Callbox
$8.99 "Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to someone you already know," goes the intro of "Choosin'," the opening track of Too Short's MARRIED TO THE GAME. Remarkably, the Oakland rapper's name still has clout decades after he released his first album out of his car at the dawn of hip-hop in 1983. In fact, it would be pretty safe to call Too Short the first West Coast hip-hop superstar, influencing every West Coast rap act, from the hardcore bounce of NWA to the intellectual musings of the Hieroglyphics.
MARRIED TO THE GAME opens with Too Short hanging out at the corner of the club with Jagged Edge and Jazze Pha, waiting for the girls to come to him on the funky "Choosin'." Short shows he can still deliver on the cautionary tale with the hauntingly eerie and reflective "That's How It Goes Down." Throughout the album, Short Dog ably fuses newer Dirty South-esque beats with old-school player style, nowhere more appealingly than on "Shake That Monkey" as 2003's experts on the subject, Lil Jon & the Eastside Boyz, drop by. On his 15th record, Too Short proves he can still bring something new to the game.
Personal: Too Short, Jazze Pha, Oobie, Petey Pablo, N.O.R.E., Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz, Devin The Dude, Cutty Cartel (rap vocals); Jagged Edge (vocals); Craig Love (guitar); Lroc (keyboards); Lamarquis Jefferson (bass); Val Young, Shanell Fearing (background vocals).

| | Ike & Tina Turner Dance With Ike & Tina Turner CD (1971)
Callbox
$9.95 Ike and Tina Turner's tenure on the Blue Thumb label, like all their other label stays, was stormy, uneven, and occasionally productive. They only remained with the company a short time, but recorded enough material for two full albums. These were both cranked out in 1969, and this anthology features the best 16 cuts. It includes the odd single "The Hunter," and a good remake of Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long," and the ahead-of-its-time "Bold Soul Sister." It has long since disappeared... ~ Ron Wynn
Ike And Tina Turner's tenure on the Blue Thumb label, like all their other label stays, was stormy, uneven, and occasionally productive. They only remained with the company a short time, but recorded enough material for two full albums. These were both cranked out in 1969, and this anthology supposedly features the best 16 cuts. It includes the odd single "The Hunter," and a good remake of Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long," and the ahead-of-its-time "Bold Soul Sister." | | It's Christmas Time Again CD (1990)
Callbox
$7.89 It's Christmas Time Again compiles 12 entertaining, bluesy, and funky holiday songs by Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, Albert King, and others. Fans of the Stax catalog will note that some of these songs have appeared elsewhere, including various volumes of the massive The Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles series. This is a solid, unified holiday album offering some hot tracks that will raise the temperature of any holiday gathering. Standout tracks include Mack Rice's "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'" and Rufus Thomas' "I'll Be Your Santa Baby'," both of which are adult, sexy numbers. Thanks to Stax for pulling these classics together from across disparate albums. (The disc's only downside is its short running time of just over 40 minutes.) No Christmas collection is complete without this offering. ~ JT Griffith
Save for the Atco Soul Christmas compilation, there isn't another post-'50s R&B Christmas album that can beat this collection of gems from the Stax vaults. Of the ten songs, Albert King gets two, both with leads on his Flying V, including his cover of "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'" (Mack Rice's original is also included). Rufus Thomas's "I'll Be Your Santa Baby" will get people away from that punchbowl and onto the dance floor, but there's plenty here for the mistletoe segment of your office party: Little Johnny Taylor's fine version of "Please Come Home for Christmas" and the beautiful falsetto lead in The Temprees' "The Christmas Song." The Staple Singers' "Who Took the Merry out of Christmas?" is one of their best grooves ever, despite what the title might imply. ~ Dennis MacDonald, ...

| | Homecoming: Eddie Daniels Live At The Iridium CDs (2007)
Callbox
$14.65 This two-CD set features the brilliant clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Eddie Daniels live at the Iridium in New York during a four-day engagement. Daniels is a great virtuoso on clarinet who can play either jazz or classical music with equal skill. His tenor playing is sometimes overshadowed, but listen to how he rips into "Falling In Love with Love," never running out of creative ideas during his lengthy solo, and his explorative improvisation on a version of "Night and Day" that is reminiscent of "Giant Steps." Daniels alternates standards with obscurities and complex originals including the rapid "That's for Afta," which is based on the chord changes of "After You've Gone." With fine solos also contributed by vibraphonist Joe Locke and pianist Tom Ranier, Daniels is inspired to play at his best throughout. This set concludes with briefer "radio edits" taken from three of the performances. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Paul Karapiperis Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales CD (2009)
Callbox
$9.85 As the leader of Greek blues band Small Blues Trap, Paul Karapiperis has become known for his raspy, guttural vocal style and fiery, take-no-prisoners harmonica playing. Paul's unleashed more of the same upon us with his new solo album,"Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales".The record starts out with the short, Delta-like harmonica instrumental "Welcome Onboard! Clap Your Hands!" the perfect intro to a disc ripe with raw, emotional moaning at midnight blues. "A Voodoo Woman Can..." is a foot-stomping, back-porch blues showcasting Karapiperis' steel slide guitar skills, and nearly a minute of hypnotic tremolo effect as the song fades out - you 're instantly transported to the cotton fields of Mississippi. "In Wood Alcohol Line" another rural-flavored blues cut, is sparse in instrumentation, but huge in emotional impact. Karapiperis has a talent for creating emotional depth with very little, often just a harmonica and simple percussion track. "Midnight Ride" is a fine example of that, it's a two-minute-long instrumental that sounds as if Karapiperis' soul exploded and is being filtered through the mouthpiece of his harmonica.Karapiperis to me has always sounded like a cool hybrid of Tom Waits and Howlin'Wolf. Listen to track "Goodbye My Good Luck" and you 'll see why. The pure, hungry vocal passion of those two artists is present and Karapiperis' vocals only enhance his jagged, piercing, minimalist songwriting. His style of blues is meant to be felt, you won't have any difficulty feeling music that is this coarse, at times abrasive yet grippingly passionate. Karapiperis is not trying to rehash traditional blues. He 's got a style ...
