DUNE seemed to generally baffle audiences and critics when it was released. And rightfully so, as the finished version of the film condenses much of the detail in the novel so necessary to understanding the action in the movie. The result is one of the most brilliant failures in motion picture history. Lynch crams in so many visual ideas and gets the feel of the book so well that viewers don't want to admit to themselves that after the halfway point, the film seems to zip through the action so quickly that it's impossible to get all of what is going on. Still, it looks so amazing that it has certainly earned its somewhat fanatical cult following.

David Lynch's baroque rendering of Frank Herbert's detailed, complex, and deliberately paced epic science-fiction novel is a muddled but visually stunning affair. It's 10991, and the desert planet Dune has been taken over by the Harkonnens, oppressive conquerors who desire the precious spice that lies beneath Dune's arid sands. The story concerns the attempts of a young warrior messiah, Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan), to lead the native inhabitants in an uprising against the evil empire--and battle the giant man-eating worms that guard the coveted spice. Lynch shot much more footage than ended up in the finished film, but executive producer Dino De Laurentiis didn't want a three-hour-plus sci-fi epic on his hands, so he coerced Lynch into trimming it. The result is one of cinema's most infamous cases of personal vision colliding with studio politics. Nonetheless, Lynch still manages to cram in so many visual ideas and captures the tone of the book so well that these production issues can be easily set aside once the story starts rolling. Refusing to further edit the film for television, Lynch took his name off the director and screenwriter credits. As troubling as DUNE might have been for Lynch, the experience greatly inspired 1986's brilliant BLUE VELVET, for which audiences should be thankful.

Theatrical release: December 14, 1984. Filmed on location in California and Mexico. The credited name attributed to director David Lynch on the televison versions is "Judas Booth." Lynch turned down an offer from George Lucas to direct RETURN OF THE JEDI in order to collaborate with Dino De Laurentiis on DUNE. Directors Alejandro Jodorowsky and Ridley Scott also tried to adapt Herbert's novel to the screen.

5 stars A must see for Sci-Fi Readers
This is a five star Sci-Fi classic! This is a visual rush, not much dialog and will be confusing for viewers who have not read the book first; so I believe reading is a prerequisite and mandatory. I saw the original movie at the Theatre when it first appeared. I was fortunate to have friends along and had read the the novels of Frank Herbert years prior to seeing the movie. I got immediate feedback from my friends: those that saw the movie prior to reading the book were confused and did not enjoy it; while those of us that read the books both understood all of it and were over joyed! I urge you to read the book first. You will be glad you did!

5 stars Love it
This movie was one of the best ones i've ever seen, Many people think that it was too complicated, but if you just accept it as it comes then it all will become clear after only one or two viewings. The remake is more to the book so it offers some new materiel to help clarify some of the parts of the first movie.

4 stars Dune "appreciated"
I think Lynch did a great job even though it wasn't completely structured like the novel. Most movies tend to do that to a great book. Lynch has a unique visual style that I felt brought a sureal quality to the picture as well as the characters. When veiwing for the first time it was difficult to follow but upon a second and third viewing makes this epic a cult classic.

Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam epic, loosely based on the novel HEART OF DARKNESS by Joseph Conrad, tells the story of Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), a special agent sent into Cambodia to assassinate an errant American colonel (Marlon Brando). Willard is assigned to a navy patrol boat operated by Chief (Albert Hall) and three hapless soldiers (Frederic Forrest, Sam Bottoms, and Larry Fishburne). A decade after Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) destroyed the original Terminator, a second unstoppable killing machine (Arnold Schwarzenegger) arrives from the post-apocalyptic year 2029. But this time his mission is to stop an even deadlier Terminator, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), made entirely of shape-shifting liquid metal and determined to kill young John Connor (Edward Furlong), the future leader of the human resistance. Sarah, John, and the Terminator counter by going after the scientist responsible for developing Skynet, the computer system fated to destroy humanity, leading to an explosive and spectacular clash with the fate of humanity in the balance. Whereas James Cameron's original THE TERMINATOR was a low-budget marvel of efficiency and speed, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY is an action-packed blockbuster with some of the most amazing stunts ever filmed and ground-breaking, Academy Award-winning special effects. Star Schwarzenegger was paid in the form of a $15 million dollar jet to revisit his most famous role as the Terminator, this time made kinder and gentler against the silent, relentless T-1000. One of the most popular films of the 1990s, James Cameron's action masterpiece is both a thoughtful look at violence ...

This searing, controversial, and thought-provoking drama examines the motives and emotions behind terrorism. Co-writer Ayad Akhtar stars as Hassan, a Pakistani man who's falsely accused of terrorist associations, then imprisoned and tortured before finally leaving jail as a genuinely militant extremist. He goes to stay with his old friend Sayeed in New York (Firdous Bamji in a scene-stealing performance), where he explores the city, flirts with Sayeed's sister (Nandana Sen), and works with a group planning to bomb Grand Central. The impressive cast of unknowns and solid direction from Joseph Castelo make this tense, thoughtful drama an intriguing look at a subculture that, for obvious reasons, ...
We Were Soldiers
We Were Soldiers   (2002)

Dune DVD
HD-DVD (Playable only on HDDVD Players) $28.75
In 1965, 400 American troops faced an ambush by 2,000 enemy troops in the Ia Drang Valley (also known as the Valley of Death), in one of the most gruesome fights of the Vietnam War. WE WERE SOLDIERS is a detailed recreation of this true story: of the strategies, obstacles, and human cost faced by the troops that participated. The story focuses on the lieutenant colonel that led the attack, Hal Moore (Mel Gibson), and a civilian reporter who accompanied them, Joseph Galloway (Barry Pepper), as well as a number of other soldiers who were involved. This is an unusual Vietnam film in that it also shows the North Vietnamese perspective on the battle; their leader Lieutenant General Nguyen Huu An (Don Duong) is depicted as a brave soldier and smart commander. And in addition to the many gory battlefield sequences--which seem to have been influenced by SAVING PRIVATE RYAN--we also see how the carnage of war affects those left behind, the soldiers' wives and children. Ultimately ...

Andy Garcia stars in, directs, and produces this highly personal movie, a lengthy tale about his native Cuba. THE LOST CITY, a labor of love that Garcia has attempted to film for almost 20 years, was penned by his writer friend, the Cuban exile Guillermo Cabrera Infante, who didn't live to see the film completed. The film is set in Havana, where Garcia plays nightclub owner Fico Fellove, whose life revolves around the thriving scene that unfolds there on a nightly basis. But trouble looms when one of his brothers, Luis (Nestor Carbonell), is killed after a violent raid on the presidential palace. Matters get worse as Fellove's other brother, Ricardo (Enrique Murciano), harboring revolutionary ideas in retaliation for Luis's death, heads out to join the forces gathered by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. Meanwhile, Meyer ...

Two comedic heavy hitters, Will Ferrell (ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY) and Jon Heder (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE), join forces to push the boundaries of slapstick with their ice-skating farce, BLADES OF GLORY. Rival skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder) begrudgingly set out to attempt a historical comeback in the pair-skating program after being banned in the men's figure skating category after an unsportsmanlike scuffle. MacElroy's former coach (Craig T. Nelson) provides them with the tough-love coaching they so desperately need. Despite their absurdity, the duo aren't previous award winners for nothing, and their combined talent threatens the position of fellow American skating champions--brother and sister pair-skating team Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg, who are played by real-life husband and wife Will Arnett (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) and Amy Poehler (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE). But while Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg may turn on the charm for their adoring public, they reveal their true colors as they connive to sabotage Michaels and MacElroy in their ...
