For dedicated fans, Holiday Tradition is a treasure. For many years, Itzhak Perlman has been chronicling traditional music of Israel and Eastern Europe through a series of albums. Many of these discs were heavy on holiday tunes, and each were delightful, filled with heart and spirit -- each was essential listening, since they found Perlman at his most relaxed and joyous. All three albums -- Tradition, In the Fiddler's House, Live in the Fiddler's House -- are packaged together as the box set Holiday Tradition. It's true that many fans will already own these albums and there's no new music to entice fans to repurchase the records, but anyone who doesn't own them would be advised to pick up this set. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Justin Hayward and an orchestra covering songs that he'd admired by other songwriters, this time on a grand scale that makes this record sound both sonically impressive and terribly pretentious. It's debatable whether the pop world needed Richard Harris's rendition of "MacArthur Park," but it definitely didn't need Hayward's even more cloying version 20-odd years later. ~ Bruce Eder
