| | Wes Montgomery Riverside Profiles CD Wes Montgomery Discography of CDs
Contains a bonus disc featuring tracks from other Riverside artists.
The recordings jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery made for Riverside in the early to mid 1960s are among his greatest, and this superb compilation represents that work ably. Though Montgomery experimented with orchestral settings and crossover pop in the late '60s and '70s, his groove-centered jazz outings, which feature his smooth blues-drenched tone and flexible bop vocabulary, are still his most satisfying. "Four on Six," "S.O.S." and "West Coast Blues" are only a few of the classics, but the set offers guaranteed pleasure from start to finish. Included is a bonus compilation disc of other Riverside artists from the period, including, among others, Charlie Byrd and Thelonious Monk.

Yet Miles's transitional albums are usually more polished, developed, and engaging than a lot of other artists' definitive albums, and such is the case with WALKIN'. Whether on originals ("Solar") or standards ("Love Me or Leave Me"), the sessions boast impeccable playing and superb interplay between the musicians, who number among the best of the era. Pianist Horace Silver, drummer Kenny Clarke, and trombonist J.J. Johnson are among the personnel, and one can hear the beginnings of the synergy Miles was searching for and would find with his quintet (especially in the dynamics between his trumpet and Lucky Thompson's sax, which ...

For starters, it is impossible to go wrong with the personnel on FULL HOUSE. With a rhythm section comprised of alumni from Miles Davis's first quintet (Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums) and the blazing tenor saxophone of Johnny Griffin complementing Wes Montgomery's bop leads on guitar, listeners will know they are in for a wild ride even before the album begins. Add to this an enthusiastic audience in a Berkeley jazz club in 1962 (where the performance was recorded), and one has a full house in more ways than one.
Post bop with a soulful, bluesy edge is the flavor of the day here, and the group works out accordingly on ...
| | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
Riverside Profiles
$13.69 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up ...
