Legends Of The Grand Ole Opry music CDs
$12.55 Although for the rest of his life, underinformed fans of 1990s pop will forever be calling Darius Rucker "Hootie," the former Hootie & the Blowfish singer-songwriter makes his solo debut with a perfectly credible take on mainstream contemporary Nashville country. The laid-back, largely acoustic folk-pop of Hootie & the Blowfish was never that far removed from contemporary country in the first place, so only the fact that Rucker is the first major African-American country star since the heyday of Charley Pride makes the stylistic crossover out of the ordinary. First single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It," a Top 5 hit on the Billboard country charts even prior to the album's release, makes clear how comfortable Rucker is with the blend of ...

Legends Of The Grand Ole Opry album
$14.75 If there's a candidate for the Eagles of the 21st century, it's surely Rascal Flatts, with their seamless blend of country, rock, and pop, and their discography of multi-platinum albums hitting the top of both the country and pop charts. Their sixth album, UNSTOPPABLE, makes the aforementioned blend so smooth that only the most stubborn pigeonholer would still label them a country act. If not for the recurring pedal-steel swells and the occasional vocal twang, there'd be nothing keeping UNSTOPPABLE from being a straight-up mainstream pop album. The preponderance of big, bold power ballads should ...

Legends Of The Grand Ole Opry CD music
$12.65 This is the debut album of a young man who began pursuing a career in country music while still in his teens, sending his songs to Nashville in the hopes of having other artists record his material. BRIAN MCCOMAS, that young man's sonic calling card, finds a shortcut around that process, quite rightly asserting that a songwriter is his own best interpreter. McComas also sings tunes by a variety of Nashville pros here, but it all sounds very much of a piece. Willie Nelson gets name-checked in the inviting "Come With Me," and McComas claims new traditionalists like George Strait and Randy Travis as influences, but he mixes an honest-sounding twang with a sound aimed squarely at the mainstream, contemporary ...

| | Wood Brothers Ways Not To Lose CD (2006)
Legends Of The Grand Ole Opry songs
$11.69 The Wood Brothers' debut album is a tense and hushed affair full of weighted lyrics peppered with words like truth, faith, spirit, and soul and more angels than you can shake a stick at, and each song seems tipped right at the edge of indecision and confusion. These are largely Oliver Wood's songs, with his brother Chris Wood (of Medeski, Martin & Wood) adding bass and backing vocals and Kenny Wollesen bringing light drums and percussion to five tracks. Oliver seems frozen in a kind of perpetual spiritual dilemma on these tracks, but what keeps the best of these songs from being exercises in self-centered ennui is the dogged hope that shines through between the cracks. The opener, "One More Day," is a perfect example, as it charts the waters of bleak desolation but then slides into the chorus, which goes "Just when your faith is gone/Give it one more day." The music itself is sparse and languid, a sort of folk-blues mix that isn't in too much ...
