As one of the finalists on the fifth season of the AMERICAN IDOL reality-TV show, North Carolina-based neo-grunge vocalist Chris Daughtry garnered even more attention by getting asked to be the frontman for the group Fuel, and then, surprisingly, declining the offer. This 2006 album, technically credited to the band Daughtry, reveals what the singer opted for instead, offering up impressively catchy, yet requisitely brooding, heavy rock, as best revealed on the emotive "It's Not Over" and the urgent "What I Want," which features former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. Everything that made Chris Daughtry insufferable as a contestant on American Idol -- his utter lack of humor, his oppressive earnestness, his desire to sing every song in the same gut-wrenching fashion, a style that only suited the post-grunge brooding that is his chosen specialty -- work for him on his post-Idol debut album, Daughtry. Technically, this is not a solo album, it's the debut of a band called Daughtry, which is actually spelled all in capital letters, which could be seen as a sign that Chris Daughtry might have a bit of a credibility complex. It certainly seems as if he thinks he'll only be taken seriously as part of a band that, like lots of bands from the grunge revolution, is spelled in a specific, exacting way, even if it means that by the rules of the internet he is, quite literally, shouting at us -- which is only appropriate for a singer who is fueled by Fuel and lives by Live. And, let's face facts, DAUGHTRY was formed by Daughtry not only after his run on American Idol, but after he recorded this debut album: the band is for show, to prove that he's the real deal, baby, not some pansy TV singer. It's a posture that's not only just a teeny bit defensive, but one that's utterly unnecessary because the album DAUGHTRY is actually very good, whether it's judged by the standards of American Idol or by the standards of Fuel or Nickelback. Compared to Fuel -- the band that invited Daughtry to be their frontman after he was voted off Idol -- Daughtry has a lighter touch not just in his delivery but also in his songs, which are far hookier than most post-grunge; and if he's compared to Nickelback, he's a far more appealing frontman than that lunkhead Chad Kroeger, with a greater vocal range and far more sensitivity in his singing. Daughtry's way with a hook and empathetic emoting are placed far up in the unapologetically professional mix on DAUGHTRY, which is designed to cross over not to the pop market -- everybody involved knew that DAUGHTRY had that anyway thanks to Daughtry's TV celebrity -- but to the rock market, so everybody involved made sure not to temper the guitars with layers of synths or even to indulge in too many power ballads. The resulting album may play strictly by the rules of mainstream post-grunge and it may never achieve the sweat and grit that real rock bands do even after they've been cleaned up in the studio, but it follows the modern rock blueprint exceedingly well, creating drama even in its pedestrian moments. It also helps that the songs are sturdier than most post-grunge, with big, anthemic hooks on the choruses and verses that are lively enough not to bore. In short, it sounds likEntertainment Weekly (p.80) - "The single 'It's Not Over' is ridiculously catchy..." -- Grade: B Kerrang (Magazine) (p.49) - "[T]he man certainly has an impressive set of pipes..." Daughtry Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Copied, Corporate Crap Daughtry can sing but he can't write anything original. I hate this copied, corporate neo-grunge, whiny crap that all sounds the same. I would rather he write something original that sucks but at least he wrote from his heart--than to just try to stay trendy. Submitted by The Man (Somewhere In Time) Was This Review Helpful? I didn't like him on Idol... but I think he's a great artist and I love the album. His debut is far better than #1, #2 and #3. Submitted by master.bacarra (MB, Philippines) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
OMG! I love it!!!!!!!!!!! Great cd including the songs: Feels Like Tonight, Home, It's Not Over, Over You, and SO MANY HITS! Submitted by Mfykaload_69 (Lititz, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
big surprise I rarely ever buy CDs. Always a waste of money as there is usually one popular hit on it and the rest are garbage. BUT this CD was a shocker. EVERY SONG was great and I hear most of them on the radio through out the day.
I bought it partly because I heard 3 songs on the radio and he seemed like a nice guy who got a bum deal but kept his manners and spirit up.
