Peace In The Abstract album
$51.95 THE COMPLETE VERVE STUDIO MASTER TAKES makes a definitive and compelling case for Holiday's Verve tenure. Packaged in a deep-dish metallic box (which resembles the world's most beautiful lunch pail), THE COMPLETE comprises six CDs, a 60-page booklet filled with rare photographs and superb liner notes, and dazzlingly crisp sound via digital remastering. The musicians on these sessions were some of the finest of the era, and Holiday herself--even with a gift impaired by time and abuse--sings with impeccable artistry, and beautifully enough to break the heart. The set is essential for completists, and is also a great one-stop for those looking to acquaint themselves with Lady Day's later work.
Billie Holiday fans will argue eternally over the relative merits of the different phases of her career. In these arguments Lady Day's work for Verve, which roughly covered the last decade of her life, often gets short shrift. While it cannot be denied that Holiday had lost much of the ...

Peace In The Abstract music CDs
$15.35 Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly guitarist Steve Cardenas and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, to shine. This is big-band music that can shift with ease from avant-garde passages to swinging melodies, and the talent on ...
| | Sonny Rollins Without A Song: The 9/11 Concert CD (2005)
Peace In The Abstract songs
$9.69 Recorded on September 15th, 2001, WITHOUT A SONG is a live recording by jazz icon Sonny Rollins, observing the World Trade Center disaster that occurred just four days prior to the concert. Rollins was one of the few musicians from jazz's golden age still performing with a sense of vitality, and that is especially clear on this recording, which is imbued with the gravity appropriate ...

| | Stanley Turrentine That's Where It's At CD (1962) Bonus Track; Remastered
Peace In The Abstract CD music
$8.55 A Blue Note release with Les McCann on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Otis Finch on drums. Small group format. Excellent (and exciting) soul-jazz session with Turrentine blowing hot. ~ Ron Wynn & Michael Erlewine
This 1962 session places tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine in the company of pianist Les McCann, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Otis Finch. Of the six cuts on the original release, McCann, who was already in serious soul-jazz territory, wrote four. His meaty three- and four-chord figures are prominently placed and, as always, his sense of time and swing are everywhere. "Smile, Stacey" kicks it off in full blowing fare with Turrentine walking the line between soul-jazz and hard bop like a tightrope. His earthy tone is particularly muscular and quick here. His own blues ballad, "Soft Pedal Blues," follows, with Turrentine doing his best Ben Webster with slow, smoky breathy tones and McCann trilling across the top on the turnarounds. The slippery soul-blues of "Pia" is a shimmering little groover by McCann with him singing along with the lines in his solo. On his "We'll See Yaw'll After While, Ya Heah," his gospel chops come pouring out into the lyric until Turrentine moves ...
| | Dave Brubeck Live At The Berlin Philharmonie CDs (1970)
Peace In The Abstract music CDs
$15.79 Dave Brubeck Trio & Gerry Mulligan: Dave Brubeck (piano); Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone); Jack Six (bass); Alan Dawson (drums).
Recorded live in Berlin, Germany in 1970. Includes liner notes by Dave Brubeck.
Out of the 13 selections included on this double CD, six were originally released just in Europe, two ("Out of Nowhere" and "Mexican Jumping Bean") were never out before and only five songs were on the American LP. Considering how inspired the Dave Brubeck Quartet sounds, it is surprising that the music has been so obscure for so long. Baritonist ...
| | Rewind! CD (2002)
Peace In The Abstract songs
$14.49 REWIND! includes cover versions, remixes, and re-edits of original old school classics, rare groove gems and other famous songs.
As you might expect, this collection of "new cover versions, remixes, and re-edits of original old-school classics, famous songs, and underground rare groove gems" is something of a mixed bag. The grooves are mostly jazzy and relaxed, as is Ubiquity's wont, but there are exceptions: Jack Costanzo's refreshingly frenetic ...
