This 1998 reissue includes 7 bonus tracks not included on the original release. An expanded version, with non LP-singles, of one of the best debut albums of the British Invasion, THE MAGNFICENT MOODIES collects essentially every note recorded by the original Moody Blues, at this point a tough little R&B band fronted by soulfully voiced Denny Laine. Like most English bands of the period, the Moodies covered songs by black American acts both famous and obscure--the album's big hit, " Go Now," was in fact a faithful version of a failed American single by the today little-known Bessie Banks. They also take on James Brown (definitive readings of "I'll Go Crazy" and "I Don't Mind") as well as bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson's "Bye Bye Bird," but they weren't averse to copping pop tunes, demonstrated here by their appropriation of "I've Got a Dream," by Brill Building legends Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. Just about everything here is worth hearing, with the forgivable exceptions of an overwrought take on Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" and a surprisingly stiff rendition of "Time Is on My Side" (yes, the same song the Stones covered). Pele Enemies CD (2002)

Although entirely instrumental, Pele has something very much in common with many of the bands who use vocals: They're an act best watched live. Surprisingly, this Milwaukee trio is killer on-stage, finding the groove early on, making sure the audience gets into it, and then improvising the hell out of the set and having a blast the entire time. Whether it's drummer Jon Mueller's crazy antics -- such as licking the kick drum or toying with balloons -- or bassist Matt Tennessen or guitarist Chris Rosenau running around on-stage, Pele is certainly not an act to be missed. And yet, it is a tough transition for all exciting live bands to carry that same energy into a recording studio and have it come through on the speakers. At the very least, on Enemies (their second album for Polyvinyl), Pele reaches the same mark of energy and excitement set on their Polyvinyl debut, The Nudes. At best, they're furthering that live energy into new dynamics (incorporating Jon Minor's computer work on the album, for example) and more creativity. Enemies starts with an upbeat tune, "Crisis Win," that comes bursting from the start with handclaps and a steady beat. The guitar, still reminiscent of The Nudes as far as sound and tone is concerned, delicately rises into the mix and away Pele goes. The last two-plus minutes of this tune are no doubt an example of Minor's contribution, as there is a myriad of voices filtered into the sound, barely being held ...

When they first started out as fresh-faced kids back in the mid-'80s, they captured the jangle of the Byrds, the melody of the Left Banke, the attitude of the Shangri-Las, and the rich harmonies of the Mamas & the Papas (without the Papas, of course) and wrapped them all up in a sweet and catchy package. Their first album was a bright, shiny pop album full of all kinds of promise, which they thereafter either fulfilled or wasted depending on where you stood. Having a hit with the Billy Steinberg-penned novelty song "Walk Like an Egyptian," doing Prince songs (even though "Manic Monday" is a song that deserves its pop classic standing), hiring faceless session musicians to make the second album sound more in tune with the times: these all deserve votes for wasted.
