(1 Customer Review)
Originally released on A&M records in 1981, Snaz is one of the better, and least recognized, live '70s (as a style, not necessarily a period in time) hard rock recordings. Unlike more recognized '70s metal artists like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, and others, Nazareth -- even in their Hair of the Dog heyday -- never were able to put much "heavy" into their heavy metal guitar attack when they recorded in the studio. There wasn't much of a thump coming from the drums and bass either, and the overall affect was a wimpy sound that didn't nearly serve the band's fine material as well as it should have. All of this left Nazareth's otherwise respectable '70s studio recordings with much to be desired sonically. Recorded live in Vancouver, Snaz is a production and engineering highlight in the band's career. The energy and recklessness of Nazareth's material is much more palpable on these live versions, and while things get a little sloppy at times, it's never distracting. Fans of Nazareth simply must add this record (most recently re-released by Castle in 1997) to their collection of essential band releases. ~ Vincent Jeffries

$17.65 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" ...
| | Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities CD (2001) (Import) United Kingdom
Snaz
$16.65 Kent might actually be underselling itself by titling this collection Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities. That leads listeners to expect yet another anthology of generic mid-tempo mid-'60s American soul singles that have somehow come to be worshiped as choice rarities in England's Northern soul scene. These couple of dozen tracks are from the '60s (and occasionally from the early '70s), they are rare, and they do go for absurdly high prices among Northern soul collectors. Actually, however, these form a more diverse CD than the usual Northern soul anthology, with a good number of decent, lushly produced ballads and harmonized soul-pop efforts along with the expected dancefloor filler. Some of the songs from the early half of the '60s have pleasing traces of doo wop and girl group sounds, too. Listeners are still not going to know who many of these people are unless they're one of those collectors, with some exceptions: there's a 1962 single by Joe Simon, a rarity by the Delfonics, and items by cult soul vocalists Clifford Curry and Bettye Swann. More surprisingly, there are a couple of blue-eyed soul ringers by Charlie Rich (whose ...
| | Breaking Pangaea Cannon To A Whisper CD (2001)
Snaz
$7.49 Although emo is a music terminology thrown around all too much by music critics and fans alike, it is hard to argue with the logic of such classifications. While many could argue that a variety of musical styles can invoke emotion in one sense or another in a person, the more passionate and soothing music experiences stand out as exceptionally proficient in revealing the ache of one's heart. In this regard, Breaking Pangaea happens to one of the most promising emo groups in some time, as their melodic direction and low-key impact leave the listener stunned. Cannon to a Whisper is a stellar collection of songs that motivate the listener to allow themselves to feel. Bordering on straight rock & roll, Breaking Pangaea has the raw aura that feels much more genuine then the majority of the emo genre, dictating lyrics with an intensity uncommon in others burdened by the classification. While there is little here that could be described as pure aggression, songs such as "Wedding Dress" and "The New Sound" strike with the forceful nature of hardcore yet leave a distinct impression of hope and perseverance in the listener's mind. This trio weaves dramatic dreamscapes through their music and plays with such honesty and depth that their music could just as easily bring one to tears as they could make one leap with joy. Cannon to a Whisper is an accurate title for this album, as Breaking Pangaea captures the listener with explosions of emotion that appear as subtle, mellow rock. This is truly an album that is as cathartic as it is compelling. ~ Jason D. Taylor

$9.89 Released in September 1982, DEVIL is Ozzy's third solo album and first live one. Recorded at NYC's Ritz, it closes a chapter in Ozzy's career with an all-Black Sabbath set, actually competing against his former bandmates as they released LIVE EVIL just a few months later. Ozzy's performance is as spirited as ever, and the Sabbath classics come across tight and rock solid.
