Dvorak: Requiem DVD Arthaus Musik presents a historical recording and an outstanding performance of this choral masterpiece conducted by Václav Neumann - for the first time on DVD.
Dvorák had a close affinity with church music from his earliest days. At the age of 16 he transferred to the 'Prague Organ School', where he received a thorough grounding in church music. His first job as organist at St. Adalbert's Church in Prague provided the young composer and his wife with much-needed financial security. During this period, most of his output consisted of church music, and as a practising Catholic he was keen to revive the moribund Bohemian tradition in this field.
However, as it turned out, his major religious works in addition to the Requiem - the 149th Psalm, Te Deum and Stabat Mater - were not written for church performance but rather for the concert hall. With his Requiem, there is no doubt that Dvorák created the sort of major choral work that his English friends had been hoping for.

Dvorak: Requiem film
$20.15 Ingmar Bergman has stated that THE MAGIC FLUTE had long since been an inspiration to him by the time he directed this movie version of an actual staging of Mozart's opera. In Emanuel Schikaneder's libretto--performed here in Swedish instead of German--Prince Tamino (Josef Köstlinger) is sent by the mysterious and powerful Queen of the Night (Birgit Nordin) to rescue her daughter, Pamina (Irma Urrila), from the sorcerer Sarastro (Ulrik Cold), who has kidnapped the girl. Tamino is aided on his mission by the bird catcher Papageno (Håkan Hagegård), an endearing buffoon (and arguably the opera's most popular character) who wants nothing more than to find himself a loving wife. The director presents a shortened version of the story, enhanced with a Freudian plot element (of sorts), while also giving the piece a slight overhaul for a more modern, less politically questionable feel. Bergman shows the goings-on onstage, often zooming in for close-ups of the performers' interaction with one another, interspersed with shots of individual faces in the audience. The actors were mostly chosen for their appearance and stage presence rather than their vocal prowess, though Hagegård has been singled ...

$18.39 LONDON: When his former girlfriend leaves for New York City to live with her new boyfriend, Syd (Chris Evans) decides to rudely interrupt her going-away party by turning up with a small mountain of cocaine and his drug dealer in tow. Most of the movie takes place in the bathroom at the party--where Syd entertains the guests and shares his drug stash with them. LONDON is a stark look at the effect love can have on a man. But there are a few twists and turns in store as the movie lurches toward a surprising conclusion.
SPUN: Ross (Jason Schwartzman) is an addict badly in need of some speed. He pays a visit to his dealer, Spider Mike (John Leguizamo), where he encounters fellow "tweakers" Nikki (Brittany Murphy), a stripper named Frisbee (Patrick Fugit), a metalhead, and Cookie (Mena Suvari), Mike's girlfriend. But the trip turns into an odyssey when Mike can't find his stash. Nikki tells Ross that her boyfriend, a crazed cowboy known as the Cook (Mickey Rourke), can supply whatever he needs. The two of them visit the Cook at his motel lab, and Ross quickly gets his fix. Ross, however, is put into service as The Cook's errand boy and chauffeur, with only brief periods of freedom to check up on the stripper girlfriend he left tied to his bed back at his apartment. Ross's three days without sleep reach a feverish head when it becomes evident that two cops (Peter Stormare and Alexis Arquette) have raided Spider Mike's pad in search of the Cook.
This relentlessly crude and graphic feature from Swedish music video director Jonas Ackerlund is not for the faint-of-heart. Lightening-fast edits, sexually explicit animation, Farrelly-Brothers-level rudeness, and a pervasive sense of nihilism swirl together to create a morally empty Los Angeles of seedy abodes and cinder block strip malls ...
