On 2006's I'M STILL LIVIN, Houston-based rapper Z-Ro (born Joseph McVey) paints a vivid picture of ghetto life. Highlights of the album include "City Streets," which features a cinematic arrangement and a weeping hard-rock guitar sample, and the disarmingly sensitive "T.H.U.G. (True Hero Under God)," a track that inventively places fast, frenetic rhymes against a gentle, Quiet Storm-style backdrop.

I'm Still Livin. Z-RO is ten years strong in the rap game plus g-maab. If you sleepin on it you betta wake up. I do think his beats could've been betta, but his lyrics make up for it. Z-RO on the cover; GET IT! The greatest since TUPAC. Hanh Bra.

Ro's Best Yet
That boy Ro went fed on this CD. I have not stopped listening to it since I bought it. Many people compare Z-Ro to 2Pac, and I agree there are many similarities, but Ro has truly made himself an artist in his own right. Now if only the music industry would give him his rightful place, things would be so much better. Z-Ro, dog keep doing your thing.

A veteran of 10 albums at the age of 26 and an acclaimed member of Houston's Screwed Up Click, Z-Ro is much more complex than his surface or the simple intro of THE LIFE OF JOSEPH W. MCVEY may imply. Prolific output isn't the only thing he has in common with hardcore legends such as Too Short and Rap-A-Lot icon Scarface; Z-Ro also cuts his hard-edged street delivery with a haunting, almost hypnotic, introspection.
As this album reveals, Z-Ro deeply feels every word he sings. With "I Hate U B***h," the song is not so much a misogynistic rant as the pained, primal gut-reaction of a devoted man who's been hurt by the object of his affection (the line after the title is "I never thought I would say [it]"). On the melodic "Why?," he ponders the insanity of the thug life, wishing he could be loving and simple, spiritual and comfortable, but uncertain of how to find his escape. THE LIFE OF JOSEPH MCVEY reveals a tortured soul who concurrently knows himself and doesn't understand a thing, making this an achingly honest record that deserves to break Z-Ro through to new audiences.
This is an example of the Southern Rap "screwed" mix style.

This sort of variety marks LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD, a wonderfully dynamic record that finds the under-the-radar rapper continuing to do what he does best, in both viciously dark and easy-going manners. On "Platinum," Z-Ro raps about the softer and harder sides of the business over a lush backing track, while on "I'm a Soldier" he reverts to edgy posturing with sufficient force. Although Z-Ro churns out records, he puts his heart into each one, and LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD stands as prime example of his skill.
