(2 Customer Reviews)
By the time 2006's U218 SINGLES was released, U2 had been one of rock's reigning behemoths for a good quarter century. Whittling down the group's hefty discography to 18 tracks seems impossible, but U218 SINGLES solves the problem by focusing, as the title suggests, on singles. Consequently, some crucial tunes, namely early ones like "I Will Follow," "Gloria," and "Two Hearts Beat As One," are missing.
But since one of U2's greatest strengths is their ability to create imaginative and engaging music that can also cross over into the mainstream, the collection brims with great material. Some of the band's best recorded moments--"Pride (In the Name of Love)," "New Year's Day," and "One," for example--are showcased, along with immediately familiar anthems like "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Mysterious Ways," and "Sweetest Thing." A handful of tunes from the 2000s--like "The Saints Are Coming," the band's famed collaboration with Green Day--round out the set. Most of these songs have already become a permanent part of the pop-culture fabric, but that doesn't lessen the appeal of hearing them on this smartly compiled set.
Includes a bonus track.

U218 Singles CD music
$11.99 OUT OF SIGHT is an 18-track hits collection of the godfather of soul's recordings between 1958 and 1975, highlighted by "Its a Man's Man's Man's World," "The Payback," and "Papas Got a Brand New Bag."
If you don't have access to the dozens of James Brown compilations in the United States or Japan, this Universal U.K. collection may be just the thing to get you up offa that thang. Given that they own virtually all of the James Brown masters, we can be assured that these versions of his best-known material are first recordings as opposed to the many dodgy live boots out there from fly-by-night labels attempting to cash in as well as deceive fans. This one is strictly legit. There are 18 cuts on this monster; rather than concentrating on being representative of Brown's long career, this disc touches on his soul years but goes deeper into representing the development of the funk we all love him for. "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine" and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" precede "Try Me," "Please Please Please," and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." Other material here includes the killer versions of "Body Heat" and "The Payback," with plenty in between. Unfortunately, "Mother Popcorn" is missing, but that's OK because "Hot Pants," "Night Train," and both parts of "Funky Drummer" are here. In other words, this is a great place to get started for the novice, and a killer mix CD for the devoted fan. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Fleetwood Mac CD (1975) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
U218 Singles songs
$12.19 With this album, years of personnel changes ended for Fleetwood Mac with the departure of guitarist Bob Welch. The remaining core of the group (Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie) invited guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks to join, and thus began the most commercially successful period for Fleetwood Mac. With 3 strong songwriters in Nicks, Buckingham and Christine McVie, FLEETWOOD MAC was their first number-1 album.
PETER GREEN'S FLEETWOOD MAC, the band's full-length debut, is miles removed from commercially tailored soft rock of Fleetwood Mac's 1970s incarnation. The '60s version of the band, led by guitarist/singer Peter Green, was edgy, psychedelic, and rooted deeply in the blues. Green's love of revved-up 12-bar jams, raw boogie grooves, and shredding electric leads come together beautifully on this album, with the help of slide guitarist/singer/pianist Jeremy Spencer, drummer Mick Fleetwood, and bassist John McVie.
With the exception of Spencer, the members had played together in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, and took the slashing, mercurial sound and lock-step interplay from that outfit and--arguably--improved on it. Though the album is steeped in traditional blues and includes covers of tunes by Robert Johnson ("Hellhound on My Trail"), Howlin' Wolf ("No Place to Go"), and Elmore James ("Got to Move"), the compositions penned by Green and Spencer stand up, especially ...

| | Timothy B Schmit Playin' It Cool CD (1984)
U218 Singles CD music
$9.69 After noted tenures in supergroup the Eagles and equally super (but not as supergroup-ish) Poco, Schmit took a cue from his former bandmantes Don Henley and Glenn Frey and took a stab at a solo career with Playin' It Cool. Not as gifted a songwriter as Henley or Frey, Schmit holds his own in the vocal department and the musicianship is on par with either of his colleauges. But what makes Playin' It Cool sound subpar is the erratic nature of the tracks. The production on several of these tunes sound antiquated in comparison to the super glossed production of the mid eighties; almost reminiscent of Schmit's tunes in the Eagles. It certainly doesn't help matters that many of his Southern California compadres (Henley, Carl Wilson, Joe Walsh and JD Souther) make guest appearances, leading to the notion that Playin' It Cool is an album that was several years in the making. It's not the worst of Eagles solo records, but it is certainly nowhere near the best either. Thankfully, Schmit would re-tool his sound and deliver more promising material with later records. ~ Rob Theakston
