Of all the recent excavation projects inspired by our voracious musical culture, none is more fascinating than Pat Conte's SECRET MUSEUM series for Yazoo. Till now, a Western listener's familiarity with ethnic music from the distant past has depended on unsexy field recordings of relatively recent vintage, produced in a spirit of near-scientific inquiry by anthropologically minded musicologists. When the commercial record business really began to expand in the late '20s however, just about every national style of music was sought out and captured for a growing marketplace. This was true "world music," dressed in its Sunday best perhaps as performed by ambitious locals, but still more vital than the academic, folklorist approach that followed.

Luka Bloom seems more influenced by geography than most singer/songwriters. If RIVERSIDE was the sound of an Irishman in Chinatown (as one song so aptly put it), and THE ACOUSTIC MOTORBIKE was a return home to the traditional rhythms of Irish folk music, TURF stands apart from geography, cohesively blending the themes of both previous albums.
This time however, besides a few embellishments, the album is almost entirely Bloom and his guitar alone (four tracks were recorded live in a pub). Working without a net seems to bring out the best in his songwriting, including a newfound ability to address weighty subjects; "Freedom Song" evokes not only Dublin squatters but American civil rights icon Rosa Parks in a stark statement of the universality of human rights. However, TURF also addresses less weighty concerns; "Holding Back the River" and "Right Here Right Now" show that Luka Bloom seems to write beautiful love songs as easily as buying a pint. While attempting to show off the diversity of Argentine music beyond the omnipresent tango, The Rough Guide to the Music of Argentina may have countered its own intentions, by displaying a wide variety of tango, certainly, but also by displaying other non-tango styles, wherein it happens that the influences of tango can be heard quite often. That said, it's an excellent primer for the diversity of the tango, with small additions from outside the genre. The album opens with a vocal tango courtesy of Adriana Varela, before moving into some candombe-inspired very early-style tango from la Chicana. Some straightforward folksinging from the powerful voice of Lorena Astudillo marks the first departure from the main focus here, but the sound turns quickly enough back to the tango, with a surprisingly capable rendition on the harmonica. Juan Carlos Caceres updates the sound with a little more rhythm, and two of the brightest lights in instrumental music are presented in sequence, with Osbaldo Piro's emotive bandoneon playing and Roberto Grela's excellent guitar work, both former members of Anibal Troilo's legendary bands. Walter Rios performs the heaviest, strangest rendition of "La Cumparsita" you're ever likely to hear, followed immediately by another updating of sorts, with the addition of salsa piano riffing to the basics of milonga song. At this point, the biggest three names in tango come in a somewhat out-of-order sequence: Carlos Gardel provides a nice vocal piece (unfortunately not "Por una Cabeza," but good nonetheless), followed by a piece from Astor Piazzolla and his Four Seasons suite, and then a work from Anibal Troilo (who, realistically, should have been between Gardel and Piazzolla) -- all excellent pieces from the greatest artists.
