The long established musical relationship between guitarists Dave Specter and Steve Freund goes back nearly 20 years, when Specter sought out Freund as a guitar teacher. They have shared many stages, but this marks the first occasion that they have recorded together. In the best of the Chicago blues tradition as illustrated by the legendary Delmark label, Is What It Is is a loose, swinging, tough blues date filled with great tunes, inspired playing and loose-groove vibes. While Specter has become well-known for his jazzy blues playing, his former teacher Freund has stayed close to the roots of the Chicago sound. That contrast works beautifully here on both covers and originals. Freund's tunes are some of the bets on the set as evidenced by the opener "My Little Playhouse." One of the reasons for this is his deep, clear soulful singing which adds punch and nuance to the dueling guitars Specter brings classy elegance to the set in his instrumentals, like the title track that carries a deeply Southern-fried funk to the more urban Chicago sound and the shuffling gutbucket stroll of "Riverside Ride," where the two players wind around and through one another exuberantly. Chicago's Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials are, and have always been, a hard-rocking, blues-fueled dance band, the kind you hope to catch down at the local bar on a payday Friday night, but just like the aftereffects of a Friday night spent down at the local bar, the music on this, the group's sixth album for Alligator Records, loses clarity and starts to slip from memory as soon as Saturday's sun hits the sky. Sure, everything on Rattleshake rocks, and the energy is undeniable, but in the end, little of this set stays in mind. The opener, a rousing take on Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Leaving Here," starts things off nicely, but somehow things rock along from there without featuring much substance, and most of the set blends into one long dancefloor romp where what ends up being most memorable is the cold beer you throw down at the end. Oh, "Icicles in My Meatloaf" is certainly memorable, but only because it is so ridiculous. The real highlight here, and easily the best track on the album, is a moving version of Billy Joe Shaver's "Tramp on the Street," which shows that Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials can do more than just rock the house with generic stompers when they choose to do so. They're a great live band, and in their natural habitat -- on-stage -- they're tough to beat, but in spite of several albums, they still haven't figured out how to translate that raw energy to the studio. An album is different than a Friday night at the local bar. In the latter, a mediocre song done with energy by the band will still get folks dancing and bopping. Originally issued in 2005 in the band's native Poland and quickly deleted, Voices in My Head was a follow up to the band's debut full-length, Out of Myself. The original EP is here augmented by three live tracks and a video for the song "Acronym Love." Newcomers may be surprised by the lush approachability of Riverside's sound; the band is generally assigned to the prog/metal category, but the only apparent reason for that is the general sense of grandiosity that informs its music. For most metal bands, grandiosity is bad news, taking what might otherwise be salutary noise and turning it into giggle-inducing silliness. But for Riverside it's a sonic principle rather than a posture, and it works very well. The hideously named "DNA TS. Rednum or F. Raf" ("Far from Understand"?) is dark and gorgeous, with acoustic ...
