While the Escalators were formed by two former members of U.K. psychobilly act the Meteors, their first and only album, Moving Staircases, shows they were capable of a lot more than the tacky horror show play-acting that was their former band's trademark. While there's a faint hint of rockabilly visible around the edges of the Escalators' music, for the most part Moving Staircases leans heavily towards garage punk, with a gloomy yet curiously inviting aural cloud hanging over the music. Bassist Nigel Lewis and drummer Mark Robertson give the music a firm and steady pulse, but they also let it fade back just enough to give these tunes the determined plod of the walking dead, while Bart Coles' guitar work blends twang with a dash of fuzz, and the finished product manages to sound ominous without turning into a cartoon. The lyrics also lean towards real-life horrors rather than monster movie shtick on songs like "Flanders Field" and "The Day the Sun Burned Down," while the excesses of mid-'80s British consumer culture are raked over the coals in "Sloane Rangers" and "Video Club." And though vocalist Woodie doesn't have a wealth of range, he certainly makes himself understood, and there's a direct, unpretentious tone to his work that gets the job done with no fuss and significant impact. The Escalators lasted less than a year, and judging from this album, that's a shame -- they rocked with genuine nocturnal force, and they avoided the sillier excesses of their peers to make an album that rocked with heart, soul and intelligence. Goth band Red Lorry Yellow Lorry may not be as well known as some of the bigger names in the genre, but TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER shows they were a talented bunch who are perhaps unfairly neglected.
This reissue of their 1985 album comes with 11 additional tracks.
The Lorries' first full album kicks off with the grinding title track -- steady, not punishing, but still aggressive beats, slashing guitar, Chris Reed's abrupt but not shouted vocals. In retrospect the band actually make a great case for being the slightly more romantic Big Black instead of just being the Sisters/Joy Division, Pt. 2 with this song, and keeping that in mind, Talk About the Weather has more going on for it than meets the eye. There's certainly more than a little ghost-of-Andrew Eldritch in the arrangements, not to mention Ennio Morricone (thus trumping the Fields of the Nephilim's own twist on that influence by a couple of years), but Reed's lyrics and singing definitely show the Ian Curtis touch more in their emotional roil as opposed to Hammer horror. As a result, compared to the Sex Gang Children or the like, the Lorries come across more straightforwardly, their music here sounding often brusque. As one of the initial artists to sign with Reprise Records -- as part of Frank Sinatra's handpicked stable of talent -- Sammy Davis, Jr. brought with him the expertise of nearly a dozen-year recording career on Capitol (1949-1956) and then Decca (1957-1960). Although often miscast as a rehash of earlier material, 1963's A Treasury of Golden Hits is actually an anthology of revisitations -- in stereo no less -- of sides from Davis' back catalog. Under the direction of longtime collaborator Mort Stevens, the vocalist takes on 11 classics from his previous platters as well as notable contributions to the stage. Two tunes -- the opening Robert C. Wright/George Forrest-penned "And This Is My Beloved" as well as the groovy samba overhaul of "Hey There" -- were originally Sy Oliver orchestrations. The latter -- which was gleaned from Pajama Game -- was one of Davis' biggest hits during his brief but influential Decca tenure. The scintillating powerhouse "In a Persian Market" is quite possibly the entry that benefits the most from its reinvention and newfound status.
