Sun Is Shining album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers' "Miss the Mississippi and You," is full of comfortable grace and sentiment, and Cash keeps that fine emotional tone throughout this set. Songs like the folk classic ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Sun Is Shining CD music
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up ...

| | Barbra Streisand Love Is The Answer CD (2009) Bonus Track
Sun Is Shining songs
$12.95 Even before their first session together, Barbra Streisand and collaborator Diana Krall designed LOVE IS THE ANSWER as a deeply emotional record: "each song an exploration concerning matters of the heart." And with the arrangements of maestro Johnny Mandel simply drawing occasional shading around Streisand's expressive voice--often leaving that voice as the only instrument--the album goes well beyond the usual saloon-song tropes to become a heart-wrenching experience on virtually every track. Additionally, although much was made of the two divas' collaboration, Krall's piano stays in the background, and Streisand's is the only voice heard here. Nearly every song is a classic of tender balladry, despite the fact that none had been put on album by Streisand before during her long career. Those facts alone should leave Streisand fans in ecstasy, as ...

| | Trophy Husbands Walk With Evil CD (2003)
Sun Is Shining music CDs
$11.59 If the listener thinks Walk With Evil sounds like a dark, brooding metal album, then he or she is at least half right. The Trophy Husbands, it seems, have a musical split personality, veering between dark rock and depressed alternative country. The venomous "There Ya Go" and "Piss on Your Grave" lead one to imagine new superlatives for misanthropic. Perhaps it's better that the lyrics to these songs aren't included. On the other side of sorrow are the country-flavored "Sad Girl" and "Burnin' the Candle," songs just as downbeat, but in a fun tongue-in-cheek manner. A quick look at the song credits provides a partial clue to this split: the first are sung by Kevin Daly, the latter by Dave Insley. This makes sense -- at least until one learns that Daly has written "Sad Girl," and that he sings the lead on a foot-stomping version of Ernest Tubb's "Educated Mama." While this is a bit confusing, the bottom line is that the country-flavored material works much better than the rock. "Hypnotized" and "Grace" may be dour, but they're dour in a fun, postmodern way; the title track, on the other musical hand, is severe without any respite. Unfortunately for the Trophy Husbands, the two styles don't really ...
| | Wackie's Rhythm Force African Roots, Act 3 CD (1983) Reissue
Sun Is Shining songs
$13.35 AFRICAN ROOTS ACT 3 is the dub version of Sugar Minott's WICKED AGO FEEL IT.
Though it wasn't billed as such, African Roots, Act 3 was essentially the dub version of Sugar Minott's excellent Wicked Ago Feel It, which was released at about the same time. Like the other dub programs produced by Lloyd "Bullwackies" Barnes, this one demonstrates that Barnes was capable of making good use of classic Studio One rhythms (such as, in this case, "I Hold the Handle" and "Love Me Always," both originally by the Heptones) and creating very fine new material as well. On this session he is helped out by the legendary organist ...

$26.29 | | Drew Mowell Seattle CD (2006)
Sun Is Shining album
$10.15 Drew Mowell’s future in music developed early in life. Born in April of 1982 in New York, he sang his way through childhood. Then, at age fifteen, Mowell bought a drum-set and was quickly immersed in and fascinated by the world of percussion. By his sophomore year of high school, Mowell was living in Indiana and had put together a five-piece band. It was at this point when Mowell, the band’s drummer and lead singer, developed his skills as a songwriter. Quickly, the band's success and musical growth became a personal passion. In time, this passion matured and Mowell itched to create and perform on his own. By 2000, the band had split, and he had purchased his first acoustic guitar. With this, Mowell submerged himself in the creation of his own music and his own style. Constantly practicing, writing lyrics, and drawing inspiration from artists such as Counting Crows, Dave Matthew's Band, ...
