| | Strictly The Best Vol. 36 CD (1 Customer Review)
The 36th entry in the consistently profitable Strictly the Best series breaks away from the line's usual dancehall focus and instead offers a solid hour of modern lovers rock -- most of it quite good, some of it excellent, but one or two entries mystifyingly awful. The best offerings come from Morgan Heritage (whose "Love You Right" is the kind of sweet, solid pop reggae that this band was born to play), from up-and-coming singer Cherine (whose "Good Love" somehow manages to sound more innocent than it is) and Roger Robin (whose "For Life" is a surprisingly sweet avowal of fidelity and permanence -- sentiments not often encountered in modern reggae, and practically never in the dancehall). Chuck Fender and Cherine team up for a nice combination track on "Coming Over," and Jah Cure does a decent job on "What Will It Take," though the whininess of the song's title is eclipsed by the even greater whininess of his vocal. The album's two real let-down tracks come courtesy of Mr. Vegas, whose "Do You Know" is just far enough out of tune to make the track a chore to sit through, and I Wayne, whose "Life Seeds" is just plain horrible -- an unlistenable voice-and-guitar ballad that has neither a good melody nor any compelling rhythm nor even pleasant vocals to recommend it. The album ends on a mixed note: Della Manley sings beautifully on the rather folky "I Know," but Mutabaruka is completely wasted on this track: instead of toasting with his usual political incisiveness, he grunts brief, repetitive and content-free phrases between her stanzas. A mixed bag, but very good overall. ~ Rick Anderson Strictly The Best Vol. 36 Music | List Price | $16.98 (You save $5.89) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rap CDs, Reggae, Reggae/Ska/Calypso, Dancehall / Ragga, Dj Toasters, Oldies Collections | | Label | VP | | Orig Year | 2006 | | All Time Sales Rank | 71144 | | CD Universe Part number | 7306024 | | Catalog number | 1770 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Nov 21, 2006 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Christopher Birch; Devon Wheatley; Nigel Burrell; Patrick Henry; Wayne "DJ Wayne" Morris; Ricky Genious; Orville Thomas; Carl James; Everton Hardware; Lloyd Campbell; Michelle Campbell; Robbie Shakespeare; Sly Dunbar; Bitty McLean; Donovan Bennett; Joel Chin (Compilation); Lorna Darby (Compilation); Edwin Howell (Compilation) |

| | Rihanna Good Girl Gone Bad CD (2007)
Strictly The Best Vol. 36
$14.05 Personnel: Rihanna (vocals). Additional personnel: Jay-Z, Ne-Yo (rap vocals). The music of Barbados-born singer Rihanna--a breezy blend of hip-hop, commercial pop, and Caribbean flavors--made her a bona fide superstar before the age of 20. Given her immediate success, one had to wonder if Rihanna would be a flash in the pan, but her third album, 2007's GOOD GIRL GONE BAD, is a winner. Interestingly, Rihanna avoids the Caribbean tinge that made her breakthrough single "Pon the Replay" a massive hit, sticking instead to more straightforward dance-pop designed for the club and the singles charts. More interesting still, she pulls it off with assurance and skill. It doesn't hurt that heavyweight producers ...

Strictly The Best Vol. 36
$29.35 Now-Again Records, an affiliate of Stones Throw, has been putting out previously hard-to-find funk and soul, mostly on vinyl, since 2001. On Now Again Re:Sounds, Vol. 1, labelhead Egon (aka Eothen Alapatt) got a selection of mostly Stones Throw artists -- though people like Kenny Dope and Cut Chemist also make appearances -- to remix or reinterpret some of these songs, or in some cases, write their own new ones entirely ("Trouble Will Remain" by Amnesty, some of whose members are also in the Mighty Imperials and the Dap-Kings, and "Free Your Mind" by Sound in Light, whose drum loops are provided by Koushik, who also contributes to two other tracks). A lot of what's included has never been released before, in any format, and the rest of it has only been made available on 12"s or 7"s, which makes Re:Sounds a pretty alluring collection ...
| | Invisible Sun CD (2007)
Strictly The Best Vol. 36
$8.55 Invisible Sun is a project I've wanted to do for a long time. After playing bass with other bands as a side man I finally decided to take the reins and lead my own project. I got right to work writing and about eight month later I had some tunes that I felt myself and the other players could stand behind. Although I wasn't able to put all of the songs I prepared on this Cd, there will be plenty of material for the ...
