One of the best albums ever made about the end of a relationship and the trauma that results, Over is the harrowing document of the failure of a long-term relationship Peter Hammill had been in. With a brief side-step to examine the loss felt by parents when their children move out ("Autumn"), Hammill exposes feelings of guilt, rage, betrayal, attempts at understanding, and attempts at healing. From the self-recrimination of the furious "Crying Wolf," to the angry lashing out of "Time Heals," through the heart-wrenching sadness of "This Side Of The Looking Glass" (with Hammill turning in a beautiful vocal performance against an orchestral setting), to the extremely tentative healing steps of "Lost And Found" (which includes a middle eighth that concludes "La Rossa" from Van Der Graaf Generator's Still Life, but in a cynical way), the songs avoid compromise and simplicity, making this a sometimes difficult listening experience; the lyrics are often bitterly clever and cutting. Beautifully produced, Over is Peter Hammill at his musical and lyrical best. ~ Steven McDonald
2006 digitally remastered edition of the Van Der Graaf Generator frontman's sixth solo album that was originally released in 1977. The album deals with the gamut of feeling and emotions associated with the end of long term relationships in Hammill's most intelligent and inspired songs.

| | Future Now CD (1978) +2 Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Over album
$19.79 The Future Now is one of Peter Hammill's best and most disconcerting albums since the mid-'70s. Filled with beautiful piano ballads, strange experiments, and anthemic rock songs, it stands as multi-faceted as the artist -- who, incidentally, shaved half of his facial hair for the eye-catching cover shot. Hammill has never mastered the art of the opening track, and this album marks no exception: "Pushing Thirties" is a bland, surprise-less rock song. Once you pass that gate though, wonders succeed one another in your ears. In the ballad department, "If I Could" shines like a diamond. This beautiful love song about a man who will never be able to keep his wife from leaving would remain a regular feature in Hammill's concerts for the next 25 years, but no later recording matches this studio version. "The Mousetrap (Caught In)" -- the story of an actor performing the same play for the last 30 years -- is another highlight. Unstable fuzz guitar ...

| | Surf City: The California Sound CD (1995) CD & Book
Over songs
$12.89 The reason Surf City works as a good compilation is that it features examples of both the instrumental surf rock and the more radio friendly surf pop of the early '60s. The companion book issued with the CD is a phenomenal account of the style's history. Beginning with a brief look at the culture of white middle class society in southern California, the book shifts its focus to rather lengthy biographies of the genre's most prolific artists. It shows how the major players, like Dick Dale and the Beach Boys, were manipulated by record companies. The biography of the Beach Boys actually spends most of the time focusing on how the group was closely controlled ...

$7.49 Sub City Records -- the charitable extension of California's Hopeless Records -- picks up right where it left off in the battle against suicide. Since 2001, Take Action! has been the vehicle through which a wide, ever-changing assortment of punk and indie bands annually team up for a well-stocked compilation and subsequent tour. The goal of Take Action! is to raise awareness about teen suicide, including recognition of warning signs and resources available for prevention, most notably the National Hopeline Network and, most recently, the Youth America Hotline. That said, the fifth installment of this compilation series brings over 40 bands together on two discs that span the indie/punk scene of today, and is therefore a great way to finally hear bands you've heard of but not actually heard. From hardcore to emo pop to indie rock to scrappy punk to -- well, let's stop there before the extreme genre mashing begins. Some exceptions aside, disc one is definitely the more pop-oriented of the two disks. Highlights include Boys Night Out's "Medicating" from their darkly conceptual Trainwreck, the emo bopping of Amber Pacific's "Poetically Pathetic," and the sugarcoated smoothness of "Take Me Away" and "The Only Difference..." courtesy of the Plain White T's and Panic! At the Disco, respectively. The dizzying contributions of the Fall of Troy and Horse the Band also stand strong among their more melodic peers. Disc two is all over the place, and thus the more fun listen; here you'll find gritty punk rock from A Wilhelm Scream and the Riverboat Gamblers, a stylish ...

Over album
$26.79 Ten years after his Top 30 hit "I Will Be in Love With You," Livingston Taylor comes up with an album that has all the brightness of that song and the Top 40 "First Time Love" from 1980. The amazing thing about this artist is that he continually crafts top-notch albums that are highly entertaining, but has not connected with an audience on the same level as his brother, James, Carole King, or other mainstream soft rock artists. A touch of jazz for "Louie" is that magical addition to a folk/adult contemporary album which makes for great crossover potential. ...
