| | Sonny Rollins Tour De Force CD (1956)
100 Racks
$9.89 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1989, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This 1956 session was originally comprised of three Sonny Rollins originals and two vocal numbers ("Two Different worlds" and "My Ideal") with guest Earl Coleman joining the accompanying trio of pianist Kenny Drew, bass player George Morrow and drummer Max Roach. The CD reissue adds to the album a wonderful eight minute "Sonny Boy," which is a joy to behold and was clearly only left off the original release because of time constraints. Rollins dazzles throughout with his heartfelt playing which is full of breathtaking, wide-awake life. He loves to roll in the aisle laughing (and always with a rich, muscular sense of humor) and he loves to burn with the passion of a ballad. Additionally, hearing him play off of a human voice shows just how much of the language of emotion he's able to conjure through his tenor saxophone. This is a superlative album by one of the major instrumentalists of this century.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on December 7, 1956. Originally released on Prestige (7126) ("Sonny Boy" was recorded in the same session, but was released previously ...
| | Wizzard Presents CD (1999) Import
100 Racks
$21.05 These cuts on the Wizzard label are the single mixes of tracks that were usually extended in clubs. The mix of house, acid house and classic Chicago house is rather dizzying at times, but it is a chronological release of the singles form the label, which would be a solid standard for any serious collector. Musically, this collection, apart from its remixed identity, is a mixed bag. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Game Documentary CD (2005)
100 Racks
$10.49 After many twists and turns, the Game finally dropped the highly anticipated THE DOCUMENTARY as the first major hip-hop release of 2005, and it's quite an opening salvo. On the Kanye West-produced "Dreams," he displays a dizzying intellect, subtly working an apt quote from Nas into an imagined bi-coastal conference between Jam Master Jay and Eazy-E. (The track also invokes political figures ranging from Ronald Reagan to Huey Newton.) The Game's clearly been immersed in the rap world from an early age, and he tips his hat to both past masters and his contemporaries, many of whom appear on the record (Eminem, 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, and others). THE DOCUMENTARY heralds a stunning new voice in rap by living up to its overwhelming hype.
On his official debut, THE DOCUMENTARY, Los Angeles rapper the Game (born Jayceon Taylor) observes he "was an ol' G in the hood" before he was 22. The Game has truly packed a lifetime of fury, chaos, and crime into his first years of adulthood, living life with a reckless passion. After a gunshot wound sent him into a temporary coma, he decided to put his agile mind to better use in hip-hop, and his complex, ferocious raps swiftly became mixtape staples.
Personnel: The Game (rap vocals); Faith Evans, ...

| | Gangsters And DJ'S Box CDs (2006) Box Set
100 Racks
$11.15 Gangsters and DJ's Box is a four-disc box set from Thump that binds together a trio of compilations: Old Town Gangster Hits, Deadly DJ Cuts, and the second volume of the West Coast Gambinos series. Old Town Gangster Hits and West Coast Gambinos concentrate on hardcore Latin rap from the West Coast, while Deadly DJ Cuts takes a completely different theme, highlighting the wizardry of turntablists like DJ Shadow, Peanut Butter Wolf, Q-Burns Abstract Message, Mix Master Mike, and Cut Chemist. It would've made a lot more sense to include West Coast Gambinos, Vol. 1 instead of the DJ-centric set. The set would retain some thematic consistency. But, instead, ...