Good for him and will definitely look at any other music he puts out. Submitted by pyttap (Dallas, Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Daughtry songs
$6.39 (MP3 Available for Download) The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America for the U.S. Only two songs on this set list are shared with In Blue, but that doesn't mean that the group returns to their slightly more traditional Celtic roots on the remainder of the songs. Sure, there are hints of that, but there are also four pop covers, two of them ("Little Wing" and "Ruby Tuesday") featuring Ron Wood, with another song, the Lee Hazelwood/Nancy Sinatra duet "Summer Wine," featuring Bono. Some of this is not unfamiliar to the Corrs' repertoire, since they did cover "Little Wing" before, on Talk on Corners (plus an MTV Unplugged release), but the end result is the same -- it's a crossover collection, not an album that emphasizes their Celtic ...
| | Nickelback All The Right Reasons CD (2005)
Daughtry album
$14.79 (MP3 Available for Download) Nickelback: Ryan Peake, Chad Kroeger (vocals, guitar); Mike Kroeger (bass guitar); Daniel Adair (drums). With their fourth album, All the Right Reasons, Nickelback ditches any pretense of being a grunge band and finally acknowledges they're a straight-up heavy rock band. Not that they've left the angst of grunge behind: they're a modern rock band living in a post-grunge world, so there's lots of tortured emotions threaded throughout the 11 songs here. But where their previous albums roiled with anger -- their breakthrough "How You Remind Me" was not affectionate, it was snide and cynical -- there's a surprisingly large sentimental streak running throughout All the Right Reasons, and it's not just limited to heart-on-sleeve power ballads like "Far Away" and "Savin' Me," the latter being the latest entry in their soundalike sweepstakes. No, lead singer/songwriter Chad Kroeger is in a particularly pensive mood here, looking back fondly at his crazy times in high school on "Photograph" ("Look at this photograph/Every time I do it makes me laugh/How did our eyes get so red?/And what the hell is on Joey's head?"), lamenting the murder of Dimebag Darrell on "Side of a Bullet" (where a Dimebag solo is overdubbed), and, most touching of all, imagining "the day when nobody died" on "If Everyone Cared" (which would be brought about "If everyone cared and nobody cried/If everyone loved and nobody lied"). Appropriately enough for an album that finds Kroeger's emotional palette opening up, Nickelback tries a few new things here, adding more pianos, keyboards, and acoustic guitars to not just ballads, but a few of their big, anthemic ...

| | Evanescence Open Door CD (2006)
Daughtry MP3 Album
$8.99 (MP3 Available for Download) Evanescence: Amy Lee (vocals); Terry Balsamo, John LaCompt (guitar); Will Boyd (bass guitar); Rocky Gray (drums). Personnel: Amy Lee (vocals, piano, programming); John LeCompt (guitar, programming); Terry Balsamo (guitar); Rocky Gray (drums); Bon Harris (programming); Carrie Lee (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Dave Fortman . Recording information: Record Plant Studios, Los Angeles, CA. Photographer: Frank Ockenfels. On the band's highly anticipated 2006 album, THE OPEN DOOR, Evanescence presents the full-length studio debut of its new line-up, after the departure of founding guitarist Ben Moody and the addition of six-stringer Terry Balsamo. While this outing isn't a radical sonic departure for the goth-leaning heavy-rock band, the change clearly allowed vocalist Amy Lee to take the creative reins, and indulge even more in her flair for the ornate and dramatic, as evidenced by DOOR's fairy tale-like artwork and urgent first single, "Call Me When You're Sober," which finds the singer cutting loose with her powerfully expressive voice. Fans worried about major stylistic shifts from Evanescence will be relieved by this confident release, which logically furthers previous album FALLEN's brooding alternative-metal sound. It seems like a minor miracle that Evanescence released their second album at all, given the behind-the-scenes toil and trouble that surrounded the aftermath of their 2003 debut, Fallen, turning into an unexpected blockbuster. ...

