Australian band You Am I have been delivering the raggedy pop-punk goods since the early 1990s, and have it down to a science. The desperate but funny "Thank God I've Hit Bottom" opens this 2007 release, and serves as a calling card for the band's general attitude and humor. The 11 songs that follow explode with super-charged riffing and goofy ranting, with the occasional detours into sheer Stones-y brilliance ("Secrets") and Kinks-ian gentility ("Explaining Cricket").Rolling Stone (p.70) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Gunslingers' sounds like some lost pop-rock gem from 1973." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.49) - "'Friends Like You' in particular captures the group's fusion of power-pop tuneage and giddy rock thunder..." Convicts album
$9.89 At only 18 years of age, British MC Dizzee Rascal made a strikingly audacious debut with BOY IN DA CORNER. Born of the UK garage/2-step scene, but inspired by the dark lyrical content of American hip-hop (Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep), Dizzee combines these influences to form his own distinctive style. The result is a collection of tracks that are almost physical in their assault ...

| | Dungen Tio Bitar CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Convicts album
$9.99 TIO BITAR is bookended by two drastically differing pieces that illustrate the dynamic range Ejstes can muster; the album opens with the appropriately titled "Intro," which immediately plunges the listener into the frenzy of a psychedelic inferno, while closing track "En Gang I Ar Kom Det En Tar" showcases the pretty, balladic side of Dungen via gently plucked acoustic guitar, elegant piano and organ lines, and cooing woodwind sounds. Whether channeling mellow, ...
| | Dinosaur Jr Beyond CD (2007) Digipak
Convicts CD music
$10.09 As one of the seminal college-rock bands of the late '80s/early '90s, Dinosaur Jr. definitively bridged the gap between the musical mindsets of '80s "alternative" and '90s "indie." Along the way, they influenced scads of young slackers wielding fuzzy guitars and moldy Neil Young albums. The recordings around which the band's legend largely revolves (GREEN MIND, YOU'RE LIVING ALL OVER ME, BUG) epitomized the slacker-rock aesthetic through J. Mascis's laid-back drawl and the band's Crazy Horse-meets-Replacements ...
| | Furry Things Big Saturday Illusion CD (1996)
Convicts music CDs
$12.95 After some fine single and compilation cuts, including the ridiculously great "Still California," which appears here, Furry Things achieved both a full band lineup and a fantastic overall debut with Big Saturday Illusion. Like many American indie groups of the '90s, the quartet's debt to fuzz pedal abusers such as My Bloody Valentine and the Flaming Lips was plenty clear throughout the album. Happily the group avoided sounding like just another knockoff, with a good balance of garage-level crash and bash and fried psychedelic feedback topped off with sometimes wispy, sometimes softly drawling vocals. Big Saturday hints at big ambitions without sounding full of itself, even on the biggest track of all, the heavy Krautrock megajam "Nothing From Zero." Opening cut "Introism" is also notable, oddly enough, for its ending: soft piano parts regularly interrupted by the dying remnants of feedback from the main song. Elsewhere there's ...

| | Adams, Ryan & The Cardinals Jacksonville City Nights CD (2005)
Convicts music CDs
$12.49 Ryan Adams's sophomore album with his Cardinals backing band, and his second studio offering of 2005, JACKSONVILLE CITY NIGHTS finds the ever-prolific singer/songwriter in his twangy, Gram Parsons-inspired persona. In fact, on "Dear John," jazz/pop superstar Norah Jones plays Emmylou Harris to Adams's Parsons, as the two settle into a slow, smoky duet.
While JACKSONVILLE has an energetic moment or two ("The Hardest Part"), it never wanders anywhere near Adams's amped-up ROCK N ROLL territory. In general, this is melancholy, down-tempo alt-country, which, given Adams's past in Whiskeytown, explains why the performer sounds so at ease here. "A Kiss Before I Go" begins the album on a wistful note, setting the tone with barroom piano lines and weepy pedal-steel work. On "Hardest Way to Fall," Adams indulges in a sauntering Dylan-like vibe, while "September" proves to be almost haunting in ...
