| | Sparks Dick Around CD Sparks Discography of CDs
The swingin' single "Perfume" was the record company's choice, the epic "Dick Around" was Sparks', and the duo backs up their choice with a great set of extras on the U.S. single. Just about as big and as tricky as "Bohemian Rhapsody," the version of "Dick Around" is the same as found on Hello Young Lovers, but the album's "(Baby, Baby) Can I Invade Your Country" appears here with different lyrics, safer ones that remove references to the American national anthem. Three chestnuts played live by the enthusiastic 2006 version of the band follow, then there's a hilarious interview with Ron and Russell Mael conducted by former Sex Pistol Steve Jones for his L.A. radio show. As if hearing the three talk about stealing equipment and "the smell of man" isn't enough, the videos for "Dick Around" and "Perfume" are included in the CD's multimedia section with downloadable versions for iPods and PSPs. This is a fun hodgepodge hardcore fans shouldn't pass up. ~ David Jeffries

Dick Around album
$10.15 LAMENT was a 1980s-era addition to the canon of synth-pop albums from Ultravox, with the band scoring some hit singles with the upbeat "Dancing With Tears in my Eyes" and the mournful title track.
Ultravox were in a gray mood as they launched into their seventh studio album, LAMENT. With the band's previous existential angst now pooling around personal anguish, the album's title track was a study in languorous melancholy, where emotional pain lingers on and on. Even "One Small Day," the most celebratory song on the set, battles depression but dismally loses the war. No wonder Ultravox were so keen to escape into the past, with "Man of Two Worlds" taking them back to ...

$14.45 Lyrical wit is in abundance, magnified by Russell Mael's soaring falsetto gymnastics. Failure with the opposite sex is a recurring topic, from the adolescent fumblings of "Amateur Hour" to the resignation of "Falling in Love With Myself Again". It's easy to see why the teenage Morrissey was a dedicated fan. The track that really grabbed the public's attention was "This ...

| | Sparks Exotic Creatures Of The Deep CD (2008) (Import) England
Dick Around CD music
$14.79 Bookended as it is by Russell Mael's wordless chorale vocals that help kick off the opening "Intro" and which recur in the soothing but strange conclusion to the final song, "Likeable," not to mention similar moments throughout the album, it's almost too easy to summarize Exotic Creatures of the Deep as Sparks' most involved tribute to the Beach Boys, late-'60s version. But as with nearly everything the band's ever done, one can't sum up an album quite as simply as that, and Exotic Creatures, if not as completely explosive as Hello Young Lovers at its heights, finds the rude creative health of the Maels still firing on all cylinders. The amalgam of orchestrations, feedback, and a new millennium's electronics evident in recent releases often sounds all the more integrated here, readily ...

| | Dan Kwas Life Too Long Forgotten CD (2007)
Dick Around CD music
$10.15 After turning his back on a career in music 25 years ago, singer-songwriter Dan Kwas returns stronger and wiser on his debut album, "A Life Too Long Forgotten," an Americana gem featuring powerful and poignant songs filled with longing, hope and determination. Kwas fronted The Sidewalks, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based power pop band in the early 1980s, whose independently released single "Natalie" was a high-request tune on local college radio in the summer of 1981. Despite the band’s moderate success, Kwas grew despondent over its failure to attract a larger audience and threw in the towel at the age of 25, leaving Milwaukee and music behind. It would be nearly 10 years before Kwas picked up a guitar again, and another five before he attempted to write another song. He spent six years in New Jersey, four in Ohio and four more back in New Jersey before returning to Milwaukee in 1997. Along the way, he began a career in newspapers, fell in love, got married and became a father. Over time and much soul searching, Kwas realized that music was an integral part of his being that couldn’t be ignored. He dusted off his guitar and slowly started writing songs again. But it wasn’t until 2005, after the death of his father, that Kwas decided the songs he had been carrying around in his head deserved to be recorded for posterity’s sake. He bought a used digital recorder and a single microphone and began laying down the tracks that would eventually become "A Life Too Long Forgotten." The 13 tracks on "A Life Too Long Forgotten" reflect the thoughts and emotions of a man who refuses to let a lifetime of living get the best of him. Many of the songs deal with the quandaries of middle age, like the rollicking, self-reflective "Just Passing Through," in which Kwas questions the meaning of his existence through the metaphor of a road trip, and "Señorita Holy One," about a chance encounter that cures one man’s physical, emotional and spiritual emptiness. Romance, old and new, is a major component of the album as well, as in the roots-rocker "Winds of Change," in which Kwas fights the wanderlust pulling him away from a relationship, and the poignant "Me And You Again," in which he longs for the youthful romance he shared with his wife before the responsibilities of careers and parenthood got in the way. Kwas is not afraid to get political either, as is evidenced in the hard-driving ...
