Souvenirs Souvenirs album
$11.09 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.
Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, and should appeal to fans of that disc. The opening track features the extraordinary, bell-like vocal timbre of 15-year-old Chloe Agnew over an orchestral backing that includes tin whistle. "Isle of Inisfree" showcases Orla Fallon, whose dark voice and supple harp playing make for a haunting listening experience. ...

There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ska material, the Wailer's debut (CATCH A FIRE), the definitive NATTY DREAD, and his later-period opus EXODUS, but LEGEND provides a highly satisfying, if brief, overview of Marley's genius. A record well suited to any location, season, or time of day, it has proven universal in its appeal. The music herein is as essential as air. (Note: ...

$6.09 The perfect holiday album if you plan on opening your presents under a palm tree. Masterfully performing these slide guitar interpretations are some of the genre's best-known artists such as Keola Beamer, Moses Kahumoku, and Led Kaapana. | | Shahram Nazeri Passion Of Rumi CD (2007)
Souvenirs Souvenirs album
$13.79 It's perhaps ironic that you don't need to be able to understand the words to appreciate this celebration of the 700th anniversary of the birth of the great Iranian poet Rumi. But these performances by father and son, along with the other four members of the ensemble, transcend language to reach pure emotion. It can be as affecting as singer Shahram Nazeri's vocals on "Fanayam Man 1," where a spare backing merely emphasizes the voice, or the remarkable instrumental "Journey to Eternity" featuring Hafez Nazeri's work on the stringed setar (Persian lute), a virtuoso piece of playing. He deserves praise, too, for his compositions here and arrangements, which carry further the idea of monophonic Iranian melodies and dress them in harmony, making for a full, glorious coat which is instantly accessible to Western ears. Using young musicians who are both deeply familiar with the tradition and willing to experiment, he creates something lush and beautiful, the perfect foil for his father's voice, which is a majestic, emotional instrument, and a true listening experience. This is far more than a celebration of a man and his works, it's an achievement of outstanding merit. ~ Chris Nickson
"Passion of Rumi" is a celebration of the poetry of Rumi with a new and fresh musical approach. This recording is the first work of Shahram Nazeri in collaboration ...

Souvenirs Souvenirs CD music
$15.05 BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
That Ry Cooder, you've got to keep an eye on him every minute, or he jumps into another cross-cultural collaboration. In the wake of his landmark recordings TALKING TIMBUKTU with Ali Farka Toure and A MEETING BY THE RIVER with V.M. Bhatt comes BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, essentially a supergroup of traditional Cuban musicians with the addition of international agitator Cooder. Somehow, Cooder always finds just the right space to slide his sinuous slide guitar into, so that it works in almost any context. Here, amidst the multi-layered percussion, piano and Cuban guitar rhythms, Cooder's slide simultaneously finds a home and eggs the ensemble on. The natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette is the real star of BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, evoking both a sense of mystery and a feeling of intense emotional satisfaction.

$6.09 Teddy Pendergrass delighted both R&B and music fans in general when he debuted on a new label with this album in 1984. It was his first album of fresh songs in two years, and Elektra put some muscle behind it. It also helped that he had a good duet with Whitney Houston, a song included ...
| | Old & In The Way That High Lonesome Sound CD (1996)
Souvenirs Souvenirs songs
$14.19 Recorded live at The Boarding House, San Francisco, California in October 1973. Includes liner notes by Richard Loren, Neil V. Rosenberg and Owsley Stanley.
Twenty-one years after the first album Old & In the Way came the second, an amazing development for a group that existed for only nine months and about 30 gigs in 1973. That High Lonesome Sound, like its predecessor, Old & In the Way, was drawn from the group's stand at the Boarding House in San Francisco in October 1973. And like that release, it combined traditional bluegrass material, in this case standards like "Orange Blossom Special" and "Uncle Pen," with interpolations from the world of rock & roll ("The Great Pretender") and new originals that touched on contemporary issues (Peter Rowan's "Lonesome L.A. Cowboy," a comment on the Southern California country-rock scene of the time). Old & In The Way was a great crossover album, largely because the bandmembers had enjoyed careers in rock, especially banjo player and singer Jerry Garcia, moonlighting from his day job in the Grateful Dead. What was less-well-known was that the group had real roots in the music, as Neil V. Rosenberg pointed out in the second album's liner notes. Four of the five members had experience in bluegrass, and two had been members of ...
