Too Much Pressure
Selecter Too Much Pressure CD  (1980) (Import) Import; Canada

Step
CD $17.99  4.3 stars
At the time of its release, Too Much Pressure was relegated to second-class status behind the debut records by Madness and the Specials. Now it's easy to see that this record was the equal to the Specials record, and (this will be widely disputed) better than the first (and second) Madness records. Pauline Black is the key and she makes songs like "On My Radio" and the title track classic chunks of Caribbean-influenced pop rather than mere stylistic mimicry. Much better than the weak second record, Celebrate the Bullet, or the 1989 anthology, Selected Selecter Selections. ~ John Dougan Unfortunately, this is not a reissue of Selecter's classic debut album, but instead a collection of some of that album's cuts along with some live recordings. ~ Joslyn Layne First time on CD for this legendary album, originally issued in 1980 at the very peak of the Two Tone label's U.K. fame, and destined for immediate chart success -- the album reached number five in Britain -- a stream of singles kept the group in the Top 30 all year and, just for a moment, Selecter seemed bound for the same pantheon of greatness as had already accepted Madness and the Specials. That never happened -- one disappointing album later, and Selecter was no more. But Too Much Pressure remains a sparkling jewel in the ska revival crown, roaring in on the (eerily self-fulfilling) "Three Minute Hero," then skipping through both band originals and a handful of well-chosen covers -- the version of Justin Hinds' "Carry Go Bring Come" stands alongside any of the Specials' better-known resurrections, while Selecter's own "Missing Words" is one of those rare songs that simply defies you to categorize it, no matter what musical form it takes. Yes, it's ska. But it's so much more than that. Three bonus tracks include "The Selecter," the instrumental B-side to the first-ever Two Tone label single (the Specials' "Gangsters"), and the contagiously keening "On My Radio"; a tightly wound single version of the album's "Too Much Pressure" completes the package and, again, reminds us just how close Selecter came to touching true glory. And, no matter what heinous musical crimes the re-formed band may have committed in the years since then, Too Much Pressure insists that they be forgiven everything. ~ Dave Thompson First ...
Hooks And Crutches
Rally Boy Hooks And Crutches CD  (2001)

Step
CD $7.29
Anthemic, consice and ultimately catchy pop songs in the always lovely context of rock. Astouding vocal harmonies. Familiar at once without being derivative.Rally Boy's music points towards its influences openly; thankfully, it avoids slavish imitation -- mostly. "Undrest" features a bridge that Paul McCartney would sell his farm for. "Stuck" sounds suspiciously like something Paul Weller would write, were he feeling upbeat, replete with crisp, clean soloing. Unfortunately, it seems to end just as a reasonable head of steam is developed -- a problem that also occurs elsewhere on the disc. Despite the addition of some crazy clarinet work (and garbage-can percussion), "Low E" sometimes seems a little too musically indecisive to save it from the "could've been a Weezer track" file. Likewise, "Slang Tips" sounds like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in a clean pair of pants, jamming with the Clash, though with no clear sense of purpose. On the plus side, "The Check-Out" gives a nod to Yo La Tengo in the verse, but pulls clear just in time for a marvelously fuzzy chorus that inexplicably brings to mind images of people dancing the twist. This is a good thing, considering the song's subject-matter seems to be firmly in the domain of the indie-boy-who-just-lost-his-girl whine. "Submarine", the disc's closer (discounting a five-second track called "Ping", which does exactly what you'd expect) is this endeavor's saving grace -- a Pixies-esque tune that breaks into a tropicana-styled cheesefest. It's the perfect end to an album that proves that being dumped ain't no excuse for sounding miserable. More, please. There's something about bare bones pop that's just so goddamn ridiculous, you can't help but love it. You know the kind I'm talking about, right? It's the strained vocals which stand out there all alone, the simple guitar that accompany them, the lyrics which are inevitably derived from someone's college thesis or personal manifesto, or something. Rally Boy wears their heart on their sleeve on this album, and you can tell. At times, it's a little schizophrenic--track five ("Slang Tips") sounds WAY punk compared to track one ("Undrest," which totally smacks of Weezer). But when RB is really focused, it's pure poppy indulgence, with a range of melodies that just kind of fall into one another before hitting the uniform chorus. You'll want more of this feeling, and you'll love the rest of the CD for the moments when it shows up again.
