John Coltrane / Thelonious Monk / Thelonious Quartet Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005) Top Seller
Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album CD music On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights.
The quartet shines on ballads ("Sweet and Lovely"), but the leaders display their best chemistry on the Monk's thorny, uptempo bop numbers. "Evidence" and "Epistrophy," for instance," have Monk adding rhythmic, dissonant punctuation to Coltrane's torrential stream of ideas, creating a thrilling push-pull balance. A superb date, and a must for fans of both artists, AT CARNEGIE HALL captures two of jazz's most important figures working in perfect symbiosis.

Electric Light Orchestra New World Record - Expanded Edition CD (1976)
Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album album for sale Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Their #5 smash from '76 gave ELO its first platinum record, and it's probably their most consistent creation. The hits Livin' Thing; Do Ya , and Telephone Line join Rockaria; Tight Rope ; a full six bonus cuts and more!

Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album buy CD music Sonic Boom was not released until 1979 and then remained in print only for a brief time before eventually being reissued years later. In addition to the great trumpeter Lee Morgan and a fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins), the well-rounded set is a bit special for it allows the often R&B-associated tenor David "Fathead" Newman an opportunity to stretch out in a more challenging setting than usual. Highlights include the funky "Fathead," the complex "Sneaky Pete," Morgan's lyricism on "I'll Never Be the Same," and the infectious rhythms on "Mumbo Jumbo." This is an undeservedly obscure session. ~ Scott Yanow

Bobby Hutcherson Happenings CD (1966)
Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album songs HAPPENINGS was vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's fourth Blue Note release as a leader. Where its predecessors DIALOGUE and COMPONENTS were packed with challenging avant-bop, HAPPENINGS instead brings things down a notch. With pianist Herbie Hancock, drummer Joe Chambers, and bassist Bob Cranshaw on board, Hutcherson keeps the tone fairly light, performing his original compositions (the exception is Hancock's "Maiden Voyage") with a mellow, swinging style that emphasizes modal exploration. The performances are all top-notch, and the album still weighs in as one of the best in Hutcherson's fine catalogue.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 8, 1966.

Antonio Carlos Jobim / Frank Sinatra Sinatra/Jobim: The Complete Reprise Recordings CD (2010) Top Seller
Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album album for sale This compilation album gathers tracks from two sets of recording sessions Frank Sinatra did with Brazilian singer/songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim, one in 1967 and another in 1969. The first set of sessions in late January and early February 1967 resulted in the ten-track LP Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim, released later in 1967. Jobim joined Sinatra, singing on such tracks as "The Girl from Ipanema," "I Concentrate on You," and "Baubles, Bangles and Beads," with bossa nova arrangements by Claus Ogerman. The second set of sessions held in February 1969 were intended for a follow-up LP to be called SinatraJobim that got as far as having an album cover designed, but never came out. Most of the tracks were issued in 1971, during Sinatra's temporary retirement, on an album called Sinatra & Company, although a couple turned up on singles in the U.S. or overseas, and the Sinatra/Jobim duet "Off Key (Desafinado)" sat in the can for decades, not turning up until the box set The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings in 1995. Despite being separated by two years, the first ten tracks and the second ten fit well together. Sinatra sings gently and sensitively throughout. The chief difference lies in the musical backing, as the 1969 tracks were arranged by Eumir Deodato, with orchestra conducted by Morris Stoloff, and they have less of a Brazilian feel. Still, the sessions have always belonged together on a single disc, and they constitute a special niche in the Sinatra catalog. ~ William Ruhlmann

Tony Bennett Together Again CD (1976)
Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album CD music 1975's TONY BENNETT/BILL EVANS ALBUM turned out to be such a landmark recording in both artists' careers that a reunion was inevitable. Like their previous collaboration, TOGETHER AGAIN is strictly a duo recording, with only Bennett's unique voice and Evans' artful piano to keep each other company. Again like their previous album, nothing more is required. Evans' elegant, classically-influenced jazz phrasing and Bennett's unparalleled storytelling abilities are more than enough to get these tunes across.
On such selections as Rodgers and Hart's "You're Nearer" and the classic "You Don't Know What Love Is," both men take advantage of the sonic space around them to fully explore the melodic and harmonic potential of the tunes without ever straying from the heart of the songs. On "A Child Is Born," Bennett demonstrates his dynamic range by alternating between delicate near-whisper and stately, trumpet-like tones. Evans matches him step for step throughout the album, setting up a fluid, impressionistic backdrop for Bennett's poignant readings.
The concept couldn't have been simpler, nor could it have been more perfect, just Tony Bennett and Bill Evans, Together Again, in the wee small hours of the morning, engaged in an intimate musical dialog, with the recording tape rolling. Originally released in 1977 on Bennett's own Improv label, Concord Records is proud and honored to make this timeless classic available again. Remixed & remastered in high definition digital it features 18 tracks including 5 previously unreleased bonus tracks, 'A Child Is Born' (Alt.), 'You Must Believe In Spring' (Alt.), 'Maybe September' (Alt.), 'You Don't Know What Love Is' (Alt.) & 'The Bad And The Beautiful' (Alt.).
