CROSSROADS was nominated for the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Norteno Album.
With a dozen years logged, every one of them spent pushing the boundaries and expanding the realm of the acceptable in regional Mexican music, Intocable offer up perhaps their most adventurous effort yet. Crossroads is a genuine convergence of disparate musical influences, both Latin and not. In addition to ranchera, norteño, cumbia, and other standard Intocable fare, there are strong veins of country running throughout the record. Produced by Dixie Chicks veteran Lloyd Maines (father of frontwoman Natalie Maines), Crossroads is adorned in country grace on "Vuelve Mi Amor" and flaunts a bit of honky tonk on the single "Por Ella." Producer Junior Cabral adds unique flavor with mandolin and banjo, more influences that are seldom heard on Mexican radio. In an era when norteño continues to stagnate with record sales tapering off, yesterday's heroes playing smaller venues, and huge numbers of knockoff groups glutting the market with disappointingly uncreative material, Intocable continue to raise the bar. Receiving accolades from critics and fellow musicians alike, Crossroads is the finest norteño release of the year. The Billboard charts agree, placing the record at number one in both the Regional Mexican Music and Top Latin Albums categories. Accompanied by a DVD featuring a short but well-made documentary about the making of the album and artist interviews, Crossroads is a non-negotiable item for even casual Mexican music fans. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

| | Intocable Diez CDs (2005) Diez; Digipak
Crossroads music CDs
$12.59 DIEZ marks the 10th anniversary of the band in an intriguing manner, presenting an album of all-new material alongside another disc of mostly older songs covered by others in a pop/rock vein. The disc by Intocable features the elevated fare fans have become accustomed to, including the sublimely beautiful sweet "Soledad (Siento Morir)" and catchy single "Aire." The bonus disc includes a breathy version of "Fuerte No Soy" by Pepe Aguilar, as well as harder-edged renditions, including Volovan's version of "Ya Ves." Overall, DIEZ is a fascinating set from one of the most unpredictable bands in the Tejano vein.
The Tejano group Intocable has lived up its name (which translates into English as "untouchable") through its ability to skillfully and seamlessly blend various musical styles into one hearty and unique ...
| | Aventura God's Project CD (2005)
Crossroads songs
$13.85 Since its formation in the Bronx, New York in 1994, Dominican boy band Aventura has been steadily expanding its sound toward a style that incorporates hip-hop, R&B, rock, merengue, and reggaeton, while still retaining strong traces of traditional bachata. GOD'S PROJECT is the culmination of Aventura's stylistic expansion, and is the group's most mature, diverse, and accomplished album.
The sounds of bachata--the quartet's foundation--are still prominent, especially on "Ciego de Amor," which features a cameo by Antony Santos, one of the Dominican Republic's leading bachata artists (not to be confused with Aventura's own Anthony "Romeo" ...

| | Costumbre Entregame CD (2006)
Crossroads CD music
$11.09 After recording for Hollywood and WEA International, la Costumbre moved to Fonovisa with 2006's Entregame. Sometimes, switching labels can signal a change of direction for a group; the A&R folks at the new label might have something different in mind than the A&R folks at the old label. But Entregame is not a radical departure for Costumbre, who continue to provide romantic, good-natured Mexican pop that is norteño-minded but is not norteño in the purist sense. Entregame is not hardcore norteño in the way that los Huracanes del Norte, los Tigres del Norte, los Tucanes de Tijuana and los Rieleros del Norte are hardcore norteño; rather, Costumbre mixes norteño elements (including a prominent norteño-style accordion) with Latin pop in a crossover fashion that is comparable to the way a Dominican crossover artist might use bachata elements for pop purposes or a Spanish crossover artist might put a very pop-minded spin on flamenco. Some will describe Entregame as Tejano; others may call it grupero, but whatever the terminology one applies, this is a well executed effort that is enjoyable if one accepts it for what it is. Anyone who obtains Entregame in the hope of hearing covers of "Contrabando y Traición" or "La Banda del Carro Rojo" (two of los Tigres del ...

| | Very Best Of Julie London CDs (2006)
Crossroads album
$19.35 This two-disc set, generous at 50 tracks, is probably the most comprehensive Julie London anthology available. While certainly no match for her more technically accomplished contemporaries, London was a fine, appealing singer who used her cool, understated alto to excellent advantage.
London is best known for her signature song "Cry Me a River," and that's here, of course, but her sultry take on standards like "When I Fall in Love," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," and "Body and Soul" are nothing to scoff at. While some of her later recordings can suffer from excessive orchestration, London's vocal stylings are always on point, ...
