| | To Live & Shave In L A Noon And Eternity CD To Live & Shave In L A Discography of CDs
To Live & Shave in L.A., after a lengthy hiatus preceded by some fractious competing versions of the band, who reconvened in 2003 with the original nucleus of leader and theorist Tom L. Smith and his majordomo Frank "Rat Bastard" Falestra now joined by former member Ben Wolcott, longtime noise-rock gadfly Don Fleming, Sightings guitarist Mark Morgan and, inexplicably, goofy pop-metal star and MTV host Andrew W.K. ("Party Hard"). Produced by Fleming and W.K. at Lee Ranaldo's Echo Canyon studio with guest appearances by Ranaldo and bandmate Thurston Moore, Noon and Eternity is a slightly more controlled version of Smith and Falestra's edge-of-chaos aesthetic. Only the final "Mother over Silverpoint," the closest to a conventional "song," comes in under the ten-minute mark, and the four-track album breaks an hour in playing time, with each lengthy piece passing through a variety of moods and sounds. The highlight is the hypnotic "Early 1880s," which mixes found-sound tapes and hammer-on-strings drones for a sound somewhere between Glenn Branca and early Krautrock. ~ Stewart Mason

Noon And Eternity album
$13.89 Philip Jeck and Janek Schaefer have shared the same stage -- with and without performing together -- numerous times as part of avant-garde music events, namely the Martin Tétreault-curated turntablist ensemble that toured England in the early 2000s. Songs for Europe is their first full-length collaboration and certainly deserves more than a footnote in their respective discographies. In fact, this album is one of Jeck's best efforts since Vinyl Coda IV, as it eschews facile ambient textures in favor of a harsher discourse, and Schaefer's most "accessible" album in recent times, after a string of very strong yet much more demanding releases (Cold Storage and Black Immure, in particular). The main theme, found in the album title, the artwork, and most of all in the sound sources, is Turkey. Jeck and Schaefer are spinning and sampling a wide range of Turkish (and possibly Greek) music, from classical to rock, by way of traditional folk. The crackling of old vinyl is omnipresent, especially at the beginning and end of ...

Noon And Eternity CD music
$15.29 Ophir "Kutiman" Kutiel is a 25-year-old multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer based in Tel Aviv. When a friend introduced him to the sounds of 1960s funk and Afro-beat, he was immediately entranced, and this album was the eventual result. It shows clearly that he's been listening hard to the records of his heroes -- Fela Kuti, James Brown, Sly Stone -- and that he's learned a lot from them. It also shows his impressive instrumental chops. What the album lacks is a critical mass of interesting songs, or even grooves that are substantial enough to sustain a full song's length. "Bango Fields" starts off fairly strong, but never develops enough to be worth listening ...

Noon And Eternity CD music
$12.19 It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which isn't necessarily such a bad thing: the austerity is genuine, not affected, and the cerebral nature of the album is fascinating, albeit mildly so, as this is as sleepy as it is thoughtful. And it's that thoughtfulness that does distinguish IF ON A WINTER NIGHT...; no other Christmas album exists in the head like this. It's a holiday album for people who have never wanted to hear a holiday album, let alone own one.
