| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
Everything CD music
$8.85 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary Nite." At the centerpiece is a studio version of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work," a staple of Maxwell's concerts previously showcased on the live 1997 EP UNPLUGGED. ...

| | Meters Struttin' CD (1970)
Everything music CDs
$11.65 When the Meters went into Cosimo Matassa's New Orleans studio in 1970 to cut STRUTTIN, the band already had two albums under its belt and a lifetime of experience, thanks to thousands of hours of session work done for Allen Toussaint and Marhsall Sehorn.
On the band's third album, the Meters continued recording instrumentals, but vocals start to creep into the mix for the first time. Organ player Art Neville was chosen to sing (by virtue of the fact that he'd already sang some sides as a solo performer as far back as 1955). Among the selections he croons are a cover of "Wichita Lineman," Lee Dorsey's 1963 smash "Ride Your Pony," and a sweet reading of soul singer Ty Hunter's "Darling, Darling, Darling." The only original sung by Neville is the previously unreleased Otis Redding-inspired "Funky Meters' Soul." Needless to say, the remaining members (guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Ziggy Modeliste) keep everything cooking, whether Nevillew is belting vocals out or not. Among the highlights are the chugging novelty song "Chicken Strut" (complete with Modeliste's cackling), the booty-shaking call and response of "Same Old Thing," and the crackling "Tippi-Toes."
Reissue of 1970 album by this funky New Orleans-based r& b group led by Art Neville & produced by the mighty team of Allen Toussaint ...

| | Foetus Nail CD (1985) Remastered
Everything songs
$17.05 Jim Thirlwell released many records under such permutated names as You've Got Foetus On Your Breath. NAIL is his second SFOTW album, and it is as schizophrenic as--though more aggressive than-its predecessor, HOLE. Listening to the rapid-fire shifts in stylistic references is akin to watching a kid run around a toy store, picking up toys for no more than a second or two until another, even shinier one catches his eye.
NAIL offers nods towards soundtrack themes, swing jazz, industrial, and punk-to name only a few obvious Thirlwell influences. The tracks are heavily percussion oriented, layered with everything from synthesizers and samples to horn sections and jackhammers.
There are two Wagnerian soundtrack set pieces (the "Pigdom Come" theme and overture) and two other instrumentals- (the three- second "!" and "Private War," a short ambient piece that suggests the sound of a metal garbage can being dragged across a chalkboard. "Anything (Viva!)" incorporates that same sound as a percussive loop beneath other, more threatening sounds while the gravel-bed voice of Clint ...
