Personnel: The Notorious B.I.G. (rap vocals); Diana King, Total (vocals); Method Man (rap vocals); Sybil Pennix (spoken vocals); Chucky Thompson (various instruments). The album that reinvented East Coast rap for the gangsta age, Ready to Die made the Notorious B.I.G. a star, and vaulted Sean "Puffy" Combs' Bad Boy label into the spotlight as well. Today it's recognized as one of the greatest hardcore rap albums ever recorded, and that's mostly due to Biggie's skill as a storyteller. His raps are easy to understand, but his skills are hardly lacking -- he has a loose, easy flow and a talent for piling multiple rhymes on top of one another in quick succession. He's blessed with a flair for the dramatic, and slips in and out of different contradictory characters with ease. Yet, no matter how much he heightens things for effect, it's always easy to see elements of Biggie in his narrators and of his own experience in the details; everything is firmly rooted in reality, but plays like scenes from a movie. A sense of doom pervades his most involved stories: fierce bandits ("Gimme the Loot"), a hustler's beloved girlfriend ("Me & My Bitch"), and robbers out for Biggie's newfound riches ("Warning") all die in hails of gunfire. The album is also sprinkled with reflections on the soul-draining bleakness of the streets -- "Things Done Changed," "Ready to Die," and "Everyday Struggle" are powerfully affecting in their confusion and despair. Not everything is so dark, though; Combs' production collaborations result in some upbeat, commercial moments, and typically cop from recognizable hits: the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" on the graphic sex rap "One More Chance," Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" on the rags-to-riches chronicle "Juicy," and the Isley Brothers' "Between the Sheets" on the overweight-lover anthem "Big Poppa." Producer Easy Mo Bee's deliberate beats do get a little samey, but it hardly matters: this is Biggie's show, and by the time "Suicidal Thoughts" closes the album on a heartbreaking note, it's clear why he was so revered even prior to his death. ~ Steve Huey Once he stepped out onto the scene as the rapper on the remix of Mary J. Blige's hit single "Real Love," many hip-hop fanatics anxiously awaited the debut of The Notorious B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls. Their prayers were answered with READY TO DIE, fifteen tracks of uncut, hard-core, lyrically sophisticated rap all complemented by hypnotic beats supplied by the underground's most prominent producers. READY TO DIE resumes where his "Juicy" single left off, but separates itself from the array of hip-hop albums that don't live up to the initial hit. Blowin' up the charts using his knowledge of the streets and hard bangin' snares provided by producer Easy Mo Bee, the Bedford-Stuyvesant native Notorious B.I.G. is far from "Ready To Die." Not since the likes of Slick Rick has there been an artist so successful in the storytelling genre of rap music, creating a mental picture of life in the heads of his listeners. The up-tempo "Gimme The Loot" illustrates the hustlin' ways of a trigger-happy robbery expert stressed from the "Everyday Struggle" of life. The recurrence of the Isley Brothers tune "Between The Sheets" adds to the charm of "Big Poppa," where Biggie portrays his "player" image. No need to skip any songs, READY TO DIE is packed with hits all the way through. DVD Features: Track List 1. Juicy 2. Big Poppa 3. Warning 4. One More Chance 5. Outstanding all across the board The Notorious BIG is my favorite rapper of all time. Naturally, as a result of this, I'm inclibed to rate this album very highly. But despite my favoritism, I did not mindlessly give out a perfect score. Personal favorite or not, The Notorious BIG is an oustanding artist gifted with tremendous lyrical dexterity. His ability to continously rhyme without dependance on cheap lyrics (excessive use the swears and monotonous use of the same words), and shift from one topic to another without losing the beat, are self-evident indicators of blistering talent. Thanks to the topical diversity of this album, you can easily find tracks that nourish your current mood. If you're feeling good, "Juicy" just might be the song that makes your day. Conversely, if you're feeling angry or belicose, "Gimme the Loot" or "Ready to Die" might be just the songs to get you into a therapeutic screaming session, during your ride home from work.
The beats are, not suprisingly, very dynamic, matching topical diversity mentioned earlier. Beats range from slow and methodical, to haunting and ambiant, all the way to energetic and bombastic. My only qualm here, is the inexplicable decision to include static (I kid you not), actual STATIC as a part of the mix in some songs.
Other than that, this album is practically flawless, in my mind.
All said, if you enjoy rap, do yourself a favor and buy this album. The price is right, and the disc content is pure gold. Submitted by AMCortines (Alvin, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

THE LIVEST ONE FROM BEDFORD-STUYVESANT I, like alot of Biggie fans, came of age in the 90's.With that being said ,not only does this album define that period of my existence,it deserves the title it holds. From the intro to the morbid and almost shocking suicidal thoughts, you are captivated.Captivated by the brilliance that lies within the bars he transmitted into our brains forever. The wit of the original"One More Chance",and the sheer heartbreaking storytelling on"Me and My Bitch"."Big Poppa",is a plain and simple hit.He showed his peers how to do it hands down.He encompassed what it meant to be the all around artist as rapper.Ready to die serves as a how to do it manual and that is why it stands as an all-time favorite. This Album is A Classic The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Ready To Die" is one of the best classic albums that I have in my collection. It all starts with the "Intro" when you can hear Biggie being born, and the things he did, hear, and seen when he was growing up in Brooklyn. His best song on the whole album is "Suicide Thoughts" when he talks to Puff Daddy about killing himself and before the track is over, he has a gun and shoots himself. Even though he wasn't going to kill himself, you can tell how much he was fed up with a lot of stuff in his life. I heard "Me & My Bitch" I was in 10th Grade and I heard that beat and I listen to what he was talking about, that made me write a song about a girl that I fell in love with. "Juicy" and "Warning" was unbelieveable. You have to listen to his words and take a journey with Biggie and he will tell you in his own words about life, money, sex, selling drugs, and violence can change just by using a pad and pen. Biggie was blessed by God with a talent that he has. Submitted by one10boys4 (Manteo, NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
