| | Kris Drever Black Water CD Kris Drever Discography of CDs
Scottish folk singer Kris Drever's debut album combines traditional British and Celtic folk influences and more contemporary rock elements. Very much in the style of the post-Fairport Convention school of folk-rock from the United Kingdom (a tradition that includes Drever's father, Ivan Drever of the cult heroes Wolfstone), BLACK WATER is a solid, entertaining listen, highlighted by Drever's warm, expressive vocals and simple, elegant guitar work, backed by a small electric band including fiddle and accordion.
A polished and well crafted gem of a debut album from the Scot folkie, produced by John McCusker (Teenage Fanclub, Kate Rusby). Featuring a star studded cast of many of the UK's leading folk musicians: Eddie Reader, Kate Rusby, Roddy Woomble (Idlewild), Donald Shaw, Ewen Vernal, Andy Cutting And Ian Carr.Q (p.111) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "A strong natural singer and top-notch guitarist, BLACK WATER is a canny mix of traditional material and contemporary 'message' songs..." Dirty Linen (p.79) - "It is an excellent debut with promise for the future. Notable tracks include 'Harvest Gypsies,' Braw Sailin' on the sea,' and 'Navigator.'" Dirty Linen (p.55) - "Drever has a distinctively rich voice....['Green Grows The Laurel'] is given a fine new shine because of Drever's lovely vocals and arrangement." Mojo (Publisher) (p.115) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The album's full of gentle, liquid playing....You don't have to be down with the latest in roots manoeuvres to acknowledge that Kris Drever is a serious talent." | | Jay-Z The Blueprint 3 CD (2009)
Black Water CD music
$15.65 On THE BLUEPRINT 3, still unretired Jay-Z announces "the only rapper to rewrite history without a pen." It's a standard Jigga boast, but the Brooklyn icon has earned the bragging by backing it up, particularly on his gold-label, top-shelf BLUEPRINT series. Ever-ready for battle, Jay-Z takes on autotune, crossover radio, and many other hip-hop concerns with the gloriously jagged rap elan for which he's become known.
When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001's The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations. The first volume saw Jay-Z as vital as he'd ever been, storming back to the hardcore after a few years of commercial success. THE BLUEPRINT 2 took a different tack, with guest shots to compliment his sinuous flows. BLUEPRINT 3 is somewhere between the two, closer to the vitality and energy of the original but not without the crossover bids and guest features of the latter. Kanye West is in the producer's chair for seven tracks, and it's clear he was reaching for the same energy level as the original. "What We Talkin' About" begins the album with a wave of surging, oppressive synth, while Jay-Z enumerates (with an intriguing lack of detail) what he's said and what's been said about him, ending with a nod not to the past but the future (and Barack Obama). There's plenty more ...

| | Toni Braxton Snowflakes CD (2001)
Black Water CD music
$6.25 The sultry-voiced chanteuse's entry in the Yuletide release stakes should prove a winner with her fans. Anachronistically jazzy arrangements of songs such as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Christmas Time is Here" (yes, the PEANUTS song) vie with more contemporary titles like "Christmas in Jamaica" and the sexy "Santa Please." The latter ...

Black Water CD music
$15.19 Mammothly influential producer and the Godfather of G-Funk, producer/rapper Dr. Dre's best work was on the Death Row label. It was there where he released the West Coast's greatest album, The Chronic, and where he turned a scrappy unknown named Snoop Doggy Dogg into one of the biggest hip-hop stars ever. You just can't call yourself a serious rap fan unless there's a copy of both The Chronic and Snoop's Doggystyle in your collection, and if there ...

| | Revolutionary Ensemble Psyche CD (1975)
Black Water album
$11.69 The Revolutionary Ensemble were an extraordinary trio who unfortunately has a very limited discography, and what they did record is rather difficult to find. The Psyche is a case in point, released in 1975 on the small, self-produced RE: Records label and, as of 2002, unavailable on disc. It's a superb performance, however, consisting of three compositions, one by each group member, and can serve as a microcosm of what the band was about. Drummer Jerome Cooper was always the most concerned with extended and complex compositions. His lengthy "Invasion," which occupies side one of the album, is an episodic suite where the solos are integral to the piece's structure, not simply improvisations spun off of riffs. Even with the "limited" palette of violin, bass, and percussion (plus the composer on piano for a bit), Cooper is able to conjure forth a unique and fascinating sound world allowing both a clear exposition of his ideas as well as offering the personalities of the musicians to shine. Leroy Jenkins, the most soulful and bluesy of avant-garde jazz violinists, takes special advantage here in his extremely lovely solo feature. Sirone's ...
