World Container, the Tragically Hip's eleventh studio LP, finds the Canadian quintet going for their biggest sound to date. Sure, their previous two albums -- 2002's In Violet Light and 2004's In Between Evolution -- found the band experimenting with a larger guitar-driven sound, but not in the same way that World Container reaches for the brightest sound imaginable. This ten-song set comes off with as much fever as the band's live shows, and frontman Gordon Downie finally captures his bona fide rock star appeal as a performer on record! Songs such as "Yer Not the Ocean" and "In View" retain that intoxicating energy that's made the Tragically Hip one of the decade's favorite concert draws. Working with veteran rock producer Bob Rock (Mötley Crüe, Metallica), was one smart move. As he did with Mötley Crüe's Dr. Feelgood album, Rock zeroed in on what makes the Tragically Hip such a vital rock band -- the dual guitar attack of Paul Langlois and Rob Baker, and Downie's clever and poetic state of mind as expressed in his singing -- and drew it in, forcing the Tragically Hip to embrace a sonically richer sound while doing some soul searching for what rock & roll ultimately means to them. The swaggering hard rock leanings of "The Drop-Off" are as classic as anything from Day for Night, while gritty, anthemic moments like "The Kids Don't Get It" and "Luv (sic)" define the band's newfound rawness. "The Lonely End of the Rink," which debuted on Hockey Night in Canada one week prior to the album's Canadian release in October 2006, continues on that path with its U2-like, arena-sized guitar riffs, and Downie, too, has never sounded better. The poetic obliqueness that's carried his lyrics since the Tragically Hip's 1983 inception has obviously made him a Canadian celebrity, but Rock tossed such dramatics aside, encouraging Downie to really rip it all apart and say things in a more straightforward fashion. Getting back to a simple approach might have been a difficult find at first, but World Container does it all without losing sight of what the Tragically Hip have achieved in their 20-plus years in the business, once again solidifying their mark on alternative rock. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

Tragically Hip World Container Songs World Container Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) This one rocks hard! It's taken me a long while to purchase another Hip album - I should have known they would be back with a really great collection of tunes. The guitars are here in full force and there really isn't a dud song amongst all the tracks. Fantastic, thoughtful rock that starts with a kick and flows right to the end of the disc. Too many favorites to list here - and all featuring notable lyrics. Great artwork too!
If you're a fan and haven't got this then do so immediately. If you're new to The Hip, this is a great way to hear their current sound and it will certainly make you go back and discover earlier releases. Submitted by rylee (Adelaide, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Maybe their best album ever?!?!? This CD just may be the best HIP album that they have ever made? It is great from top to bottom after just 5 repeated listenings. Much , much better than their last 3 CDS!
Canadian born BOB ROCK [Metallica] has helped the band re-focus for this steller effort of power pop and real hard rock tunes.
Some keyboards have been added to some of the songs and there is some CLASH/POLICE , influence.
Songs like , IN VIEW , THE LONELY END OF THE RINK , THE KIDS DON'T GET IT , THE DROP-OFF , LUV [SIC] are rock at it's finest.
If you loved the albums , UP TO HERE , ROAD APPLES , FULLY COMPLETELY and PHANTOM POWER , will just love this CD!
Catch them on their 2007 U.S. tour that just started on March 8th , 2007.
You will NOT regret it and/or the buying of this excellent CD! Submitted by regan_flint (Toronto , Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Possibly the best HIP album ever!?!?! After the less than steller CD , In Between Evolution , THE HIP , have bounced back with what may be their best CD ever!?!?!
Canadian born superstar producer , BOB ROCK [Metallica] , was smart enough to leave THE HIP's innovative hard rocking sound intact , but he added some reggie influence and some keyboards to the mix of some of the songs.
This CD is only 42 minutes long , but it has some thing for every one.
It sounds more like the PHANTOM POWER , FULLY COMPLETELY and DAY FOR NIGHT , albums but all of the new musical ideas sound fresh and oridinal.
It also has some of their hardest rocking songs ever.
THE LONELY END OF THE RINK , THE KIDS DON'T GET IT and THE DROP-OFF will blow your socks off.
Some of the excellent pop/rock songs are , YER NOT THE OCEAN , IN VIEW and FLY.
Every track is excellent and it takes about only 5 listens to love the whole CD!
I would rank this CD with other classic HIP albums , such as , UP TO HERE , ROAD APPLES , FULLY COMPLETELY , DAY FOR NIGHT and PHANTOM POWER.
This CD is just that great and if they get proper U.S. airplay should be a huge hit for them.
Even non HIP fans will love this CD!
The CD's packaging will also blow your mind!

| | Tragically Hip In Between Evolution CD (2004)
World Container CD music
$15.35 The first few seconds of In Between Evolution offer a summation in miniature of both why the Tragically Hip are so great and why mainstream success has eluded them, at least in the United States. A distorted guitar chimes out a road-ready riff, soon joined by a taut rhythm section. Then lead singer Gordon Downie shouts out "Here's a glue guy, a performance God," in a pinched howl that sounds like it's ready to veer off-key at any second. That combination of arena rock and indie sensibility is exactly what fans have come to expect from the band; the approach isn't all that different from Pearl Jam's more recent work, except that Downie's lyrics have always been, well, weirder and more literate than the hits that took Pearl Jam to the top of the charts. None of that explains why the Hip still sell out stadiums and sell millions of albums in their native Canada, but In Between Evolution is ...
