With a generally deadpan singer and another guy behind a bank of synthesizers, the Pet Shop Boys just aren't built for live albums, even if the songs are exquisite, there's an orchestra behind them, and some very special guests appear. While the duo can deliver in a live setting, the experience relies heavily on the visual, check the Performance or Somewhere concert videos for proof. Still, for fans, Concrete must exist since it captures the duo's May 2006 appearance at London's Mermaid Theater, an invite-only affair with the BBC Concert Orchestra as backing band. The song selection doesn't read like a greatest-hits compilation because save "It's a Sin" and "West End Girls," everything here was originally recorded with various sized orchestras. Singer Neil Tennant is obviously proud of the high-profile arrangers the duo has worked with in the past and pays respect to them between the music with special mentions for Craig Armstrong, Angelo Badalamenti, and Anne Dudley whose former partner in Art of Noise, Trevor Horn, is musical director here. These little interruptions make the album like a PSB episode of Storytellers as Tennant brings up some points of interest, like how the fascinating Badalamenti arrangement of "Rent" played here is from the Liza Minnelli album that the Boys curated, Results. Other bits from the fringe of the catalog include selections from the duo's The Battleship Potemkin soundtrack and their musical Closer to Heaven, but more interesting is hearing guests Rufus Wainwright and Robbie Williams pull the bittersweet out of "Casanova in Hell" and "Jealousy," respectively. As a one-off show with a "pick-up" band, it isn't surprising that some tracks are executed brilliantly ("The Sodom and Gomorrah Show," "Dreaming of the Queen") while others stumble and fall ("Numb," "It's a Sin") but there's often a good dialog going between the duo and orchestra, and only "It's Alright" sounds exactly like the studio version. While that's probably not enough to keep everyone occupied, fans and fetishists will embrace this curio. ~ David Jeffries

Finishing off a most "fundamental" year (2006) for the duo is this issue of their first official live recording. The 2CD set was recorded on May 8, 2006 at London's Mermaid Theatre for broadcast on the BBC's Radio 2. "Fundamental" album producer Trevor Horn served as musical director and conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra and the show included a host of stellar guests, including Robbie Williams ("Jealousy"), Francis Barber and Rufus Wainwright (who delivered an outstanding performance on "Casanova In Hell"). The setlist includes songs from "Fundamental" as well as classics like "Nothing Has Been Proved", "It's A Sin", "Rent", "It's Alright" and more, capping the night with "West End Girls".

Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a ...

There is apparently a musical scene in New York known as "ethno-punk-cabaret." It includes such bands as the Dresden Dolls, Gogol Bordello, and Barbez, groups whose influences include everything from Lotte Lenya and Kurt Weill to Swans and Balkan folk music. If you didn't know about the scene from which it springs, though, you might simply hear Barbez as a band that appropriates Russian folk song, turn-of-the-century classical music, and post-punk rock & roll with equal facility, and that by doing so manages to create a remarkably coherent and refreshingly unironic musical ...

The album features 14 songs, covering a wide range of musical styles that incorporates country, bluegrass, jazz, blues, gospel, folk, Steely Dan, Little Feat and Frank Zappa influences. The diversity of styles isn't very common on record albums today, but is of course familiar to anyone who enjoys listening to various artist compilation albums. Perhaps this album resembles what would be my favourite radio music show.Three songs were recorded at home with me playing all the instruments, six were recorded at home with lots of help from some of my favourite musicians (including Erik Rutjes, Frido ter Beek, Peter Kalisvaart, Chris Barchet, Harriet Middelhoek, Arjen van El and Xandra Zijlstra) and five were recorded live in a recording studio in Amsterdam with a motley collection of musicians (including Dicky Greenwood, Mr. Boogie Woogie, Steve Grams, Danny Krieger, Wouter Kiers, Peter van den Bos, and Inigo Grimbergen) who recorded this batch in a single afternoon session without any rehearsal. The result is an album that isn't intended to be a showcase of technical perfection, but rather a document of musicians having a good time in their living room.Who am I? Well, I'm a Dutch singer/songwriter, bass player, pedal steel guitarist, and music teacher. I spent my childhood in many different countries including Syria, India, Algeria, Zambia, and the USA. My early influences were the albums in my parents' collection: Chopin, Schubert, Nina Simone, Gerry Mulligan, Nat King Cole, Bob Dylan, The Beatles - a small but eclectic collection. Started playing the guitar at age 6. When living in Brookings, South Dakota, I was encouraged to play acoustic bass in the string orchestra and electric bass with the jazz band and the high school chorus, and thus discovered my first love: the BASS. I joined various bands, and started writing my first original songs. After obtaining my diploma at the Conservatory of Hilversum in 1989, I joined, on bass, Jaap Dekker's Jazz & Boogie Set (from 1989 - present), Capelino (from 1993 - present), Mr. Boogie Woogie & The Firesweep Bluesband (1994-2002), Dicky Greenwood Band (1995 - present), and more recently Anke Angel, Lisa Otey Trio, Wouter Kiers Trio, and Dirk Jan Vennik, and occasionally, as a freelance bassist, Rob Agerbeek, Jean-Pierre Bertrand, Julien Brunetaud, Oene van Geel, Grams & Krieger, Kiers & De Vries, Philip Kroonenberg, Lils Mackintosh, Mazzeltov, Pee Bee & The Night Train, Pinetop Perkins, Frans Poptie, Sake, Tom Salisbury, Martijn Schok, Jeroen Sweers, Andre Valkering, Boris Vanderlek, Diane Van Deurzen, Dana Winner and many others. In addition to my gigs as a bass player, I play pedal steel with The Lowlanders, Karen Neumann, Two In A Room, and studio sessions for Spinvis and others.I've contributed to many albums (some of them available at CD Baby - check out the pages ...
