Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto, Etc / Julia Fischer, Et Al Classical Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Not Much More to Add!!! Ms. Fischer plays beautifully, skillfully, and with great art and interpretation. Her violin gives a throaty warm sound like your loved-one purring in your ear...great to hear! The other reviewers have already said all that I can think to say, so I won't. Submitted by poppynogood (Iowa City, IA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Oh, Wow! It has been said elsewhere that Julia Fischer is a profoundly lyrical player. For admirers of the Tchaikovsky concerto, that should be enough for an unqualified recommendation!
But there is more. Her sound, if you ever heard it live in a good hall, is characterized by an unrivaled variety of color, set within a truly golden, not silvery aura. This recording, fortunately, captures that well!
She also "can press the petal to the metal" and without ever forcing anything, never sounding strained or hurried, deliver unparalled excitment.
This reading of the concerto has it all! In the bravura sections there is an urgency, reflected in the excellent accompaniment by the RSO under Yakov Kreizburg that you won't hear elsewhere. As you listen to these passages, remember to breath! In the lovely lyrical passages her violin sings with heart felt passion. You will never hear this music sung elsewhere with such amazing beauty.
Of my some twenty recordings of this concerto collected over a period of fifty years this is far and away the finest!
Then you have the "fillers" which alone would have been worth the price of the disc. Just listen to the "Souvenir from a cherished place" you will see what I mean.
What? You haven't placed your order yet? What ever are you waiting for??? This one really is a "Must Have"! Submitted by zeisels (Colonie NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Have You Heard Julia Fischer Yet? If you haven't heard this astonishingly gifted young musician play, her Tchaikovsky CD is a good place to start. The familiar violin concerto is a virtuoso's showcase, and Fischer delivers in spades, generating plenty of excitement in the fast sections and exquisite tone throughout. Her violin truly sings. Both the concerto and the other pieces get top performances from Yakov Kreizberg and the Russian National Orchestra. The sound is full, rich, and well-balanced. Julia Fischer never ceases to amaze! Violinist, Julia Fischer, and conductor, Yakov Kreizberg, team up again, this time with the Russian National Orchestra, to deliver a performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. It left me breathless and amazed -- a peak performance! Even if you have heard this concerto many times before, you don't want to miss this one. The other selections on this hybrid SACD are musical delights, as well. The excellent recording quality, in either the six- or two-track option, is that for which PentaTone is widely recognized. Never disappointed, I await Fischer's next CD with great anticipation. Submitted by pbredder (Clifton Park, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto, Etc / Julia Fischer, Et Al
$10.39 Originally released on Dyer-Bennet Records (6). Includes liner notes by Richard Dyer-Bennet & Anthony Seeger. Recording information: 1958. Photographer: Clemens Kalischer. Ostensibly this might have been geared toward children, but it's actually for the most part traditional English ballads and American folk songs that were pretty typical of Dyer-Bennet's repertoire. Thus it's a folk album that could be appropriate for either kids (not necessarily real young ones) or adults, sung and performed plainly by Dyer-Bennet on guitar. There are a few selections more suited for children's singing than others, like "The Tailor and the Mouse," a traditional English children's song, "Little Pigs" (with the animal noises common to several children's folk albums, such as those by Pete Seeger), and "The Hole in the Bottom of the Sea." It's dated in its stilted 1950s folk way, but is pleasant, and differentiated from some other similar recordings of the era by the gentle British Isles lilt in Dyer-Bennet's vocals. Could famous British radio DJ John Peel, who changed his name from John Ravenscroft, have gotten the idea from the English fox-hunting song "John Peel," performed here? The album was reissued on CD by Smithsonian Folkways in 2000. ~ Richie Unterberger
