| | J J Jackson But It's Alright CD (1967)
Christmas Is A Special Day MP3 Album
$9.95 Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between flat-out rockers like "I Dig Girls," "Come See Me (I'm Your Man)" (which was written by Jackson, covered by the Pretty Things, and then reclaimed powerfully here), and "Boogaloo Baby," midtempo groovers like "You've Got ...

| | B B King Mr. Blues/Confessin' The Blues CD (2005) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Christmas Is A Special Day songs
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by an antiquated big band and/or orchestra. Arguably the best of the lot comes from the Maxwell Davis led ensemble on the first of several Big Joe Turner tunes, the Ahmet Ertegun penned "Chains of Love." The upgrade of Ivory Joe Hunter's "Blues at Midnight" ...

Christmas Is A Special Day MP3 Album
$12.85 Lots of people make adult pop these days; precious few do it as well as Young and Sexy. Hailing from the dead center of the indie pop world in 2003, the Vancouver band follows up its remarkable debut, 2002's Stand Up for Your Mother, with an album that is remarkably just as good. Life Through One Speaker is everything the first album was (intelligent, catchy, emotional, inventive) and then some (epic, beautiful). The band sounds more at ease in the studio, and as a result the songs sound more relaxed and fuller. The extra coat of professional studio gloss that might sink most indie pop bands seems to suit them quite nicely. The band sounds like a classic mid-'80s pop group (Prefab Sprout, Beautiful South), only without the cheesy '80s technology getting in the way. While the record lacks a killer single, it sports exquisite songcraft and performances from the opening notes of the stately "Oh My Love" to the fade of the sweet self-referential ballad "Young & Sexy." Lucy Brain's sweet, clear vocals are ...
| | Soldier String Quartet Inspect For Damaged Gods CD (2004)
Christmas Is A Special Day music CDs
$20.25 Recorded over the course of the mid- '90s, Inspect for Damaged Gods covers much of the avant-garde territory that the Soldier String Quartet's various incarnations are known for. The album starts out in a scratchy, twangy, old-time rendition of a Robert Johnson number, followed immediately with Bo Diddley's eponymous hit (which Soldier likely took to after a time touring with Diddley), redone in a loping rhythm and some more primitive sounds. Shifting over almost seamlessly into a smooth bit of gypsy jazz, Regina Carter takes the lead on a sweet version of "Here Comes the King." Tributes to friends and musicians Michael Callen and Susan Sontag take the tempo down a fair deal, moving through a chamber music format into a bit of a tango before a funky stringed cover of a Sly Stone piece. A bluesy piece follows, itself leading into a slowly swinging tribute to New Orleans. The album finishes on a collection of Indian proverbs and stories mixed with a nice line on the balofon and some basic bass and drum kit accompaniment that builds into a much larger sound by the end. Over the course of the album, the group manages to show off everything that a string quartet can possibly do, and a number of things that they never do. This quartet, maybe not as well-known as the Kronos Quartet, is somewhat more adventurous, and branches out into territories you won't hear a classical group in. Always ...
