In one of the finest examples of western melodramas, Theron is emotionally tortured by his parents' frigid marriage. Before he was born, his father had an affair with a local woman that resulted in an illegitimate son. Damaged by his mother's scorn and his father's callousness, Theron carries on his father's legacy by mistreating his own girlfriend. His impoverished half-brother Rafe grew up in the shadow of his spoiled brother. Unlike Theron, Rafe comes to terms with his brother, his absent father and the life that was denied him. Superb performances by all.

5 stars A MAGNIFICENT MASTERPIECE……..
The members of the Academy Awards must have fallen asleep before this great movie was released!!??!! It deserved an Oscar in every aspect and category!! What a great pity it was not recognized as one of the truly great films of the 20th. Century. It was nominated for 3 NBR awards and won 2 (Best film and best supporting actor – Peppard). Minelli won a best director from another academy! Come and see why a boy is kept as a mama's boy till the age of seventeen. Come and see why a boy from seemingly the highest family in the county is rejected by the father of his girl. See why a mother had finally to reveal to her son the shocking truth about his father, and their estranged sex life. See why an illegitimate brother had to cover up for his brother's illegitimate son. And finally see why a father, who deserves to be punished, ultimately is punished but for a sin he did not commit!! This is truly, as the ads cried out, when you talk of great films you will talk about this one!! It is a masterpiece, a gem, one of director Vincentte Minelli's greatest achievements!! Usually the book is always better than the movie, but in this case the film is much superior to the original novel by William Humphrey (the only book I have read 3 times). The screenplay by Irving Ravetch & Harriet Frank Jr. was much more dramatic, albeit sticking to the original work. For example the character of Rafe (the illegitimate son) was not in the book at all (it was just hinted that there were several ones in town) yet in the film he is one of the major characters. He is both tragic and admirable (beautifully played by George Peppard), and completely captures our sympathy. Captain Wade (superbly played by Robert Mitchum) was the other bigger than life character! Nobody could have delivered the speech to his naïve son like him :"If you want I will help you to be a man who walks with nothing in his pockets, no identification because everybody knows who you are, no money because everybody would be glad to lend you, no keys because you don't lock anything you own, and no watch because time waits on you"! George Hamilton's performance as "Theron" the legitimate son was his best ever, he was born for the role. The final scene is simply the most unforgettable one put in films. Finally Miss Hannah (Eleanor Parker was magnificent as the mother) gives Rafe the recognition as being one of the sons of the "Captain" and engraves it on his tombstone for everyone to see and tells him : "You think I am incapable of one human gesture in my life? What is there to hide? He had two fine sons, didn't he?" and Rafe replies : "Not until today he didn't,…………. Miss Hannah let's us go Home…….." I have seen this film tens of times and I always enjoy it more and more. They don't make them like this anymore. This is movie-making par-excellence, and rarely does so many talents combine to make such a success. Here you have rich, earthy, true-to-life , highly convincing characters, and although the age has changed since the old-fashioned manners of the 60's, and by nowadays standards illegitimate children and out-of-wedlock babies are not a shame anymore, still this film moves our sentiments deeply. If I were stranded on an island and had to choose 1 film, I would have chosen "Home From The Hill" to be stuck with for the rest of my life!!!!!

5 stars ABSOLUTELY TRUE TO LIFE
This movie has never left my consciousness because of the true realism that this story brings to life. For its time, this movie was very prophetic in nature as it was a preview of the times in which we Now live. The stubborness and pride of the parents in this movie & it's effect on the many lives that they touched, is a stark warning of how we can either bless or curse the lives of those connected to us!

Winding curves and smashing dead ends make SUMMER PLACE a truly ironic tale of unrequited love and teenage lust. When a business man, Ken Jorgenson (Richard Egan) takes his wife, Helen (Constance Ford) and his daughter Molly (Sandra Dee) to an island off the coast of Maine, little does he suspect that he will rekindle the teenage love affair he once had with the now married Sylvia (Dorothy McGuire). Now it seems that events are going to repeat themselves when her son (Troy Donahue) and his daughter ...
