| | Paul McCartney Good Evening New York City CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
Classical Guitar
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

| | John Fogerty Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
Classical Guitar
$14.29 John Fogerty released his first solo CD, an album of covers on which he played all the instruments, under the name the "Blue Ridge Rangers," and he revives that concept on 2009's THE BLUE RIDGE RANGERS RIDES AGAIN. Where the first smacked of the righteous zeal of a young purist, RIDES AGAIN is a lot looser in its attack, which is reflected in the way it splits the difference between country and rockabilly classics and reflective numbers from '70s songwriters. These unexpected covers of John Prine, Delaney & Bonnie, and John Denver offer a peek at a sweeter, gentler Fogerty, a Fogerty who can also be heard on how he lays back instead of pushing ahead on Buck Owens' "I Don't Care (Just as Long as You Love Me)" and Ray Price's "I'll Be There," and even on his revamp of his own neglected swamp rocker "Change in the Weather." He can still raise an unholy ruckus however, wailing his way through Gene Simmons' rockabilly classic "Haunted House" and joyously duetting with Bruce Springsteen on the ...
| | Buried Alive Last Rites CD (2001)
Classical Guitar
$11.39 Last Rites is rather typical coming from a metal-core band such as Buried Alive. Much of the lyrical content uses the structure of first person versus second person in what is rather typical for the hardcore music format. Unfortunately, the musical content may not come off much better. However, it seems that much progression has been made for Buried Alive since their last album, Death of Your Perfect World. Still showcasing traditionally throaty, screamed vocals and a metal guitar sound, the band borders on some semi-creative guitar parts, which is especially pleasing in a genre noted for its redundancy. The organization and structure of the music contains more dance parts and groove than before, whereas previously the plan of attack was a blistering, if not overwhelming, metal sound. Unfortunately, a common criticism from adults that "It all sounds the same" is duly noted and agreed. Much of Buried Alive's material has a long way to go before being accepted by the average listener and should be considered for fans of the band or genre only. Last Rites climaxes with an area Buried Alive is known for most: the live sound. Five tracks, recorded at the 2000 CMJ Fest, help give the listener a better idea of the energy and power of this band during a live set. However, considering that all the songs had either been on Death of ...

| | Dave Kusworth In Some Life Let Gone: Anthology: 1977-2007 CDs (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Classical Guitar
$22.05 First European release by one of Britain's most underated balladeer features tracks culled from his years with the Jacobites (with Nikki Sudden), Bounty Hunters, Tenderhooks, and Dave Kusworth Group, and 3 tracks recorded exclusively for this release.
Along with his on and off again collaborator the late Nikki Sudden, songwriter Dave Kusworth is one of the great rock & roll troubadours who showed up too late in the music's history to claim his true mantle of glory. As one can see from the cover, Kusworth looking like a cross between Keith Richards circa Exile on Main St and Johnny Thunders. But looking the part is only half the story. As the Jacobites, Kusworth and Sudden wrote some of the most memorable, truly classic -- if wonderfully ragged -- love songs (and other ones too) in late 20th century rock & roll, and precious few ever heard them. While Sudden may no longer be with us, Kusworth soldiers on, and this compilation provides the evidence for his own particular brand of...well...genius: simple, pure, poetic, and always basic. The 31 tracks on these two discs track Kusworth from his time(s) with Sudden through his other groups, most notably the Bounty Hunters, the Tenderhooks, and his Dave Kusworth Group. Some of these bands overlapped, and while their essence was always the same, there were subtle differences in their execution and output. The three Jacobites tracks -- there are two LP cuts -- "Heart of Hearts" and "Shame for the Angels," and a rare 12" single ...
