(8 Customer Reviews)
With 2006's AN ANCIENT MUSE, Loreena McKennitt's first studio album since 1997's THE BOOK OF SECRETS, the Canadian vocalist/multi-instrumentalist reestablishes herself as one of the finest purveyors of atmospheric, globe-spanning music. While the gentle, emotive "Penelope's Song" recalls her contemporary Sarah McLachlan, tracks such as "The Gates of Istanbul" and "Sacred Shabbat" are much more exotic pieces, steeped in a lush Middle-Eastern aesthetic. Fans who waited nearly a decade for this record will not be disappointed.
Personnel: Loreena McKennitt (vocals, various instruments); Brian Hughes (vocals, various instruments); Tim Landers (bass guitar); Tal Bergman (drums, percussion); Hossam Ramzy (percussion).

Loreena McKennitt An Ancient Muse Songs An Ancient Muse Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Quite Simply A Masterpiece!!! Nevermind considering this artist's amazing body of work thus far; this album is astounding. You must give it at least a couple of listens...then to be transported by a musical & lyrical style seldom heard...ever.
I am frankly amazed at this lady's artistic brilliance. Submitted by faust8577 (Lorraine, Que. Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Wonderful....but I have a problem with this latest release from Loreena McKennitt, slight though it is. It's track 2 "The Gates of Istanbul". Loreena, if there is such a crime as self-plagiarism, you're guilty of it. It's basically a slowed down version of "The Mystics Dream" from "The Mask and Mirror" and lovely as the song is, it niggles at me every time I listen to this album. However the rest of the CD is well worth the purchase and the 9 year wait. A celtic-arabesque 'tour-de-force'. For me the highpoint of the CD is the beautifully sung and crafted "The English Ladye and the Knight". It stuns me how Loreena is able to take epic poems from the masters of English literature and effortlessly create them into songs of equal grandeur. As one New Zealand music critic succinctly said of Loreenas album "The Visit", she really is "Enya.....with balls!" Excellent Another fantastic CD by Loreena. Every song is wonderfully spiritual. Just wish she'd done it sooner - can never get enough of her music and style. Submitted by lunaillum (Downers Grove, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 2 found this helpful.
Classic Loreena Between Ancient Muse and Parallel Dreams, my drive to and from work slips by effortlessly. Welcome back Loreena. You've been away too long. Submitted by g.wise (Batesville, IN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 2 found this helpful.

An Ancient Muse album
$15.95 Since the 1980s Kate Bush has shouldered the unhappy burden of having to live up to her own brilliance: albums like THE DREAMING and HOUNDS OF LOVE set a high watermark for shimmering, adventurous, off-kilter pop. In the 12 years that transpired between the releases of 1993's THE RED SHOES and 2005's AERIAL, expectations ran high that Bush had something monumental in store. AERIAL does not necessarily meet those expectations, but that is not to imply that it's a lackluster release either.
A double-disc set that encompasses a collection of songs about domesticity (the first disc, A SEA OF HONEY) and a conceptual suite that details the passing of a day (the second disc, A SKY OF HONEY), AERIAL is ambitious, ...
| | David Gilmour On An Island CD (2006)
An Ancient Muse CD music
$9.59 The men of Pink Floyd have always taken their time, turning out stately epics at a less than hectic clip. Accordingly, 22 years separate ON AN ISLAND from ABOUT FACE, the previous solo album by Floyd axeman/singer David Gilmour. On the latter, Gilmour was still trying to distance his own sound from Floyd's, but with that band mostly a memory in 2006, he was free to honor its legacy, much as Paul McCartney's later albums acknowledged the Beatles' work.
The template for ON AN ISLAND seems to be tracks like "Breathe" from DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. The mood is an overwhelmingly mellow, spacious one, with Gilmour's trademark double-tracked vocals and plangent, liquid guitar tones flowing gracefully across almost exclusively slow-to-mid-tempo arrangements. But ...

An Ancient Muse music CDs
$15.99 Although grounded in Celtic mysticism, Loreena McKennitt ranges beyond her roots in THE MASK AND THE MIRROR, searching for the confluence of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic cultures. As its title suggests, "The Mystic's Dream," which opens the album, is a highly visual piece that moves from Gregorian monasteries to Moorish markets, employing tabla, oud, and Uilleann pipes.
In "The Dark Night of the Soul," McKennitt sets her voice to a 15th century ...

$23.05 During their pledge drive in March of 2007, PBS Great Performances aired a magnificent special concert performance by Loreena McKennitt entitled Nights from the Alhambra. This set includes the concert in its entirety on DVD along with the audio for the complete program on 2 CDs. An enchanting musical performance, set beneath the stars in the breathtaking Moorish heart of medieval Spain. Captured in concert in September 2006, McKennitt leads viewers through the multi-textured landscapes of her catalog, from traditional Celtic ballads to literary narratives and highlights from her latest recording, An Ancient Muse. The DVD was filmed in rich HDTV.
Canadian singer/harpist Lorenna McKennitt has been typecast as a performer of soothing music, but she is really much more. True, ...
