| | Wendy & Lisa CD Wendy & Lisa Discography of CDs
Released in late 1987, Wendy and Lisa was the debut by Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman after they left Prince's much loved band, the Revolution. Although Sign o' the Times was justifiably heralded as a masterpiece, Melvoin and Coleman both possessed an energy and prowess that some felt was missing from that effort and those that followed. Luckily, a good part of those charms show up on this album. The deceptively simple "Honeymoon Express" has a propulsive energy mixed with effortless and recondite vocals, especially on the chorus. Given the pair's work with Prince, it's no surprise that the best songs here are conflicted and thought-provoking. Melvoin's off-centered and oddly sensual vocals never fail to impress, as does Coleman's keyboard shading and composing. The insinuating "Everything but You" is one of the more true-to-life and honest love songs you're likely to hear. The best track, "Stay," is suitably dark and oddly reassuring, and made this an instant classic. Everything's not great here. "Chance to Grow" and the instrumental "White" both meander. Produced by Coleman, Melvoin, and Revolution drummer Bobby Z, Wendy and Lisa lasted well beyond its release date and is one fulfilling effort. ~ Jason Elias

Wendy & Lisa album
$10.59 One of Gil Scott-Heron's finest 1970s albums, WINTER IN AMERICA finds the ever-provocative vocalist/poet playing off the surprisingly gentle piano arrangements of Brian Jackson. Whereas other records (particularly SMALL TALK AT 125th AND LENOX) focus more on Scott-Heron's spoken-word missives, WINTER highlights the influential African-American performer's abilities as a singer, particularly on the soulful "Back Home" and the smooth, lyrically pointed title track, which superficially evokes a contemporaneous Barry White tune.
While the first part of WINTER IN AMERICA consists of studio sessions, the final four numbers feature Scott-Heron playing live in Washington, D.C., with the concert recordings easily on a par with the more polished earlier tracks, as exemplified by his stirring medley of "The Bottle," a funky cautionary tale, and the percussive, chanted "Guan Guanco." Second only to PIECES OF A MAN as an intriguing mix of melody and rhetoric, WINTER IN AMERICA is required listening for anyone interested in Scott-Heron.

| | Maxwell MTV Unplugged CD (1997) (Import) France
Wendy & Lisa CD music
$14.45 "Whenever Whenever Whenever" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
For a brief moment in the mid-90s, Maxwell was his generation's Marvin Gaye. This live set, probably his finest moment on wax, features the bonus track "'Til The Cops Come Knockin'," as well as "The Lady Suite," "Gotta Get Closer," and five more.
Riding the wave of young turks delving into old-school soul that includes D'Angelo, Eryka Badu and Adriana Evans, Maxwell's URBAN HANG SUITE heralded the arrival of a balladeer who combined Al Green's seductiveness with Prince's sensuality. MTV UNPLUGGED shows off the live side of this young free spirit whose musical roots reach through the Quiet Storm into some pretty unlikely places. Throughout this EP, the arrangements are lush, the horns caress every groove and Maxwell's creamy falsetto ducks and feints through his own "Whenever Wherever Whatever" and "The Lady Suite." He also takes time to give props to Kate Bush with a crystalline reading of "This Woman's Work." Showing off a knack for the unorthodox, Maxwell closes out the festivities with a completely transformed cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" that moves from a jazz/funk workout to a gospel feel.
International version of the urban artist's 1997 companion to his acclaimed MTV appearance with one additional track, 'Till The Cops Come Knockin'. Also features his beautiful rendition of Kate Bush's 'This Woman's Work' which is exclusive to this release. Of the other tracks, it features the singles, 'Sumthin' Sumthin', 'Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)' & ...
| | George Duke 1976 Solo Keyboard Album CD (1976)
Wendy & Lisa music CDs
$10.49 Not very many of George Duke's recordings are of interest to jazz listeners, since he has spent much of his career as either a funk keyboardist or a pop producer. Despite the title, this album is not a very spontaneous set, for Duke is heard playing piano, various keyboards, guitar, drums, and organ, most of it overdubbed. The seven selections (which include "Mr. McFreeze," "Spock Gets Funky," and "Vulcan Mind Probe") do have their moments of interest, with some good grooves and melodies, and George Duke has long been proud of this particular effort. [Wounded Bird released the album on CD in 2004.] ~ Scott Yanow
George Duke is regarded as one of the greatest jazz keyboard players of all time. Almost all of his albums have been issued on CD, the one blatant exception is his work for MPS Records in the mid-70's. He put out three albums for MPS. In 1982 George himself hand selected what he considered to be the best tracks from those three albums and issued ...

| | Javon Jackson Now CD (2006)
Wendy & Lisa album
$13.69 Tenor-saxophonist Javon Jackson's Now is a bit surprising, being a modern soul-jazz set rather than hard bop, with Jackson (who normally hints strongly at Joe Henderson) sounding close at times to Grover Washington, Jr. Actually, other than two throwaway R&B vocal tracks, the music is quite rewarding. While some of the structures are simple, Jackson takes plenty of creative soulful solos and the music always grooves. Happily "Richard's R.A.P." is not a rap piece but a catchy vamp. Organist Dr. Lonnie Smith and guitarist ...
| | Wendy & Lisa Fruit At The Bottom CD (1989)
Wendy & Lisa CD music
$10.49 Wendy & Lisa fell victim to the sophomore jinx on the follow-up to their promising self-titled debut. On this album, the duo decided to incorporate dance-club beats and synthesizers into their music. The results were mixed. Though the album sounds more lively and slick than the debut, Wendy & Lisa came up short in the songwriting department. None of the album's ten tracks are anywhere near as memorable as the debut's "Waterfalls." The beats also sometimes hamper whatever emotional depth Wendy & Lisa are attempting to convey, especially on "Someday I," which has a strangely upbeat sound for a song with rather downbeat lyrics. The title cut is similarly ill-conceived, with a dance club arrangement that is meant to be exuberant, but instead comes ...

Wendy & Lisa songs
$10.09 Sometimes hypnotic and sometimes charming, this enjoyable addition to the Air Mail Music series was recorded in various parts of Burma/Myanmar and spotlights some of the traditional styles of that country. Much of the CD is instrumental, although vocalists are featured on some selections. Regrettably, the liner notes (which are in French and English), don't tell you who any of the various Burmese musicians and singers are -- like other releases in this series, Air Mail Music: Burma doesn't provide any personnel or recording dates. But it does let you know what some of the instruments are; on this album, you'll hear xylophones as well as ...
