Break Up album
$13.05 This expansive compilation focuses on a series of disco songs released on theT.K. Records label, most of which date from the mid- to late '70s. Despite the seemingly limiting "disco" tag, The Best of T.K. Disco presents a nicely diverse cross section of material from this genre: Indeed, the music covers everything from the lush, almost symphonic Euro-disco of Beautiful Bend's "That's the Feeling" to the earthy, bass-driven funk stylings of Uncle Louie's "Full Tilt Boogie." Along the way, it unearths plenty of lesser-known disco tunes that will delight hardcore fans of this style: Tempest Trio's "Love Machine" mixes symphonic lushness and percussive grooves to create a multi-layered dance track and "Plato's Retreat" by Joe Thomas is a cheeky tribute to the famous adult's club of the title that features a unique jazz-scat vocal break. A few of the inclusions don't live up to the level of these highlights (Quartz's "Beyond the Clouds" is a rather hookless synthesizer showcase that sounds very chintzy when stacked up against the otherwise richly produced tracks here), but The Best of T.K. Disco offers enough solid disco tracks to make it worth a spin to dance music ...

| | Anita Baker My Everything CD (2004)
Break Up music CDs
$11.69 Anita Baker first garnered a big audience in 1986 with her second record, RAPTURE. A critical favorite with a uniquely raspy, jazz-like expressionistic singing style, she scored a major pop and R&B hit with "Sweet Love." From that initial success, Baker carved her own niche somewhere between deep soul and smooth jazz. After a few more albums she decided to concentrate her passion on her family.
Following nearly a decade's hiatus, Baker returns to the recording studio with 2004's MY EVERYTHING, and, happily, very little has changed. She hasn't tinkered one bit with the sound that made her a beloved singer, emerging with a record both comforting and enrapturing. "You're My Everything" contains lyrics straight out of a WWII-era torch song, and a vibe that would have fit snugly on one of her first few outings. Although backed by a driving saxophone on the energetic gospel/blues number "I Can't Sleep," Baker fills much of MY EVERYTHING with sweet love songs. She brings it all together on the closing track, "Men in My Life," a tribute to her husband and two young boys.

| | Jon B Stronger Everyday CD (2004)
Break Up songs
$12.25 From the first track, "Everytime," where the always-unpredictable rapper Dirt McGirt lets loose, Jon B. reveals a sound that is both harder and smoother. On his first three efforts, B.'s best moments were when he molded '70s funk into his own modern take on urban R&B. STRONGER EVERYDAY finds a sweet soul groove and hangs in there for five alluringly sensual tracks before switching into a hip-hop-inspired style, and these tracks include guest shots from Scarface and Tupac (B. worked with the legendary rapper before his death). Whether he's gliding along a mellow tune or working an up-tempo beat, Jon B. presents some of his finest songs on STRONGER EVERYDAY.
Jon B. spent most of the early 1990s producing poppy R&B acts, including Toni Braxton and Color Me Badd, before he got a chance to show off his own rich, dulcet singing voice. His initial solo outings revealed him to be quite the hit-maker, striking a balance between dance and soul. Jon B.'s fourth record, STRONGER EVERYDAY, bears an apt title, as the album finds the multi-talented performer truly discovering his particular niche.
Personnel: Jon B. (vocals, various instruments); Babyface (vocals, various ...
| | Moments Love On A Two-Way Street CD (2005)
Break Up album
$7.89 This particular Love on a Two-Way Street is a ten-track compilation that features some of the Moments' most popular singles released from 1969 through 1976, including the title track, "If I Didn't Care," "Sexy Mama," "All I Have," and "I Do" -- all of which reached the Top Ten of the Black Singles chart. Several other sets -- such as Rhino's 18-track The Best of the Moments: Love on a Two-Way Street and Castle's two-disc Love on a Two-Way Street -- are more thorough and easier to recommend, but this is a cheap way to obtain some of the sweetest ballads of the era. [Note: The same disc was released with different artwork by Collectables in 2005.] ~ Andy Kellman

| | Lady Gaga Just Dance (2008) 4 versions; Remix
Break Up CD music
$3.59 No one can accuse Lady Gaga of not giving the people what they want. "Just Dance," the artist's first single, is an urgent dancefloor filler that draws on Madonna, glam, `80s electro-pop, and deep house, trendy elements that not only push ubiquitous pleasure buttons but carry all the right cultural cachet in the late 2000s. But the up-and-coming dance-pop diva has the skill and flair to pull it off, as anyone who hears (and buys) "Just Dance" will find. Sexy, catchy, and eminently danceable, this single release is hard to resist. More of the same can be heard on THE FAME, Lada Gaga's full-length ...
