Thriller! -- Cold Blood's fourth LP -- is a continuation on the brass-intensive funky R&B that drove their previous efforts. In contrast to those discs, however, there is very little in the way of original material here, the singular exception being Max Haskett's rollicking "Live Your Dream," which features the Pointer Sisters on backing vocals. This was not the first collaborative effort between the two either, as the vocal trio had also made a few notable contributions to the Sisyphus album. One of the primary distinctions between Cold Blood and their Bay Area contemporaries the Tower of Power is lead vocalist Lydia Pense. She has developed from simply belting out the blues -- à la Janis Joplin -- to becoming an increasingly sensitive lyrical interpreter without diminishing her prowess or guttural growl. One prime example is her ease and agility on the cover of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" -- which likewise includes some of the finest and most tasteful contributions from the horn section. The same can also be said of their cover of the Band's "Sleeping" -- retaining much of the same charm as the original. Cold Blood contrasts the mellow with a few loud funkified fusion numbers, such as the lead track, "Baby I Love You," and "Kissing My Love" -- which hearkens directly back to the double-jointed rhythms found in the band's eponymously titled debut album. Another highlight is Raul Matute's Hammond-organ on the classic blues "Feel So Bad" -- which is similar to Ray Charles' original reading. ~ Lindsay Planer

Purchase Thriller! CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Deep Purple Machine Head CD (1972)
Thriller! album
$7.75 This package contains the original MACHINE HEAD plus quadrophonic mixes of 2 songs on one disc, MACHINE HEAD remixed by Roger Glover in 1998, and a 28 page booklet.
A probable contender for one of hard rock's "all-time most influential albums," Deep Purple's MACHINE HEAD has all the markings of a heavy classic. It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The lone presence of "Smoke on the Water" immediately elevates the album to essential status. The song became a long-running radio staple, and boasts one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs in rock history.
Yet the rest of the album holds up impressively, from the adrenaline-soaked opener "Highway Star," in which organist Jon Lord and guitarist Richie Blackmore trade off dazzling solos, to the churning "Space Truckin'," another ...
| | Cold Blood/Sisyphus CD (2001)
Thriller! CD music
$12.95 A straight, no-frills-or-bonus-tracks reissue of Cold Blood's first two albums from 1969 and 1971 on one CD, these 13 tracks make a case for the band as one of the better "lost" groups of the late-'60s San Francisco scene. Gutsy-voiced singer Lydia Pense had her Janis Joplin schtick down-pat, and even though the group was fraught with the usual revolving door personnel that a nine-piece is bound to experience, these two albums find them young, hungry, and relatively unscathed by the business dealings that ultimately did them in. Their debut (tracks one through seven) is predominantly comprised of sassy blues and R&B covers injected with their personal groove, while tracks eight through 13 from Sisyphus ply their originals, except for a scorching cover of the Hayes/Porter classic "Your Good Thing" with the young Pointer Sisters on backing vocals. The 2001 remastering is adequate, but the sound, especially on the drums, is a little tinny and compressed. As a combination of Tower of Power's funky horn attack, Big Brother's shambling garage approach, and Chicago's jazz-rock, Cold Blood seemingly had all the correct ingredients, but something was missing. That something was great songs and classy arrangements; so while the group does their best to stamp this music with their unique identity, weak tracks like "I Can't Stay" (where in a fit of misdirected democracy Pense doesn't even sing lead) lie flat. Still, there is enough spontaneous talent ...
| | Wishbone Ash Argus CD (1972) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Expanded Edition
Thriller! music CDs
$6.49 On its third album, Wishbone Ash doesn't mess with its formula--as before, this long running British rock institution purveys a mix of blues, folk, and Yes- style riffs mated to endearingly cosmic lyrics. The songs here, however, are considerably more focused and well crafted than on the band's previous efforts, and the harmony singing is delightful.
As always, the band's basis is the tag team guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner. Fans of this duo's mix of Yardbirds- and Allman ...

| | Best Of Hothouse Flowers CD (2001)
Thriller! music CDs
$8.89 Three years after London released The Best of Hothouse Flowers in the U.K., Rhino in the U.S. issued Greatest Hits in 2004. It's essentially the same collection as The Best of, containing the same artwork and the same 14 tracks as that compilation, adding the singles "One Tongue" and "An Emotional Time" from 1993's Songs From the Rain to give that album a greater presence. It improves the collection, making it a more representative overview of the band's entire career and a worthwhile retrospective and introduction. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
London Records reportedly put this retrospective album together without involving anyone from Hothouse Flowers. That undoubtedly explains the rather bizarre track selection and the almost insulting emphasis on the band's first two albums. The 14-track compilation features more than half of People (1988) and more than a third of Home (1990). But there are only three tracks from the group's second pair of albums. It's not surprising that the producers were not as keen on the 1998 comeback attempt, ...
