Miles Kane, lead singer of the Britpop band the Rascals joined forces with Arctic Monkeys front man Alex Turner to form the Last Shadow Puppets, a group whose music harks back to the keenly melodic symphonic pop of the 1960s. Kane and Turner cite early Bowie and Scott Walker among the influences for the Puppets, and those influences are prevalent, but one can hear even stronger traces of the Zombies and the Kinks.
The group's full-length debut, THE AGE OF THE UNDERSTATEMENT, marries a `60s Britpop aesthetic to lush atmospherics and arrangements, the latter partly thanks to the London Metropolitan Orchestra and string arranger Owen Pallette. The title track, "Calm Like You," and "Standing Next to Me" are highlights, but the whole of this evocative, immediately likeable album merits repeated listens.
Following on from the release of lead single ‘Harvest (Within You)’, Clinc unleash their latest album ‘Visitations’. A unique and distinctive band who gather the wild, arcane and oddball and then combine them to create something always fresh, but strangely similar. The album was recorded in the band’s studio in the more godly climbs of Liverpool, produced by the band and mixed by old friend Gareth Jones, who worked with them on the seminal ‘Internal Wrangler’.

Arranger: Owen Pallett.Rolling Stone (p.67) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "While reverb-swathed acoustic guitars churn in minor keys against a backdrop of swooning strings, Turner croons midnight-of-the-soul confessions..." Entertainment Weekly (p.65) - "Their debut boasts galloping rhythms and vibrato guitars...and lovely orchestrations that call to mind pop-melodrama king Scott Walker." Q (Magazine) (p.125) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[E]xcellence is everywhere. On the whole, THE AGE OF THE UNDERSTATEMENT seems to be located in a twilit cityscape, awash with romantic disaster..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's a sumptuous record of drama and escape, mystery and romance. The two co-frontman sing in harmony over great swathes of velvet strings..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.73) - Ranked #2 in Mojo's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2008" -- "[T]he songs were lifted above pastiche, to plant bittersweet 21st century tales onto sweeping symphonic canvases." Clash (magazine) (p.62) - Ranked #40 in Clash's "The 40 Best Albums of 2008" -- "Grandly dramatic, warm, romantic and funny, THE AGE OF UNDERSTATEMENT is hopefully the first of many albums from the Puppets." Age Of The Understatement album
$10.69 For their sophomore outing, AN END HAS A START, the U.K. indie-rock act Editors present another set of brooding, post-punk-inspired songs. While sonic similarities to Interpol remain undeniable, particularly in the dry vocal delivery of singer/guitarist Tom Smith, the Birmingham-based ensemble actually leans more towards the expansive sound of Bloc Party's second record, A WEEKEND IN THE CITY, here--not surprising since both albums share in-demand producer Jacknife Lee.
Given Lee's knack for pristine, guitar-heavy arrangements, Editors are able to cut loose with a grand aesthetic that is best embodied by the bold opening track, "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors," which takes cues from heralded shoegazer heroes Ride in its reverbed six-string squalls. Though Editors continue to wear their ...

Age Of The Understatement CD music
$10.69 Initially issued in October 2007 with little prior notice, Radiohead's seventh full-length studio outing, IN RAINBOWS, took not only fans but the entire music industry by surprise. | | Vampire Weekend CD (2008)
Age Of The Understatement songs
$12.85 Instead of feigning street cred, the band wear their upbringing on their sleeves (literally), with songs about Cape Cod and the polo shirts and deck shoes to match. While Paul Simon's man-child melodies appear all over VAMPIRE WEEKEND, cuts such as the stand-out single "A-Punk" recall another quartet of infamous Africa-plundering, New York preppies: the Talking ...
| | Portishead Third CD (2008)
Age Of The Understatement album
$11.99 More than a decade after its self-titled sophomore outing, the pioneering British electronica ensemble Portishead finally resurfaced with 2008's THIRD, an album that both meets and defies expectations. Although the record features many of the group's aural signatures--most notably that exquisitely dark, cinematic mood and Beth Gibbons's heartbreaking vocals--it presents little in the way of vintage trip-hop, proving that sonic masterminds Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley aren't keen on repeating themselves. "Silence" ...

| | John Lennon Unfinished Music, No. 2: Life With The Lions CD (1969)
Age Of The Understatement music CDs
$14.55 Recorded live at Lady Mitchell Hall, Cambridge, England on March 2, 1969 and at Queen Charlotte Hospital, London, England on November 4 & 25, 1968.
This album, subtitled UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 2, is linked to its predecessor (TWO VIRGINS: UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 1) by name only. Though both offer recordings that found John Lennon happily stepping into the avant-garde world of his paramour, this album departs from the sound collage approach of their debut and instead offers a range of real time recordings. The improvisational 26-minute "Cambridge 1969" is from a live performance and primarily features Yoko Ono's vocals and Lennon's feedback guitar.
Four subsequent pieces (originally comprising side two of the album) were recorded at the Queen Charlotte Hospital in London. Yoko occupied a room there at a critical ...

Age Of The Understatement songs
$13.39 The complete recorded works of nine different artists are included on this well-produced CD. All of the St. Louis-based musicians are quite obscure, although some of the sidemen (most notably Lonnie Johnson, Roosevelt Sykes, Peetie Wheatstraw, and Clifford Hayes) were major names. The music ranges from good-time performances to lowdown blues. Vocalist Jelly Roll Anderson ...
