Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark's eponymous debut and its follow-up, ORGANISATION, were pioneering synth-pop albums. However, some of the sonic experiments sounded forced and the band's ideas occasionally seemed to outstrip their abilities. That's definitely not the case here. Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys integrate their electronics gracefully into the format of the pop song, and Malcolm Cooper's live drums do much to keep the album from sounding too machine-made.
The album's centerpiece is the two-part "Joan of Arc"/"Maid of Orleans" suite, OMD's most memorable, as well as prettiest, achievement at that point. The single "Souvenir" is nearly the equal of those two songs, and the eight-minute atmospheric exploration "Sealand" shows the duo's experimental bent remains strong.

The Hot Doggers were actually a studio-only project of Bruce Johnston (who played piano and bass, and sang lead vocals) and Terry Melcher (who produced and added backup vocals), with plenty of assistance from top Los Angeles session musicians. Though Johnston and Melcher each made notable contributions to the '60s L.A. rock scene, Surfin' U.S.A. is nothing more than a quickie surf exploitation album, most of the songs being covers of then-recent hits by the likes of the Beach Boys, the Ventures, and Dick Dale. Though it's professionally executed (and largely instrumental, with only four of the 12 tracks featuring vocals), it would be rather foolish to pay these tracks serious attention when the originals were so much better. This is the first commercially available compilation CD from Canadian songwriter and guitarist, Terry Gomes. For several years now, Terry has written, arranged and performed the music and lyrics on six self-produced demo CDs that he submitted to publishers. The songs were a mix of pop, folk, rock, and country. For many of these, he hired local artists, both male and female, to sing, but he himself played all instrumental parts except for percussion. Now, Terry has gone back to this previous work and chosen songs that were accepted by American publishers, and songs that people have enjoyed. These songs have been professionally remixed and remastered for this, the first of two compilation CDs, GOMESONGS SIDE A, with Side B following later in the year.
