Hot on the heels of contemporaneous breakthroughs for all its members' other bands, Swan Lake capitalized on its indie supergroup status and branched out with BEAST MOANS. Comprised of Dan Bejar from Destroyer, Spencer Krug from Wolf Parade, and Carey Mercer from Frog Eyes, the band meshes their individual visions effortlessly on this self-produced moonlighting project that swings from beautifully melodic narratives to noisy experimentalism. Arpeggiating pianos, layered organs, and loose sounds dot the landscape of BEAST MOANS's thirteen tracks.

Photographer: Rafael Goldchain.Spin (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]hey find beauty in a gurgling version of psychedelic folk, reaching through the mist and retrieving, as by complete accident, gorgeously delicate bits of melody..." Entertainment Weekly (p.85) - "Krug masterfully leads the deep-fuzz dirge 'All Fires' and Bejar turns out a typically erudite anthem in 'The Freedom.'" -- Grade: B Uncut (p.103) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's punctuated by bursts of poetic insight and near-orgasmic glee." Alternative Press (p.190) - "[A]ptly titled -- with the saucy wit of Colin Meloy and more outboard effects than an Aphex Twin record, the trio careen through 13 rhapsodical tracks of delay-drenched, ramshackle David Byrne-meets-Black Francis love-rock." CMJ (p.3) - "[A]s guttural an unrestrained as its title suggests....[The album] manages the bewitching contradiction of being both earthy and ethereal." Swan Lake Beast Moans Songs Beast Moans Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) lush, experimental soundscapes I am a huge fan of all things Krug, and recently got into Destroyer. Although I haven't really gotten into Frog Eyes, I appreciate their avant garde edge. That said, when I first listened to this album, I was somewhat disappointed. It sounded muddled and slopped together. Several of the songs sounded like incomplete ideas. However, after repeated listening, I think that this is a really good album. It is best to listen to it as an album, rather than picking selected tracks. The whole thing gives me a feeling of floating. Upon my first few listens, I was overwhelmed by a wall of sound and reverb, upon repeated listening, however, different noises and instrumentation come out of the mix, making this an infinitely replayable album. Noisy cacaphony suddenly turns into melodic and beautiful moments, only to be swept back under seconds later. These moments (more and more are revealed upon repeated listens) are what make the album challenging and endlessly rewarding. Turn it on and get swept up in the blissful, melancholy haze that Krug, Bejar, and Mercer have created.

Beast Moans album
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ("Plans") ...

| | North Mississippi Allstars Polaris CD (2003)
Beast Moans album
$9.09 North Mississippi Allstars return with Polaris, their most ambitious album yet. They added Duwayne Burnside on guitar and vocals, and brought an even more eclectic group of songs to the table. Starting with the soulful rocker "Eyes," they slide right into a fabulous version of Junior Kimbrough's "Meet Me in the City." "Conan" starts with nice fingerpicked acoustic guitars before moving into and out of a country boogie before the guitar solo. Luther Dickinson's meaty slide is featured on all over the place, often recalling Duane Allman. Pegged as roots rockers and loosely identified with the jam-band scene, North Mississippi Allstars might surprise some people with tunes like "Otay" and "Time for the Sun to Rise," which are extremely well-produced pure pop tunes. The Dickinson brothers have done a great job with production all the way around: crisp and clean without sounding glossy, and a rich, warm tone throughout. The band seems equally at ease doing greasy country blues or bright shiny pop, making it all seem effortless (or like on "Be So Glad" where 95-year-old Othar Turner's fife mixes with drum machines and Cody Burnside's rapping, bridging three generations and at least two styles of music). Things end with a hidden track called "Goin Home," an up-tempo instrumental that recalls the best elements of the Allman Brothers Band. With Polaris, North Mississippi Allstars ...

The album is bookended by traditionally Indian-sounding tracks like "Punjabi Wedding Song" and "Marriage End," but in between, the music encompasses pop and urban sounds, while maintaining Indian elements as well. Bollywood veterans like composer Anu Malik, lyricists Zoran and Farhan Akhtar and Aishwarya Rai, who stars in the film ...
