea CDs (2001)
Let The Trend Be Your Friend
$20.49 This three-disc field recording chronicles the music of the Bosavi ethnic group of upland Papua New Guinea. The Bosavi live in a group of villages in the rainforest around the base of an extinct volcano in the heart of New Guinea. The Bosavi were largely isolated from outside society until about 1970, when Western missionaries arrived with oil drillers; the Papuan educational establishment was just a few years behind. The present anthology was collected over the course of 25 years and chronicles Bosavi music both pre- and post-outside influence. Disc one exhibits Bosavi string bands. Influenced by hymns and by cassettes of Papuan music brought in by oil riggers, Bosavi string bands usually feature a female lead vocalist, one or more male backup vocalists, lead and rhythm guitars, sometimes a ukulele or a guitar played just on its bass strings, and some improvised drums. The voices are plangent, but the guitar work is quite pretty, sounding like a simplified version of Malagasy guitar wizard D'Gary. The second disc is entitled "Sounds and Songs of Everyday Life," and is just that: a collection of work songs and people singing along with waterfalls and the like; ...

Let The Trend Be Your Friend
$12.25 A personal, unique project compared to AMPLIFIED (Q-Tip's first under his own name), KAMAAL THE ABSTRACT fittingly sounds more like a solo album; whereas AMPLIFIED merely built on the digital soul of the last Tribe Called Quest album (THE LOVE MOVEMENT), this one is wide-ranging and diverse, a relaxed, loose-limbed date. Q-Tip lays way back on these cuts, rapping in a quick, low monotone for the opener, "Feelin'," even while the song breaks into some restrained guitar grind on the choruses. Guitars, in fact, crop up all over this record. Setting aside comparisons to the contemporary record by N.E.R.D. (the rock side project of hip-hop super-producers Neptunes), Q-Tip crafted a record that pays homage to the last gasp of organically produced mainstream pop in ...
