| | J J Cale Road To Escondido CD J J Cale Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
J.J. Cale is perhaps best known for penning hits for Eric Clapton, including "Cocaine" and "Midnight Hour," yet he's also an accomplished and extremely talented songwriter and guitarist. While no one ever declared, "Cale is God," Clapton clearly has always thought highly of him, and in 2006, the Clapton/Cale mutual admiration society finally made its way into the studio.
The result is 14 songs' worth of the relaxed blues hybrid that Cale built his career around and that earned Clapton the nickname '"Slowhand." The duo produced all the tracks and wrote the majority of them, with some help from guests such as Taj Mahal, Derek Trucks, the late Billy Preston, and John Mayer, who wrote the song "Hard to Thrill" for the album. THE ROAD TO ESCONDIDO is a mellow musical good time between friends, and for fans of the two musicians, it's a front-row seat to a rare and scintillating collaboration.

Q (p.144) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[V]ery much Cale's record....[He] simply does what he always does, rocking out in his infinitely mellow, less-is-more kind of way." Dirty Linen (p.40) - "For those hunkering for Clapton's old-fashioned blues, he does a nice version of Sonny McGhee's 'Sporting Life Blues.'" No Depression (p.112) - "Clapton, perhaps seeking approval from his mentor, shapes some of his most concise and sharp solos in years." J J Cale Road To Escondido Songs | 1. | Danger |

| | Derek Trucks Songlines CD (2006)
Road To Escondido CD music
$11.39 This is, perhaps, the one. Derek Trucks has been on an aesthetic quest for something since he began his own recording career in 1997 -- apart from his membership in the Allman Brothers Band. Each record has gone further into establishing Trucks not only as a slide guitar wizard (that happened when he was still in his teens), but also as a serious songwriter, fine arranger, and bandleader. The Derek Trucks Band, as evidenced by the release of 2003's Soul Serenade, is a unit -- a band -- whose core has been together for eight years. They create an atmosphere, a sound, a musical sense of place and community. On Live at the Georgia Theater (available only on the Internet), the DTB performed with new vocalist Mike Mattison, who gave them something they needed: a strong, utilitarian presence ...

| | Neil Young Live At Massey Hall 1971 CD (2007) Includes bonus DVD
Road To Escondido album
$21.29 Bob Dylan once famously remarked about hearing Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" on the radio that he knew his days as the man of the hour were numbered. Fact is, Young is the only guy who can even reasonably compete with Dylan for the title of rock's greatest songwriter, and while "Dylan in the '60s" has long been a cliched assessment of an undeniable rock hot streak, so too has become "Neil Young in the '70s." While Dylan has long culled material from his archive, Young has been reluctant to do the same. He's now joining the fray full force with LIVE AT MASSEY HALL 1971--the second live release in an ongoing series from Young's legendarily deep vaults.
The performance comes between the release of AFTER THE GOLDRUSH and HARVEST and hot on the heels of DEJA VU, basically the last time Young's eminently enthralling man-child persona of "I Am A Child" and "Helpless" held sway over the obstinate, electric crank of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT ...
| | Robin Trower Seven Moons CD (2008) Digipak
Road To Escondido CD music
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's silvery guitar runs. Gary Husband fills the drum slot adequately if inconspicuously, but his contributions are mixed so far under Bruce's vocals and Trower's guitar that they are secondary. The previous two releases ...
| | Chris Whitley Live At Martyrs' CD (2000)
Road To Escondido music CDs
$11.39 Recorded live at Martyr's, Chicago, Illinois on August 12-14, 1999.
Chicago;1999;Feat.2 New Songs& Songs From All 4 Studio Rel.
Solo performer: Chris Whitley (vocals, guitar).
Just a man and his guitar: that's all Live at Martyrs' is. Yet it is perhaps the best way to hear Chris Whitley, separated from the studio trappings that had a tendency to obscure and hinder his otherwise gutsy folk-blues on previous recordings, and planted precisely in the element that helped earn him his name in singer/songwriter and critical circles. That is part of what makes the album such a welcome addition to the cult musician's mixed catalog. Recorded in Chicago over a few nights in 1999, Live captures all the things that make Whitley's music so enticing: heated passion, raw intensity, and an indescribable urge toward both the sacred and profane. It is, in fact, a logical extension from both his outstanding debut album and his previous effort, Dirt Floor, the two most lauded releases ...
