Critically acclaimed virtuoso of plucked instruments since age nine, John Schneiderman specializes in the performance practice and repertoire of eighteenth-century lutes and nineteenth-century guitars. Based in California, Mr. Schneiderman is in demand as a soloist and chamber musician collaborating on recordings and performances throughout North America.Beginning his performance career as a banjo, guitar, bass and fiddle player, the young Schneiderman was a familiar face on the stages of bluegrass and folk festivals throughout California. He continues his interest in early American music performing traditional Appalachian fiddle tunes in a clawhammer style on the five-string banjo.Mr. Schneiderman studied with British guitar pedagogue and author Frederick Noad, and continued his studies at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland, with the great modern pioneer of the baroque lute, Eugen Dombois. Mr. Dombois' precise and detailed approach to the repertoire continues notably to influence Schneiderman's interpretations today. He is a member of the chamber ensembles Galanterie and The Czar's Guitars, and has performed with the Los Angeles Opera, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra, Musica Angelica, Seattle Baroque, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Chanticleer, Musica Pacifica and the American Bach Soloists. His extensive discography, much of it rarely or never before recorded lute and guitar music, includes CDs on the Titanic, AudioQuest, Dorian, Centaur, VGo and Profil:Edition Guenter Haenssler labels. Mr. Schneiderman is currently on the faculties of the University of California at Irvine, Irvine Valley College and Orange Coast College, and has been on the faculties of the California State University at Long Beach and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. For further information:www.johnschneiderman.com Baroque Lute Duets Music | Label | VGO | | CD Universe Part number | 7315652 | | Catalog number | 106119 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Sep 26, 2006 | | Recording Time | 58 minutes |

Baroque Lute Duets
$9.01 The instrumental works of Darius Milhaud are more widely known than any of his vocal works, yet he wrote prolifically for the voice, adding nearly 300 songs to the genre. This CD offers six sets of songs composed by Milhaud during the first half of the 20th century. The songs are representative of Milhaud's artistic genius with regard to his skills of writing melody, counterpoint and his efficient use of harmonic language. His goal in composition was to be expressive and inventive and these pieces are representative of that as well, while remaining very accessible. The intent of the CD was to bring these songs to the attention of singers and pianists in order to encourage more performance of the vocal music of Darius Milhaud.Martha J. Hart - Mezzo-sopranoWarmth, richness and clarity of tone coupled with sincere, expressive communication of text distinguish the artistry of Martha J. Hart. Known for her stylistic interpretation of music spanning the Baroque to contemporary, Ms. Hart has sung to critical acclaim throughout North America and France. Highly regarded for her performances of oratorio, art song and chamber music, Martha has sung with the symphony orchestras of Montreal, Atlanta, Lansing, Phoenix, Grand Rapids, and St. Louis, the Omaha Chamber Symphony, Florida Orchestra, and the Mormon Temple Square Chorale and Orchestra and worked with distinguished conductors Helmuth Rilling, Craig Jessop, Simon Preston and the late Robert Shaw. Ms. Hart is soloist on recordings of the Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers and Schubert Songs for Male Chorus with the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers, both on the Telarc label and The Celestial Country music of Charles Ives with the St. Olaf Choir for Linn Records.(available at www.stolaf.edu)As a recitalist, Ms. Hart is known for her imaginative programs combining poetry reading and art song around a central theme. Baroque Lute Duets
$21.39 A CD presenting a solo instrument is, in principle, not unusual. In fact, when it comes to a solo CD by a pianist, it is most likely the rule rather than the exception. It is true that musical thoughts thoroughly sound and come to life in the harmony and concertising, or the combined voices, of various instruments; but amongst musicians, most likely even from prehistoric times, there has always wandered and dwelled the recluse, who more or less prefers to lay trust in himself, and feels most at home in a duet between his musical genius and the instrument he plays. With the present release by clarinettist Jože Kotar, however, it would be difficult to assign the performer to this category, given his activity in the past decade, on the concert stage as well as on CD, whether as a chamber musician in a wind quintet, as a member of a clarinet sextet, or a primary element of a wind trio with flute and bassoon, whether standing before a symphony orchestra as a classical soloist, recording a CD with a string quartet, or a more unusual CD in a duo with harp, whether we see him as the driving force of a clarinet choir, or standing before or performing in a wind ensemble, or whether we listen to him as the first clarinet of the Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra, or at concerts of chamber orchestras performing in conjunction with events organised by the Society of Slovene Composers, tackling mainly contemporary music by domestic and foreign composers, and, not least: on many occasions alone with his ebony instrument engaging in the most demanding of performance challenges set for this instrument - challenges in which one can perhaps find the reason for this new CD of exclusively authentic solo works written in the last four decades, some created specifically for Kotar. Our descendants through the centuries will probably shake their heads and only with difficulty believe that one single person – Jože Kotar – was able to undertake so many endeavours, especially in view of the fact that the activities enumerated are only those in the area of musical performance; in addition to these, he works as a musical pedagogue, beginning with his position as an associate professor at the Ljubljana Academy of Music, then moving on to his participation as a regular member of the international jury of various competitions, and so on, and so on... In view of this, it is essential that we can take as much as possible of this incredible breadth of artistry that marks and brings to life the magical sound moment captured on this recording, and calmly present it to the non-believer: look and listen, it is all true. But let us return to the point of ...