Daughtry music CDs
$13.69 (MP3 Available for Download) Personnel: Tim Pierce (guitar); Rob Cavallo (guitars, piano); Neal Tiemann (guitars); Jamie Muhoberac (piano, organ, keyboards); Paul Bushnell (bass instrument); Dorian Crozier (drums, programming). Audio Mixer: Chris Lord-Alge. In the epic David vs. David face-off at the end of AMERICAN IDOL's seventh season, teen pop sensation David Archuleta was decisively defeated by more experienced rock performer David Cook, who issued this 2008 self-titled debut a week after Archuleta's own album. Aided by a veritable army of veteran alt-rock songwriters, including Johnny Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls) and Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace), Cook shines brightest with "Light On," a soaring anthem co-penned by Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave). Seven years into its run and American Idol has finally produced a winner who can hold his own and work with his own Idols. This says more about David Cook, grand champion of season seven, than it does of the franchise itself: AmIdol suffered a significant ratings slowdown during its no-drama seventh season and, despite the megastardom of Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, and Chris Daughtry, major-league stars only saw the show as a way to hock a new album. Fortunately, major-league stars hold no fascination for David Cook. As he proved time and time again on the show, Cook's greatest wish was to be an American Our Lady Peace, a hurdle that's not exactly hard to clear. This low ambition works in Cook's favor on his eponymous major-label debut as it gives him a goal that's achievable -- plus, it's been so long that this sound has been in fashion that his heroes are waiting in ...

Daughtry songs
$15.45 (MP3 Available for Download) Personnel: Chris Daughtry (vocals, guitar); Brian Craddock, Josh Steely (guitar); Phil X. (guitars); Aubrey Haynie (fiddle); Howard Benson (keyboards, programming); Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); Josh Paul (bass instrument); Joey Barnes (drums); Michito Sánchez (percussion). Audio Mixer: Chris Lord-Alge. Arranger: Debbie Lurie. When he was recording his debut album in 2006, Chris Daughtry didn't have the time to assemble the real rock band he so desperately wanted to have, so it appeared under the band name Daughtry without featuring any of the musicians who later became part of the group. That's not the case with LEAVE THIS TOWN, Daughtry's second record: all five members are glowering on the album cover, floating like specters over an abandoned Californian street. The five rockers serve as visual evidence that Daughtry is a band, not a person, and such reminders may be necessary because LEAVE THIS TOWN doesn't differ much in feel or form from DAUGHTRY. Overall, LEAVE THIS TOWN isn't quite as studio slick as DAUGHTRY, which was fueled by Chris Daughtry's desire prove that he belonged in the big leagues; here, he's achieved that goal ...

| | Biff Rose Fill Your Heart With CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Daughtry MP3 Album
$17.89 Fill Your Heart with Biff Rose does a good job of drawing 18 tracks from Biff Rose's 1968-1985 recordings; about two-thirds of it is taken from his pre-1973 output. The most famous of his songs, "Fill Your Heart" (covered by David Bowie on Hunky Dory), is here, of course, as is "Buzz the Fuzz," which Bowie can be heard doing on a live 1970 bootleg (but never officially released). For collectors, there's a rare non-LP 1969 single, "Take Care of My Brother"/"Myrtle's Pies," taken from sessions for an unreleased album that didn't get far; the A-side in particular has somewhat more elaborate production than much of his early material, though it's still not exactly conventional pop. Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions, there's nothing from his pair of early-'70s Buddah albums, which leaves a bit of a gap from his prime. That's enough to keep this from being the best single-disc Rose compilation that could have been assembled. As compensation, there are informed liner notes about his enigmatic career, though he's no more peculiar ...

| | Adam & The Ants Prince Charming CD (1981) (Import) Reissue; Remastered; Japan
Daughtry songs
$9.89 Digitally remastered and expanded jewelcased edition of British New Wave act's 1981 album, the final release by the Ants before Adam went solo. Dropping the pirate gear, Adam became both a prince and a 'dandy highwayman' for this album, creating a set of songs that were sonically unlike anything on his previous releases. Although still melodic, the songs were less rhythmic and even more theatrical than before. Features 16 tracks including 'Stand And Deliver', 'Ant Rap', 'Scorpios' and the title track plus six bonus tracks, 'Prince Charming' (demo version), 'Showbiz' (unreleased demo), 'Picasso Vista El Planeta De Los Suimios' (unreleased version), 'Who's a Goofy Bunny Then? (unreleased demo) and 'Scorpio Writingf' (demo version). Columbia.
