Blues Hit Me album
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, swings like mad. The only fly in the ointment is the fairly primitive production, which often makes Mark Naftalin's keyboards sound like a horde of angry bees, but that's a small criticism in the face of blues playing as passionate and ...
| | Joe Bonamassa Ballad Of John Henry CD (2009)
Blues Hit Me CD music
$13.95 Blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa gets up to his usual tricks on THE BALLAD OF JOHN HENRY, dabbling in a variety of genres, but injecting them all with a serious dose of guitar heroics. Like his musical forefather Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonamassa is both soulful and a shredder, and he brings those qualities to tracks like Tom Waits's "Jockey Full of Bourbon," Ike & Tina Turner's "Funkier Than a Mosquito's Tweeter," and a handful of rock and blues-fused originals. Bonamassa has a progressive sensibility, but that never keeps him, on any of BALLAD's 12 tracks, from rocking like no one's business.

| | Best Of Chuck Berry: 20th Century Masters Of The Millennium Collection CD (1999) Remastered
Blues Hit Me album
$9.35 Recorded between May 21, 1955 and March 26, 1964. Includes liner notes by Joseph F. Laredo.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, No. Hollywood, California).
This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series.
Rock & roll ground zero, which is to say that Chuck Berry may not have invented the music (there being no first rock record any more than there's a first romantic novel) but he definitely invented its grammar (comparisons with D. W. Griffith are thus totally appropriate). A one-CD, 11-song collection clearly doesn't do justice to ...
| | Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan CDs (2002)
Blues Hit Me CD music
$14.89 Recorded between 1980 & 1990. Includes liner notes by Andy Aledort.
Epic's THE ESSENTIAL STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN AND DOUBLE TROUBLE gathers two discs' worth of the late blues guitarist's work, including many live performances and a few tracks with the Vaughan Brothers. The collection presents Vaughan's material in roughly chronological order, from the 1980 live recording "Shake for Me" to 1989's "Life by the Drop." It also touches on most of Vaughan's definitive songs and performances, including "Tightrope," "Wall of Denial," "Couldn't Stand the Weather," and "Cold Shot," and live versions of "The Sky Is Crying," "Superstition," and "Rude Mood/Hide Away." Though this album doesn't offer anything that hasn't already been released in some form or another, it does go into slightly more depth than several of the other Stevie Ray Vaughan retrospectives by presenting both his greatest studio hits and some of his best live work. [This compilation was also released as a three-disc set.]
Like a comet streaking across the sky, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan's time here was snuffed out far too quickly. Although other posthumous compilations have honored his legacy, including a pair of GREATEST HITS collections and a number of live releases, THE ESSENTIAL serves as a lighter alternative to the heftiness of the SRV box set. Vauhan was blessed with a distinct tone and a versatility on guitar that often found him going from bending strings just short of breaking to lightly playing with the delicacy of a baby's touch, often within the same song. This two-CD set does a fine job of representing the late legend's broad range.
Always generous in crediting his myriad of influences, (Double ...

| | Nancy Lamott Just In Time For Christmas CD (1995)
Blues Hit Me album
$13.25 Nancy LaMott's Just in Time for Christmas is a clever combination of popular holiday favorites and traditional carols, all delivered in her patented style. While Michael Feinstein stands out with his guest appearance on "Baby, It's Cold Outside," LaMott remains the true star, thanks to her subtle, engaging arrangements, all of which make for a truly fine holiday album. ~ Rodney Batdorf
