| | 50 Cent Before I Self-Destruct CDs (2007) With DVD
Soul Jams music CDs
$11.19 Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you leave the room after the macho bruiser "I Got Swag" ("I'm infinitely special/Girl the Lord is gonna bless you/If you do what I tell you to do"), you'll return ...

| | Coolio Gangsta's Paradise CD (1995)
Soul Jams music CDs
$12.05 The single "Gangsta's Paradise" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. The single was also nominated for Record Of The Year.
"Sumpin' New" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance, and GANGSTA'S PARADISE was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Rap Album.
"Be it wrong or right...these are the geto highlites." In that one line lies the genius of Coolio (even if he can't spell "ghetto"). From this disc's first track--a short dialogue that sums up both the violent, inexorable sameness and the strange attraction of ghetto life--to the Grammy-winning title track, Coolio and his crew take an unflinching look at life on the streets of America. The music--sampled from, and made possible by, the likes of Stevie Wonder, the Evasions and Kool And The Gang--stays compelling throughout. Despite his hard-edged stance, Coolio shows a decided preference for summertime cruising grooves, the kind that make you wanna put your arm up on a hot aluminum door strip and watch the underworld go by.
Recorded at Echo Sounds, Los Angeles, California and Studio 56, Hollywood, California.
Engineers: Bob Morse, Mark Nathan, Patrick MacDougall.

| | Mobb Deep Infamous CD (1995)
Soul Jams songs
$8.99 All songs written or co-written by A. Johnson and K. Muchita except "Just Step Prelude" (A. Johnson/T. Perry). Samples include "That's Alright With Me" (Ester Phillips), "Where There Is Love" (as performed by Patrice Rushen), "You Are My Starship" (as performed by Norman Connors) and "I Remember I Made You Cry" (as performed by The Headhunters).
Before their Loud/RCA debut THE INFAMOUS, Mobb Deep's Havoc and Prodigy were introduced to the hip-hop nation on 1993's JUVENILE HELL, portraying their own brand of the "Trife Life." Image and hardships aside, a lot has changed since then, particularly their music which has naturally matured as the pair have grown older, bolder and wiser.
THE INFAMOUS is a rugged ride through the truths and terrors of these two Big Apple outlaws, with cuts like "Right Back At You" and "Cradle To The Grave" stinging the minds of its listeners. This time around Mobb Deep play with the background tracks a little more, having self-produced virtually the entire album. The lead-off single, "Shook Ones Pt. II," blew up tremendously, first in the underground and then on the charts; its killer lyrics and hypnotizing beat pounded a warning into the heads of the masses to stay real. "Survival Of The Fittest" and "Up North Trip" ...