Adam & The Ants: Adam Ant, Maco Pirroni (vocals, guitar); Kevin Mooney (bass); Merrick, Terry Lee Miall (drums). U.K. edition features six bonus tracks, "Prince Charming" (demo version), "Showbiz" (unreleased song demo), "Picasso Vista El Planeta De Los Suimios" (unreleased demo version), "Who's A Goofy Bunny Then?" (unreleased song demo), & "Scorpio Writing" (demo version). Kings of the Wild Frontier brought Adam & the Ants massive popularity in England and enormous pressure for Adam Ant and guitarist Marco Pirroni to stand and deliver another slice of dynamite. The first single, the punchy, horn-laden "Stand and Deliver," suggested that they were up to the task, but when Prince Charming appeared in late 1981, it was seen as a letdown. With its ridiculous song titles and cover photos, which suggest that the Ants were moving away from Native Americans and toward pirates, it's hard not to view it as a descent into camp, yet Ant claims in the liner notes for Antbox that he believes that Prince Charming is "a very serious record based on very classical, historical themes." That may be true on certain tracks, but it's hard to see where "Mile High Club," "S.E.X.," "Mowhok," and "Ant Rap" fit into that scheme, although he's right about the intent -- this is a markedly different record than Kings, and intentionally so. The group not only moved on in terms of image, but also left behind its signature Burundi beats while upping the cinematic qualities inherent in its music. So, "Five Guns West" and "Mowhok" are given neo-spaghetti Western backdrops, while eerie guitars, mariachi horns, and trilling vocals underpin "That Voodoo." There are a lot of little details like that to dwell on in the production -- "Picasso Visita el Planeta de los Simios" sounds absolutely terrific -- and songs like "Scorpios," "Stand and Deliver," and the cheerfully ludicrous "Ant Rap" are highlights. Kings had style, sound, and songs, while Prince Charming simply has style and sound -- which, in retrospect, isn't all that bad. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Kings of the Wild Frontier brought Adam and the Ants massive popularity in England, and it brought enormous pressure for Adam and guitarist Marco Pirroni to stand and deliver another slice of dynamite. The first single, the punchy horn-laden "Stand and Deliver," suggested that they were up to the task, but when Prince Charming appeared in late 1981, it was pretty much universally panned and it still stands as the weakest record from Ant's classic period. With its ridiculous song titles and cover photos, which suggest that the Ants were moving away from Native Americans and toward pirates, it's hard not to view it as a descent into camp, yet Adam claims in the liner notes for Antbox that he believes that Prince Charming is "a very serious record based on very classical, historical ...

| | Chumbawamba A Singsong and a Scrap CD (2006)
Daughtry CD music
$11.35 (MP3 Available for Download) Chumbawamba: Barry Cooper , Jim Boyes, Lester Simpson (vocals); Winkie Thin (whistling, cello, accordion); Ian Telfer (fiddle); James O'Grady (whistle, Uilleann pipe); Richard Ormrod (accordion). While it's a slimmed-down (four person) and definitely acoustic Chumbawamba releasing their disc on a U.K. folk label (No Masters) with some decidedly folkie guests like melodeon player Andy Cutting and singers Coope, Boyes & Simpson, don't think of this as a folk record. Chumbawamba's pop sensibilities and sly sense of humor remain firmly intact for Singsong and a Scrap, just in a different setting. They're as political as ever -- the vocal beauty of "Walking into Battle with the Lord" uses traditional structures to take aim at war in the name of religion, and "The Land of Do What You're Told" fires its shots across the bows of reality shows, for example. But there's an odd tenderness to "When Alexander Met Emma," the story of revolutionary Emma Goldman's great love, and "William Francis," about a friendless aristocrat and landowner. "Learning to Love" stands the old idea of the maid waiting for her man to return from war on its head, and "Bella Ciao" offers new, very relevant words to a traditional Italian song. Yet there's also a glorious cover of the Clash's "Bankrobber" here, the voices soaring on the works and strengthening the notions of poverty and idealism. The band have improved ...
