The deluxe edition of the chart-topping BEAUTIFUL LIE contains a DVD with music videos, making-of's, and highlights from various MTV appearances.
When rock bands include a Hollywood actor among their ranks, more often than not the results are mediocre vanity projects. However, 30 Seconds to Mars proves to be an exception to this rule, with Jared Leto (renowned for roles in FIGHT CLUB and LORD OF WAR) capably fronting this intense pop-metal outfit. On the group's second album, A BEAUTIFUL LIE, Leto is a remarkably versatile vocalist and the band's sole songwriter, leading the quartet through potent tracks that recall A Perfect Circle and Deftones. For those who like emotive, high-energy alt-metal, 30 Seconds to Mars is sure to strike a chord, regardless of its famous connections.

Great CD/DVD It's a great buy for the price. I already have 2 copies of A Beauiful Lie, so I mainly go this for "The Kill (rebirth)" and of course the DVD. I wish the DVD had more content on it, but still definately a great product! Submitted by t2xw2002 (Hatboro, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

What can I say? Awesome As the headline. What can I say? I heard the band before I knew it was Jared, and that it was him made me like it even more. I mean, like the others already have said, an actor/ess that becomes a singer usually doesn't succeed. Jared and this guys will. They are just awesome! Buy this cd now! $20.89 Martin's relationship to the band gives him a unique perspective (not to mention access to a vast catalogue of multi-track tapes), which results in a shape-shifting overview that encompasses demo recordings, instrumental passages, and snippets from some of the best-loved Beatles tunes. Beatles fanatics will be in seventh heaven playing "name that reference" on this sonic carpet ride, but LOVE also provides something of an "overture" to the Beatles' oeuvre. The SPECIAL EDITION comes with a bonus audio-only DVD featuring the album in various stereo mixes.

| | Joe Jackson I'm The Man CD (1979) Remastered
Beautiful Lie music CDs
$6.49 Digitally remastered by Erick Labson at Universal Mastering Studios-West,
Jackson wasted little time following up his successful '79 debut. I'M THE MAN was released later that same year. Perhaps consequently, the overall sonic approach is much the same. Unerringly tuneful pop-rock (once upon a time they called it "New Wave") delivered with plenty of British attitude over spare but energetic guitar-bass-drums backing. As a songwriter, Jackson developed a bit more here. Musically, "Amateur Hour" and the transcendent "It's Different For Girls" cover new balladic ground. The lyrics are more penetrating as well; "Geraldine and John" is a biting portrait of two adulterous lovers, and confusion over the battle of the sexes has never been so eloquently expressed as in the aforementioned "It's Different For Girls." I'M THE MAN is fully as arresting as--and ultimately even more engrossing than--LOOK SHARP.
Despite Joe Jackson's anxious demeanor and shaky pop/rock presence, I'm the Man holds together quite well as his second attempt. Reaching number 12 in the U.K. and a respectable number 22 in the U.S., the album managed to net him a number five hit in his homeland with the insightful "It's Different for Girls," which revealed Jackson's adeptness at philosophizing and his perception of examining the sexes, a trait that would follow him throughout his career. While this song represents his skill at crafting an effective ballad, the frantic "I'm the Man" showcases Jackson at his most frenzied, as a freight train's worth of lyrics pile haphazardly into one another alongside a wonderfully hysterical rhythm. Not only does the track show off Jackson's free-range ability, but his sense of humor arises once again, following in the footsteps of Look Sharp!'s "Is She Really Going Out With Him." Jackson's new wave tendencies are toned down for I'm the Man, but that doesn't restrain his ...

| | Quietdrive When All That's Left Is You CD (2006)
Beautiful Lie music CDs
$9.85 On their 2006 debut When All That's Left Is You, Minneapolis quintet Quietdrive mixes up elements from the last three decades of alt rock. There's more than a hint of '80s new wave and college rock, most prominently on a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," but also in their cavernous drums, old-school synths, and pulsating guitar rhythms, plus the occasional sugary singalong chorus. But their basic style is grounded in '90s alt rock, in its surging guitar rock explorations of angst, anthemic choruses, and flourishes of blink-182-styled punk-pop. But, at its heart, When All That's Left Is You is a thoroughly modern rock record -- pretty and processed, neurotic and narcissistic, clean, crisp, and professional -- so it plays smoothly, but doesn't leave much of a lasting impression. Although they can pull off the occasional naggingly catchy chorus -- particularly on the opening triptych of "Rise from the Ashes," "Get Up," and "Take a Drink" -- Quietdrive doesn't have a distinctive spin on modern rock; in fact, for all of lead singer/songwriter Kevin Truckenmiller's emo navel-gazing, he does seem more comfortable with following the pack, or as he says on "Take a Drink" "I never wanna be part of the herd/I guess I was in case you haven't heard/Maybe you can tell that I can't stand/The way I want to be the included." That sentiment sums up the sound and emotion of Quietdrive's debut; for a bunch of self-centered and self-obsessed songs, it sure sounds like everything else out there. Not markedly worse or better, mind you -- just more of the same. And ...
