| | Love Depression CD (2003)
Coming Home CD music
$12.85 And the unearthing of various psychedelic-era obscurities continues. In this case, the chosen representatives -- reflecting turn of the century interest in a comparatively little-known Latin American '60s scene -- were from Venezuela; a teenage trio signed for a three-album contract that only recorded the one in 1968. The sparse liner notes indicate that it was pretty much the band's standard set, and as such, reveals that they were essentially a cover group with a fondness for soul -- the sole original, "Gonna Ride," kicks things off. It's actually a surprisingly blasting number once it hits the chorus, guitarist Alvaro Falcon going certifiably crazy via overdubs (in interesting contrast, the band's also good at simply ...

| | Malford Milligan Rides Again... CD (2006)
Coming Home album
$11.49 Malford Milligan has been belting out his own blend of blues, soul, gospel, funk, and rock & roll from his home base of Austin, TX, for many years, working and recording with a lengthy roster of talent that includes Storyville, Double Trouble, the Boneshakers, Eric Johnson, Sue Foley, and Marcia Ball. Milligan, whose influences range from Joni Mitchell to Al Green and Stevie Wonder, didn't begin releasing albums under his own name until well after he had passed the age of 40. His rendition of Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was the Night" set the tone for the album The Gospel According to Austin, Vol. 2 in 2001. Sweet Cherry Soul appeared in 2002 on Stagger Lee Records, No Good Deed Goes Unpunished came out on the Austin to Boston label in 2004, and Rides Again... was released by Mass Appeal in 2006. Rides Again... might just be his best piece of work to date, as maturity gives Malford a leonine ...

$14.69 With a lineup including Big Al Dupree on piano, John Garza on bass and the production expertise of Anson Funderburgh, Jungle Jane is a solid collection (mostly originals by Smith) including "2 Dollar Woman," "Telephone Boogie" and "Thirty Days of Torture." ~ John Bush

| | Catdaddy Jones Late Night In The Dog House CD (2003)
Coming Home CD music
$12.85 Catdaddy Jones, a busman's holiday for four veteran New York sidemen, Geoff Worton, M.D. Meyer, Steve Merola, and Paul Bisbano, is a straight-ahead blues-rock band in a familiar style. The promotional sheet for their debut album, Late Night in the Doghouse, says, "Think the Asbury Jukes with a grittier singer and Jeff Beck on guitar!," and among the "key selling points" is this: "Record will appeal to fans of Steve Winwood, Rod Stewart, Memphis soul and urban blues." But these comparisons are not quite on the mark. In fact, if one were to listen to Late Night in the Doghouse without any information about the artists involved, it would be easy, at least the first time through, to suppose that the disc was some lost album by the Fabulous Thunderbirds. The roadhouse rhythms, screaming blues guitar, and, in particular, the powerful lead vocals all suggest the Texas band. True, there isn't any harmonica on the record, and there are some female backup vocals here and there, but fans ...
