| | Ruts In A Rut CD (2000)
Reckless Roots Rockers
$7.09 Also known as In A Can, out of deference to its distinctive packaging, this deeply posthumous set collects together 16 outtakes and alternates covering the first flowering of the Ruts -- truly one of the finest of all Britain's post-punk reggae/Oi! fusionists. The furious "Babylon's Burning," present here in four starkly different versions, is only one of a clutch of period classics in the band's arsenal and In A Rut's biggest failing is its refusal to address the rest. No "Jah Wars," no "West One," and only a perfunctory "Something That I Said."
Instead, In A Rut remains determinedly close to the band's earliest strivings, pulling a handful of songs from their BBC sessions and mixing them with demos drawn from the period leading up to the band's debut album. "In A Rut" itself still sparkles, while the instrumental rendering of its B-side, "H-Eyes," evidences the sheer power of the band's rhythm section. A couple of versions of the anthemic "Blackman's Pinch," too, can only make one mourn the precipitous collapse of the band -- had vocalist Malcolm Owen lived, we might remember the Ruts like we remember the Clash. Instead, In A Rut stands more as a tribute to a band who never truly got out of one. ~ Dave Thompson
The packaging is tremendous. A cigarette-cigar-cough drop (Altoids-like) tin opens to a stack of beautiful color coasters with band photos and superb historical liner notes. Yes! Too bad the music isn't as important as the clump of other Ruts archival releases. It's not a bad thing to open the vaults for a band this phenomenal (and this short lived), and In a Can's compiling of the "In a Rut" era, late-1978/early '79 Ruts (just before they were signed), from two Fair Deal studio sessions, one great Underhill session, and one "Mystery" session, is welcome as always. But these demos really add little to the later, far-better Virgin Records' standards, Peel Session versions, outtakes releases, and live albums. It's just the same thing, only before the band matured into a much tigher, more elastic and explosive unit, and on dodgier recording equipment as befits a struggling new band. Besides, there are some much more exciting, ...
| | Festival In Havana CD (2003)
Reckless Roots Rockers
$12.35 Recorded in Havana, Cuba in 1955. Originally released on Riverside (4005).
In 2003, Milestone/Fantasy announced that it was reissuing Festival in Havana -- an obscure recording that was made in 1955 (before Fidel Castro came to power) and had been out of print for at least 40 years. Those who weren't familiar with the original LP might have expected to hear a Cuban dance orchestra playing son, cha-cha, or mambo; perhaps they might have expected to hear something along the lines of la Sonora Matancera or the bands of Beny Moré, Tito Rodriguez, Machito, or Xavier Cugat. All of those artists were quite popular in the '50s, and all of them were masters of the music that eventually came to be called salsa (an umbrella ...

| | Tommy Boy Presents Hip Hop Roots CD (2005)
Reckless Roots Rockers
$9.69 An entry-level class on breaks that's more like your favorite recess activity, Tommy Boy's Hip Hop Roots is based on some of the most notorious tracks sampled throughout the history of hip-hop. This demonstrates the keen ears required to hear the potential in unlikely sources -- take Billy Squier's "The Big Beat" (Run-D.M.C.'s "Here We Go," U.T.F.O.'s "Roxanne, Roxanne"), first spotted by Afrika Bambaataa, or the Monkees' "Mary, Mary" (Run-D.M.C.'s track of the same name), initially re-contextualized by Rick Rubin. The straight funk and hard soul that formed the backbone of hip-hop is also well represented through the Jimmy ...

| | Rick Sikes Etchings In Stone CD (2003)
Reckless Roots Rockers
$17.69 FROM A FARM BOY TO A ROUGHNECK TO A COWBOY PICKER TO ACONVICT This CD is truly a "Concept" album telling the story of the life and times of an old-time Texas musician. In the 1960's, while playing on Slim Willet's Big State Jamboree, in Abilene, Texas, Rick met Tommy Overstreet who became a life-long friend. Rick had his own weekly TV music show at K-PAR TV in Abilene in 1964. He and his band, The Rhythm Rebels, played all over the State of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and California. He had the privilege and honor of playing with some very successful country music artists, such as Bob Wills, Red Foley, Willie Nelson,Bobby Bare, Sonny James, Stonewall Jackson, Loretta Lynn and Jimmy C. Newman, just to name a few. In 1971, Rick Sikes was arrested and charged with bank robbery He was tried, found guilty and sentenced to 25 years and 50 years to run consecutively and sent to Leavenworth Penitentiary. Being a true rebel,he struggled greatly with being locked up. Through many hours of heart-wrenching agony and soul searching, he made the decision to do his best to make something positive out of a very negative situation. His favorite motto became the words of Teddy Roosevelt:"Always do the best you can with what you have where you are"He formed a band in prison called Rick Sikes and the Survivors. Through his efforts and a song he wrote called "From the Bottle to the Needle", the warden gave him permission to put together a recording studio. As far as is known, it is the only recording studio inside of a Federal prison anywhere. Included on this CD are some of those recordings created in the studio in prison. He was released from prison in 1985 and he married Jan, one week after being released. He put all of his energy, creative abilities and talents towards building a home, raising two young girls, and generally trying to make up for lost time. He did not pick up his guitar or actively pursue any music interests after getting out of prison, for many years. In 1999, his close friend, Roxy Gordon, and others including good friend, SteamTrain Maury "King of the Hobos"(who always told him he had a gift of music and called him Music Man), pushed him to start playing and singing again. Roxy passed away in February of 2000 and Rick appeared on stage for the first time in 30 years at the Memorial for Roxy at Sons of Hermann Hall in ...
